What are spay and neuter procedures?

Spay and neuter are surgical procedures performed on pets to prevent them from reproducing. Spaying refers to the removal of the ovaries and usually the uterus in female animals, while neutering refers to the removal of the testicles in male animals. These procedures are typically done by veterinarians and help control pet overpopulation, reduce the risk of certain diseases, and can lead to better behavior in pets. Spaying and neutering are widely recommended for dogs and cats not intended for breeding.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a spay and neuter veterinarian, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Spay and Neuter Veterinarian, you need a Doctor of Veterinary Medicine (DVM or VMD) degree, veterinary licensure, and expertise in surgical procedures, particularly high-volume spay/neuter techniques. Familiarity with anesthesia protocols, surgical instruments, and practice management software is typically required. Attention to detail, manual dexterity, compassion, and effective communication are standout soft skills for this role. These competencies ensure the safety, efficiency, and well-being of animals, contributing to successful population control and animal welfare.

What are some common challenges veterinary technicians face while assisting in spay and neuter procedures?

Veterinary technicians assisting in spay and neuter clinics often encounter challenges such as managing high patient volumes, maintaining strict surgical sterility, and monitoring anesthesia in a fast-paced environment. Effective communication with veterinarians and support staff is essential to ensure each animal receives proper care before, during, and after surgery. Additionally, technicians must be adept at providing post-operative instructions to pet owners and responding calmly to unexpected complications, making adaptability and attention to detail crucial skills in this role.

What is the difference between Spay And Neuter vs Veterinary Technician?

Job description

Spay & Neuter Clinic Veterinarian (Full or part-time!)

Dakin Humane Society is a community-supported animal welfare organization that provides shelter, medical care, spay/neuter services, and behavioral rehabilitation for more than 20,000 animals and people each year. Since its inception in 1969, Dakin has become one of the most recognized nonprofit organizations in the Pioneer Valley and a national leader in animal welfare.

The Community Spay & Neuter Clinic at Dakin Humane Society is the largest of its kind in New England, providing high-quality, accessible spay and neuter surgery for dogs and cats throughout Springfield and the surrounding communities.

Since opening in 2009, we’ve performed more than 144,000 spay and neuter surgeries, helping reduce pet overpopulation, prevent unwanted litters, and keep more animals where they belong—with the people who love them. Our clinic is at the heart of Dakin’s mission to provide vital resources to people while improving the lives of animals throughout our community.

As more pets and families turn to Dakin for affordable care, we’re looking to grow our surgical team with a dedicated Spay & Neuter Veterinarian who shares our commitment to exceptional medicine and community impact.

In this role, you’ll spend your day in surgery, performing up to 30–40 high-quality spay and neuter procedures for community-owned cats and dogs, feral cats, and shelter animals as needed. You’ll work with an outstanding support staff and help make veterinary care more accessible to the families who need it most.

We’re hoping to find a full-time, 40 hour/week veterinarian, but we know great people don’t always fit into a traditional schedule. If you’re looking for part-time work, we’d still love to hear from you.

To put your surgical skills to work where they’ll have an immediate and lasting impact, we invite you to apply.

What You’ll Bring:
  • Doctor of Veterinary Medicine (DVM or equivalent) from an AVMA-accredited veterinary school.
  • Current Massachusetts veterinary license (or the ability to obtain one within three months), including Massachusetts Controlled Substance Registration.
  • Experience performing canine and feline spay and neuter surgeries is preferred; high-volume, pediatric surgery, and shelter medicine experience are a plus.
  • A commitment to providing exceptional surgical and medical care while treating every client with compassion and respect.
  • The ability to perform up to 30–40 high-quality spay and neuter surgeries per day in a fast-paced, team-oriented environment.
  • Strong communication skills, a collaborative spirit, and a passion for advancing animal welfare through accessible veterinary care.
  • Dakin is committed to supporting recent graduates and candidates with limited HQHVSN experience by providing training and mentorship to those who demonstrate a genuine interest in building a long-term career in this area of veterinary medicine.
Benefits include:
  • Ample amounts of PTO (like 30 days in your second year of full-time employment, and 35 days in your third year, in addition to 5 paid holidays)
  • Health, dental, and vision insurance
  • Flexible Spending Account
  • 100% employer-paid Life Insurance Policy
  • Employee Assistance Program
  • 401k with employer-paid advisors
  • Discounted pet care for your pets
  • Generous continuing education allotment with paid days off, in addition to regular PTO
  • Annual reimbursements for license fees, liability insurance, and professional membership dues
  • Eligibility for the Non-Profit Student Loan Forgiveness Program
Salary:

$115,000 to $125,000 - Additional compensation consideration may be given to candidates with significant surgical experience.
