Job Summary

Central Processing Supervisor, Day
7:00am to 3:30pm
Must be ASCP Certified
The Core Laboratory Central Processing Evening Shift Supervisor reports to the Technical Director of Pre/Post Analytics in the Core Laboratory. Central Processing consists of all laboratory functions prior to and after the testing process, including managing workflow and pre/post-analytical automation, specimen processing, specimen accessioning, reference lab interfaces and reporting, and customer service. Functionally responsible for coordinating the daily operation of the front office of the core laboratory. Oversees all Pre and Post analytic activity on the evening shift, in close conjunction with the day shift MT Operations Coordinator, reference lab staff, and other individuals who oversee areas that have an overlapping operating relationship with Central Processing.
Ensures that all activities, processes, and policies are carried out in strict compliance with governmental regulations, licensing agency standards, and hospital policies and procedures. Will be responsible for day-to-day general management including staffing, schedules, payroll, performance management, training, education, development of policy and protocol, compliance, and safety.
Responsibilities:
Operations
Creates and monitors systems/processes to ensure pre-analytic specimen integrity.
Monitors workflow and productivity metrics to meet statistical goals. Responds to operational metrics that are out of acceptable limits with a focus on improvement and efficiency.
Utilizes Qgenda scheduling software to ensure appropriate staffing to support and accomplish departmental goals and objectives in accordance with scheduling and timekeeping policies.
Provides for proper orientation, training, and in-service education of staff; assigns work and provides for cross-training as appropriate; monitors and supervises work to ensure compliance with established procedures, policies, and standards; monitors quality and quantity of work performed in the laboratories.
Responds to and investigates safety reports, including follow-up. Tracks issues and creates systems to address/correct them.
Manages workflow and workload to meet lab and department service goals.
Responds to specific customer service issues.
Periodically reviews and revises procedures in order to improve quality and productivity, and to comply with current regulatory standards. Recommends new processes and procedures to leadership.
Manages staffing model and complement within budget (including overtime) to meet laboratory and department goals.
Human Resources
Coordinates the orientation of new employees and participates in training for new systems and technology.
Ensures compliance with hospital and department requirements and competency with job requirements. Facilitates ongoing development of staff, assuring staff participation and competency.
Develops staffing patterns and schedules staff to meet work demands of a 24-hour/7 days per week operation, including coverage of sick calls, vacations, and extended leaves, and deploys staff as necessary within budgeted FTEs.
Utilizes PeopleSoft functions to authorize and process status changes, evaluates and performs overall employee performance appraisals; performs all other functions constituting proper management of staff in accordance with established hospital and departmental policy and procedures. Assures that all administrative procedures are followed.
Participates in interviewing and hiring staff for Central Processing. Delivers appropriate corrective action for assigned personnel, in collaboration with the Technical Director and Human Resources.
Ensures that MGH Pay practices are followed and prepares weekly payroll and ensures it is entered correctly in the Kronos system.
Regulatory/Compliance/Safety
Assists with overseeing regulatory compliance for Central Processing: participates in department preparation, identifies and remediates issues, participates in surveys, and addresses all findings as needed.
Identifies and leads process improvement and quality improvement initiatives.
Monitors workload, analyzes workflow, errors, and processing turnaround time to ensure specimen quality. Collaborates with Technical Director to define metrics and thresholds. Participates in ongoing quality assurance efforts.
Establishes and enforces safety regulations for the laboratory to ensure that laboratory personnel receive maximum protection from hazardous laboratory materials and infectious agents. May function as a Safety Officer.
Follows all safety (including infection control and hazardous material) policies and procedures. Notifies appropriate hospital departments of unsafe conditions. Successfully participates in safety education and competency activities.
Leadership
Builds and maintains ongoing working relationships with lab staff, clinical and physician staff to facilitate positive staff morale and optimal productivity and efficiency.
Supports, promotes, and demonstrates MGH customer service philosophy.
Promotes and initiates active communication with leadership, staff, and other departments.
Maintains close cooperation and liaison with other departments and administrative sections of the department and hospital to provide coordination of activities, which affect patient care.
Participates in strategic process and systems improvement initiatives that support departmental goals targeting patient satisfaction, employee satisfaction, quality and safety, expense and revenue management, and regulatory compliance.
Attends department-wide meetings; serves on committees; conducts meetings to maintain communications with subordinates relative to policy, practices, and procedures.
Conducts special projects under the direction of the Technical Director.


Qualifications

Qualifications: - MT (ASCP) - Bachelors Degree in Medical Technology or physical sciences - Significant or specialized related experience (greater than 5 years) - Minimum of one year of supervisory experience with a demonstration of leading non-exempt hourly staff preferred with documented customer service experience.
