JOB SUMMARY

Under general supervision, the Driver - Transit Vehicle Operator operates transit vehicles to deliver fixed-route, paratransit, on-demand, commuter, and special transportation services. This position is responsible for the safe, efficient, and professional transportation of passengers while ensuring compliance with all applicable federal, state, local, and agency regulations, policies, and procedures. The Transit Vehicle Operator serves as a frontline representative of the City and is expected to maintain the highest standards of customer service, professionalism, safety, and reliability.

Work Schedule and Availability:

  • Must be available to work a flexible schedule based on operational needs.
  • May be required to work mornings, evenings, nights, weekends, holidays, split shifts, and extended hours.
  • Must be willing and able to work special events, emergency operations, disaster response activities, and community functions as assigned.

QUALIFICATIONS

Education and Experience:

High school diploma, GED or equivalent. Must be 18 years or older.

Special Requirements:

  • Possession of a valid class "C" Texas Commercial Driver's License or higher with Passenger Endorsement (A standard Texas Class "C" Driver's License does not meet this requirement).
  • Upon offer of employment, must successfully pass the CDL physical exam and must maintain physical condition, as monitored by periodic CDL re-examinations, which allows completion of all assigned duties.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:

The Transit Vehicle Operator is expected to demonstrate a high level of professionalism, operational competence, and commitment to safe, reliable public transportation services. Employees in this position are required to perform physically demanding work, maintain strict compliance with agency policies, and adapt to changing operational needs.

  • Possess a clean driving record and maintain a comprehensive working knowledge of all applicable traffic laws, safety regulations, and transportation requirements governing the movement of passengers. No moving violations within the preceding three (3) years.
  • Demonstrate strong interpersonal, customer service, conflict-resolution, and communication skills while interacting with passengers, coworkers, community stakeholders, and agency representatives.
  • Complete all required Transit Operator training programs, including fixed-route operations, demand-response/paratransit operations, safety procedures, defensive driving techniques, emergency response protocols, and agency policies.

PHYSICAL DEMANDS

This position requires substantial physical effort and the ability to perform continuous manual and operational tasks throughout the workday. Employees must be capable of performing labor-intensive activities in support of passenger transportation services and agency operations.

  • Assist passengers with boarding, exiting, and securing mobility devices while maintaining safety and operational efficiency.
  • Repeatedly bend, stoop, kneel, crouch, twist, reach, climb, grasp, and perform repetitive motions throughout the course of a shift.
  • Perform vehicle inspections, safety checks, cleaning activities, fueling procedures, and other operational support functions that require physical exertion.
  • Must be capable of safely entering, exiting, and operating transit vehicles throughout the workday.
  • Must be able to stand, walk, bend, stoop, kneel, crouch, twist, reach, and climb as required to perform assigned duties.
  • Must be able to lift, carry, push, and pull equipment and materials weighing up to 30 pounds regularly and greater weights with assistance when necessary.
  • Must be able to work outdoors and be exposed to varying weather conditions, traffic environments, noise levels, and other environmental conditions associated with transit operations.
