Job Summary The Special Duty Training Helper Employee will offer subject matter expertise, technical assistance, and the ability to accurately perform and explain work processes withing their operational area to Operations Training Instructors and personnel as part of a teaching team during the implementation of various special projects which require the adoption of new procedures, documentation, training programs, and/or technology throughout a broad segment of Operations and occasionally outside of Operations and within a compressed time frame. This Special Duty Training Helper role is a temporary assignment and does not change the employee's core classification or home area/rating station.
Note: Selected candidates will receive additional training to prepare them for success in the Special Duty Training Helper assignment. Employees selected for this assignment will receive a non-pensionable stipend of $3.00 per hour, paid in addition to their current core classification hourly rate. Eligibility for this assignment is limited to specific classifications within each department

Duties & Responsibilities Pair with an Operations Instructor and attend classes in both a classroom and practical (field) setting to support employees during the implementation of new procedures and technology.
Assist and support an instructor as needed, which includes facilitating portions of training sessions within relevant areas of expertise; completing administrative tasks; answering trainee questions; and providing subject matter expertise. May lead small group by acting as a scribe and guiding discussions to meet in-class timelines. Be present in the field and provide technical assistance and help personnel navigate and troubleshoot devices and software.
Serve as direct contact for frontline employees, to assist where needed, address learning gaps and to promote the adoption of these initiatives. Perform other duties as assigned. Minimum Requirements & Qualifications A High School Diploma or equivalent.
Must be an employee of the MBTA for at least one (1) year. Must currently be an employee represented by the Alliance or Carmen's Local 589 in one of the following departments and have subject matter expertise in its core function: Maintenance of Way (Track), Signals, Power System Maintenance (PSM), Office of Chief Infrastructure (OCI), Heavy Rail Transportation, Light Rail Transportation or Stations/Transit Facilities Maintenance. Priority and preference will be given to those employees represented by the Alliance.
Facilitate portions of classroom instruction under the direction of an instructor. Demonstrated commitment to coaching, mentoring, or assisting coworkers in learning operational procedures. Must be comfortable speaking publicly to small and large groups.
Ability to work any and all shifts and/or locations as assigned or directed. Be available to work twenty-four (24) hours per day, seven (7) days per week. Ability to work effectively with a diverse workforce.

Experience in presentation, facilitation, or instruction.
Assignment Terms & Conditions Will be called upon when training is being offered to the Special Duty Training Helper Employee's role department. Length of assignments may vary and will be a minimum of one week and may last several weeks or months. Assignments may also include breaks which will require employees to work in their core role.
Will not be eligible for overtime in their core classification while working in the Special Duty Training Helper Role. Being selected does not guarantee work. Priority and preference will be given to those employees represented by the Alliance.
Will be eligible for overtime in the Special Duty Training Helper Role while working as a Special Duty Employee. Schedule may vary and Special Duty Training Helper Employees may be required to workdays, nights and/or overnights as training demands dictate. Accepting this role will not alter or change an employee's current seniority or rating status in their core role.

This is a temporary pilot position subject to the agreement's expiration date Job Conditions: Ability to effectively read, comprehend, communicate, and respond to instructions, orders, signs, notices, inquiries, etc. in English. Be at least eighteen (18) years of age, except if participating in an approved high school internship / co-op program.
Ability to commute to assigned work locations in the Boston, MA metro area, as required by the role. Ability to provide internal and external customers with courteous and professional experiences. Ability to work effectively, independently, and as part of a diverse workforce team (or supervise, if required).

Ability to pass a Criminal Offender Record Information (CORI) check, comprehensive background screening, and / or medical Clinic screening, potentially including physical examination and drug and alcohol screenings. Ability to work all shifts and / or locations assigned, directed, or necessary for this position, including (for some transit / operations roles) up to twenty-four (24) hours per day, seven (7) days per week as necessary to accommodate severe weather conditions, emergencies, or any other circumstances that may potentially impact service or the safety of service. Intern / co-op staff must be enrolled full or part-time in an accredited educational program and maintain a cumulative GPA of at least 2.5 for the entire duration of the internship / co-op
Additionally, interns / co-ops must have valid work authorization and U.S. Social Security Number prior to starting pre-employment screenings / pre-boarding, working in their positions, and throughout the duration of their program.
