Spacex Design information

What is SpaceX design?

SpaceX Design refers to the team and processes responsible for designing the visual and functional aspects of SpaceX's rockets, spacecraft, spacesuits, and related systems. This includes industrial design, user interface design, and the creation of ergonomic environments for astronauts and engineers. The goal of the SpaceX Design team is to ensure that all products are not only highly functional and safe but also intuitive and visually appealing. They work closely with engineers and technicians to bring innovative ideas from concept to reality.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a SpaceX design engineer?

To thrive as a SpaceX Design Engineer, you need a solid background in mechanical or aerospace engineering, proficiency in CAD design, and a strong understanding of materials and manufacturing processes, usually supported by a relevant engineering degree. Expertise in technical tools like CATIA, SolidWorks, Siemens NX, and simulation software, as well as familiarity with GD&T and rapid prototyping, is commonly required. Exceptional problem-solving, creativity, and collaboration skills are vital for innovating and working effectively within cross-functional teams. These skills and qualities ensure the delivery of cutting-edge, reliable aerospace designs that meet rigorous technical and safety standards.

What are the typical challenges faced by designers working at SpaceX, and how can applicants prepare for them?

Designers at SpaceX frequently encounter challenges such as working within highly accelerated timelines, adapting to evolving project requirements, and collaborating across multidisciplinary teams. The environment is fast-paced and innovation-driven, requiring individuals to balance creativity with stringent engineering and safety constraints. Applicants can prepare by developing strong problem-solving skills, familiarity with aerospace standards, and experience in rapid prototyping or iterative design processes. Being adaptable and proactive in communication is also essential for success in this dynamic environment.

This team is responsible for the delivery of large capital projects to various internal customer groups across the company. This position is based out of the McGregor/Waco area. Travel may accompany this role, and based on business needs, opportunities to work at other SpaceX facilities may occur in the future.
RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Write, negotiate, and manage construction contracts with subcontractors across multiple disciplines through contract close-out
  • Resolve design and construction conflicts in the field in real-time
  • Coordinate with electrical utility provider for design/engineering to ensure reliable power service to critical site infrastructure
  • Interact with engineers, contractors, fabricators, and project stakeholders

BASIC QUALIFICATIONS:
  • Bachelor's degree in electrical engineering, mechanical engineering, or other engineering discipline
  • 3+ years of professional experience with the design or build of MEP building systems

PREFERRED SKILLS AND EXPERIENCE:
  • Primary experience with electrical and power distribution systems (<600Vac)
  • Knowledge of HVAC operation and design principles including refrigeration, chillers, boilers, and air-handling equipment
  • Experience with plumbing design and operation including domestic water, wastewater, venting, and storm systems
  • Working knowledge of delta/wye transformers, building lighting, building construction specifications, and facility grounding
  • Experience with critical power infrastructure including UPS systems, backup generators, and automatic transfer switches
  • Experience creating and implementing process/design solutions with minimal impact to business operations
  • Able to quickly assess an issue and assist technicians with troubleshooting and repair
  • Ability to work in a high-concentration, high-stress environment, under possible extended work hours and tight deadlines
  • Acute attention to detail, ability to see interactions with other systems to avoid problems
  • AutoCAD/Revit - Beginner to intermediate skill level
  • Familiarity with National Electric Code, ASHRAE, National Fire Protection Association, and International Building Code

ADDITIONAL REQUIREMENTS:
  • Must be available to work extended hours and weekends when needed, based on site operational needs; flexibility is required
  • This role requires you to be onsite - remote or hybrid work will not be considered
  • Perform hands-on work in all environments (heat, cold, rain), in tight quarters or at heights
  • Must be able to work extended hours and weekends as needed
