What types of projects or tasks do spatial reasoning professionals typically work on?

Spatial reasoning professionals often engage in projects like urban planning, transportation logistics, mapping, land use analysis, and site selection. Their typical tasks may include analyzing spatial data sets, creating digital or physical maps, utilizing GIS tools to interpret trends, and collaborating with engineers, planners, or surveyors to provide actionable recommendations. The work environment can vary from office-based settings to fieldwork, depending on the industry and project phase. Professionals in this field frequently contribute to teams handling large-scale projects where spatial accuracy and careful data interpretation are crucial. Job description

Drafting & Documentation Technician

K Group Companies | Grand Rapids, MI | Full-Time | On-Site

Role Overview

The Documentation Technician converts existing building floor plans into standardized Microsoft Visio diagrams that support the physical security systems K Group installs and maintains. Using architectural floor plans, PDFs, evacuation maps, and other existing site documentation, you'll recreate building layouts in Visio and accurately document cameras, access control devices, nurse-call systems, and other low-voltage assets.

This is not an engineering, architectural design, or CAD design role. Instead, you'll recreate existing building floor plans in Microsoft Visio and produce accurate, standardized documentation used by our service and operations teams. If you enjoy detail-oriented work, have strong spatial awareness, and take pride in producing organized, accurate documentation, you'll thrive in this role.

Core Responsibilities

Diagram Production

  • Produce accurate Visio floor plans from existing site drawings, recreating walls, doors, and major areas to scale.
  • Plot security devices - cameras, card readers, door contacts, nurse-call components, and related assets - using K Group's standard symbol set.
  • Deliver both a base layout and a with-devices version for every site.

Standards & Library

  • Apply K Group diagramming standards consistently across every site.
  • Maintain an organized, version-controlled library of site diagrams.
  • Update diagrams as field conditions change or new information comes in.

Coordination & Source Gathering

  • Interpret and reconcile inconsistent source documents - and flag when something doesn't add up rather than reproducing an error.
  • Coordinate directly with Service Delivery Coordinators and Field Service Technicians to track down missing or unclear information.
  • Request original drawings from sites when better source material is likely to exist.

What Success Looks Like - Your First Year

Success in this role will be measured by your ability to:

  • Produce accurate, standardized Visio diagrams with minimal revisions.
  • Build and maintain an organized library of site documentation.
  • Consistently meet turnaround expectations for new site documentation.
  • Identify and resolve documentation discrepancies by collaborating with Field Service Technicians and Service Delivery Coordinators.
  • Contribute to the continuous improvement of K Group's documentation standards, templates, and symbol library.

Experience & Qualifications

  • Strong spatial reasoning - you can look at a building drawing and understand the space it represents.
  • Exceptional attention to detail and a low tolerance for "close enough."
  • Comfort interpreting architectural or construction drawings.
  • Initiative and follow-through - you chase down answers instead of guessing.
  • Comfortable with structured, repeatable work done to a consistent standard.
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Visio, or clear aptitude with similar diagramming/drafting tools. We provide training and ramp-up support, so demonstrated aptitude counts as much as prior Visio hours.

Bonus qualifications:

  • Exposure to CAD, GIS digitization, drafting, or evacuation/floor-plan production.
  • Familiarity with low-voltage or physical security devices.
  • Any background that involves reading building plans - facilities, construction, interior design, or architecture.

Reporting & Structure

Reports to: Sales Engineering Manager

Team: Physical Security

Location: Grand Rapids, MI (On-Site)
