What is a space designer?

Space designers are professionals who specialize in planning and creating functional, aesthetically pleasing environments within buildings or outdoor areas. They assess how spaces will be used and design layouts, select furnishings, and coordinate colors and materials to enhance the experience and usability of the area. Space designers may work on residential, commercial, retail, or public spaces and often collaborate with architects, clients, and other stakeholders to bring their visions to life. Their expertise includes spatial planning, ergonomics, and understanding how design impacts human behavior.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a space designer?

To thrive as a Space Designer, you need a strong background in interior design, spatial planning, and architectural principles, often supported by a relevant degree or certification. Proficiency with design software such as AutoCAD, SketchUp, and Adobe Creative Suite is typically required. Exceptional creativity, attention to detail, and effective client communication are vital soft skills in this field. These abilities ensure that functional, aesthetically pleasing, and client-focused spaces are created efficiently and successfully.

How does a space designer typically collaborate with clients and other professionals during a project?

Space Designers work closely with clients to understand their needs, preferences, and functional requirements, often starting with consultations and site visits. Throughout the project, they collaborate with architects, engineers, contractors, and sometimes interior decorators to ensure that the design aligns with safety standards, budget constraints, and project timelines. Effective communication and regular updates are crucial, as Space Designers often serve as a bridge between the client’s vision and the technical execution. This collaborative approach helps ensure the final result is both aesthetically pleasing and practical.

What is the difference between Space Designer vs Interior Designer?

AspectSpace DesignerInterior Designer
CredentialsTypically requires a degree in interior design or architecture, with certification in space planningRequires a degree in interior design, with certification often including NCIDQ or similar
Work EnvironmentFocuses on space planning, layout, and functional design, often collaborating with architects and clientsEmphasizes aesthetics, color schemes, furniture, and decor, working closely with clients and vendors
Industry UsageCommon in commercial, residential, and hospitality projects for spatial planningUsed across residential, commercial, and hospitality sectors for interior aesthetics

While both roles involve designing interior spaces, a Space Designer primarily focuses on space planning and functional layout, whereas an Interior Designer emphasizes aesthetics and decor. The roles often overlap, but their core responsibilities differ based on project needs.

How do you become a space designer?

To become a space designer, typically one needs a bachelor's degree in interior design, architecture, or a related field, along with strong skills in computer-aided design (CAD) software. Gaining experience through internships or entry-level positions and building a portfolio are important steps in establishing a career in space design.

MISSION FIRST
Anduril Industries is a defense technology company with a mission to transform U.S. and allied military capabilities with advanced technology. By bringing the expertise, technology, and business model of the 21st century's most innovative companies to the defense industry, Anduril is changing how military systems are designed, built and sold. Anduril's family of systems is powered by Lattice OS, an AI-powered operating system that turns thousands of data streams into a realtime, 3D command and control center. As the world enters an era of strategic competition, Anduril is committed to bringing cutting-edge autonomy, AI, computer vision, sensor fusion, and networking technology to the military in months, not years.
The centralized Software Product Design & Research team serves as the connective tissue across Anduril's ecosystem of software experiences - ensuring that products and workflows scale thoughtfully across platforms, mission types, and domains. You will join the central team as a mission product designer - deployed to support Anduril's Space organization alongside peer designers focused on this domain. Together, you will own the design direction for spacecraft mission planning and sensor network command & control experiences, working closely with specialized stakeholders including space systems engineers, technical product managers, and operators in mission-critical environments. As part of the central team, you'll maintain full access to the broader design community for critique, collaboration, and knowledge sharing while building deep expertise in space operations that have immediate real-world impact.
THE ROLE
This role will aligned directly within the Space business line to forward its overarching goal of space domain awareness. You will partner with the existing design and engineering functions, touching on space-domain command & control, ground and space vehicle operations, autonomy, and more. Specifically, this role will focus on the Operator experience, split between internal R&D and external customer programs, both ground-based and space-based (on-vehicle), depending on the maturity and requirements of the specific program. As only the third designer in this vertical, this is a unique opportunity to play an influential role in shaping the end-to-end experiences for critical operator workflows.
WHAT YOU'LL DO
  • Own the design process from discovery to delivery, partnering closely with the Space team's existing product designers to define mission planning and command & control experiences for our internal Operators and Space Force Guardians.
  • Working together, define Space design team principles and general design direction the Space domain with guidance from design leadership.
  • Progressively take ownership of shared features needed for Anduril's space programs, while upholding critical team principles of consistency and maximize reuse across programs, and, over time, developing increasing autonomy in executing your specific feature areas.
  • Lead discovery and validation through problem decomposition sessions with internal operators and collaborative workshops with stakeholders; synthesize findings into design decisions for critical operator workflows.
  • Familiarize yourself with existing variants of Mission Planning across Anduril including Maritime and Aerial Autonomy to identify opportunities for strategic reuse and adaptation - leveraging Anduril's existing design system originally developed for ground, maritime, and air to extend and adapt it to unique requirements for the space domain.
  • Shape how product design integrates with engineering & product management through close collaboration, iterative prototyping, and hands-on implementation guidance.
  • Ensure your work is easy to follow through strong narrative skills, journey maps, user workflows, high fidelity mockups, and documentation rigor.
  • Share and participate in team critique to learn Anduril-wide implementations of Lattice and features specific to the space domain.
  • Partner with our design systems team to evolve the underlying platform through your work at the edge.
REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS
  • 4+ years of experience in product design, UX, or HCI, with a proven ability to execute high-craft, technically informed solutions.
  • Developing autonomy in design execution with ability to work independently on feature-level work while seeking guidance on complex ambiguities.
  • Deep expertise in visual and interaction design with proven ability to design complex technical workflows where precision, clarity, and attention to detail are critical; portfolio demonstrating elegant solutions and high craft quality.
  • Systems thinking mindset with ability to map user journeys across multiple user types and operational contexts.
  • Strong prototyping skills to drive clarity in decision-making.
  • Ability to communicate the "why" behind design decisions; work demonstrating having navigated complex stakeholder requirements across engineering, product, and business teams.
  • No prior defense experience necessary - we are looking for designers who can bring diverse perspectives to hard problems.
  • Must be eligible to obtain and maintain a U.S. TS clearance with SCI eligibility.
PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS
  • Experience designing for technical operator-focused software in domains such as aerospace, industrial control systems, logistics, robotics, or similar complex operational contexts.
  • Familiarity with workflows involving planning, commanding, visualization, or monitoring of distributed systems.
  • Track record of delivering high-quality design work in fast-paced, mission-critical environments with shifting priorities and ambiguity.
  • Experience working within established design systems while contributing thoughtful extensions for domain-specific needs.
  • Experience leading user research sessions including customer discovery, usability testing, and synthesis of complex feedback loops.
  • Facilitation skills to lead workshops, guide cross-functional alignment, and strategic decision-making.
  • Familiarity with designing for constrained or high-stakes / safety critical environments.
