Job description

Hoos First: First-Generation and Limited-Income Student Initiatives
Hoos First serves as the hub for the first-generation and limited-income student experience at UVA. We aim to empower, support, and advocate for students who historically may find difficulty in navigating the college process. Our student-centered programming highlights the network of services and resources available at the University of Virginia such as personal well-being, social engagement, career development, graduate school preparation, financial literacy, and academic support.
From a student's first day on Grounds until those closing minutes of Final Exercises, our team is committed to making sure that the Wahoo experience is accessible and enjoyable for all!
Hoos First Student Center
The Hoos First Student Center serves as a gathering space for the first-generation and limited-income student community and allies at UVA. The Center offers a wealth of resources for students to engage with, including books and games, graduate school test prep and study books, a wellness corner, an affirmations wall, and more. The Center features lounge areas, a presentation space, and a conference room. All UVA community members are welcome in the Hoos First Student Center!
Undergraduate Intern Job Summary
Hoos First undergraduate interns will gain practical, hands-on administrative and leadership experience, and collaborate with diverse populations of students, faculty, and staff. These positions work to increase community involvement and to enhance students' collegiate experience by supporting the initiatives of Hoos First.
Interns will also staff the front desk as needed and provide hospitality services for students, student leaders, CIOs, and other guests utilizing the space. Under the supervision of Hoos First professional staff, interns will perform a range of duties, including program development, community outreach, and assisting with special projects that support the Hoos First mission.
Undergraduate Intern Position Responsibilities
Hoos First Undergraduate Interns will support the Hoos First staff with a variety of administrative and programmatic responsibilities such as the following:
Student Support and Resource Navigation
  • Serve as a welcoming and knowledgeable Resource Navigator for students and provide peer mentorship.

  • Assist students in identifying and connecting with campus resources that support academic success, financial well-being, personal wellness, and belonging.

Program Support and Community Engagement
  • Support Hoos First signature events, partner programs, and student engagement initiatives.

  • Represent Hoos First through outreach efforts and interactions with students, families, campus partners, and community members.

Center Operations and Hospitality
  • Perform opening/closing duties and help maintain a clean, organized, and inviting space.

  • Monitor and maintain Center inventory, supplies, resources, and reservations.

  • Greet and support visitors/groups participating in university or Center programming.

Administrative Support and Additional Responsibilities
  • Support professional staff with operational needs and other duties as assigned, including but not limited to printing, copying, scanning, filing, and maintaining office materials.

  • Assist with documenting and promoting Hoos First programs, services, and events.

  • Attend required trainings, meetings, and planning sessions.

  • Maintain professionalism, reliability, and confidentiality.

  • Perform other duties as assigned.

Project Hours
Projects will be assigned based on office priorities, student strengths, interests, and professional development goals and may include:
  • Marketing and communications
  • Social media and content creation
  • Website updates
  • Event planning and assessment
  • Student outreach and engagement
  • Partnership development
  • Resource development and research
  • Other strategic initiatives that support the mission of Hoos First

Terms of Employment
  • Hours: Shifts are scheduled between 10AM-9PM daily
  • Hours Per Week: Up to 20 hours per week based on Center needs. Hours will differ based on Center needs, assigned tasks, and FWS availability
  • Pay Range: $13.50-$14.50 per hour depending on experience
  • Duration: Academic Year 2026-2027, August 25, 2026 - May 14, 2027.
  • Position responsibilities may change depending on strategic priorities and the needs of Hoos First

Eligibility Requirements
  • Applicants must be full-time undergraduates
  • Federal Work Study eligibility required
  • Must be in good academic and judicial/disciplinary standing
  • Excellent interpersonal and communication skills
  • Must be able to perform moderately heavy physical duties (i.e., lifting and setting up boxes and furniture up to 30 lbs.)
  • Experience communicating and partnering with a diverse group of stakeholders preferred
