Primary Purpose of the Organizational Unit
UNC Greensboro is minority serving institution with an undergraduate population of 53% ethnic minority students and 67% female students. The College of Visual and Performing Arts seeks to attract an equally diverse applicant pool for this position. UNC Greensboro is an inclusive learning community with a campus-wide culture that embodies access, equity, diversity, excellence, and collaboration. With an enrollment of over 18,000 students, including 3,500 graduate students, and 2,800 faculty and staff, UNC Greensboro is one of the most diverse universities in the UNC system. UNC Greensboro is located in a metropolitan area of more than 1.6 million in the Piedmont region of North Carolina, between the Atlantic Ocean and the Appalachian Mountains. UNC Greensboro is an EOE/Affirmative Action/M/F/D/V employer and is strongly committed to increasing faculty diversity.
The School's art history faculty shares a building with the Weatherspoon Art Museum, home to one of the strongest collections of modern and contemporary American art in the Southeast. Museum staff are dedicated to working closely with students and faculty, including recent co-curatorial projects and an annual faculty fellowship. The Weatherspoon is currently transforming its first-floor wing into the Cole Levin Center for Art and Human Understanding, beginning in May 2026. The Cole Levin Center will place humanist inquiry at the core of the museum's mission and be a resource for object-based teaching and learning that extends throughout the university and into the community. Additional arts and culture venues in Greensboro include the School of Art's Gatewood Gallery and downtown Greensboro Project Space, a gallery venue for experimental productions and installations, and the International Civil Rights Center & Museum, a historic landmark and educational organization. Finally, in Fall 2026, the newly constructed Jeanne Tannenbaum Center for Creative Practice will open on campus as a space dedicated to innovation for an array of forms and disciplines, with technology for teaching, research, and community development.
