The Sr. Supplier Quality Surveillance (SQS) Engineer - Welding & NDE is responsible for supplier quality surveillance, inspection, testing, and acceptance of fabricated and welded equipment and materials manufactured for major industrial, power, energy, and EPC projects.

This position will serve as a technical quality representative with a strong focus on welding, fabrication, Non-Destructive Examination (NDE/NDT), material control, and supplier quality surveillance.
The successful candidate will have a minimum of 10 years of directly relevant experience in supplier quality, fabrication inspection, welding inspection, NDE, manufacturing surveillance, or QA/QC. The candidate must have demonstrated experience evaluating welding processes, welder qualifications, weld quality, NDE methods and results, material traceability, and supplier compliance with applicable codes, specifications, drawings, and purchase-order requirements.

This position requires approximately 25% travel to supplier manufacturing facilities, fabrication shops, testing facilities, and project sites. Domestic and occasional international travel may be required depending on supplier and project needs.

The SQS Engineer will work closely with Engineering, Procurement, Project Management, Construction, suppliers, clients, and third-party inspection agencies to ensure supplied equipment and materials meet contractual quality requirements prior to release and shipment.

This position is based in Lenexa, KS (Kansas City area).

   Perform supplier quality surveillance and source inspections at manufacturing and fabrication facilities.
   Perform surveillance of welding, fabrication, NDE, heat treatment, material control, dimensional inspection, testing, and final acceptance activities.
   Review supplier Inspection and Test Plans (ITPs) and establish appropriate review, surveillance, witness, and hold points based on equipment criticality and project requirements.
   Review purchase orders, specifications, drawings, datasheets, supplier procedures, quality plans, and applicable codes and standards prior to performing supplier surveillance.
   Review and verify Welding Procedure Specifications (WPS), Procedure Qualification Records (PQR), and Welder/Welding Operator Performance Qualifications (WPQ/WQTR) for compliance with applicable codes and project requirements.
   Verify that welding procedures are appropriate for the applicable base materials, filler metals, welding processes, thickness ranges, positions, preheat/interpass requirements, and service conditions.
   Perform in-process welding surveillance
   Perform or witness visual inspection of welds and fabricated components for compliance with applicable acceptance criteria.
   Review and evaluate supplier NDE/NDT procedures, technician qualifications, examination reports, and results.
   Provide surveillance and technical oversight of NDE activities including:
o    Visual Testing (VT)
o    Liquid Penetrant Testing (PT)
o    Magnetic Particle Testing (MT)
o    Ultrasonic Testing (UT)
o    Phased Array Ultrasonic Testing (PAUT), where applicable
o    Time of Flight Diffraction (TOFD), where applicable
o    Radiographic Testing (RT)
o    Positive Material Identification (PMI), where applicable
   Verify NDE personnel qualifications and certifications meet applicable project, code, and employer written-practice requirements.
   Evaluate NDE indications and reports to confirm proper interpretation and disposition in accordance with applicable acceptance criteria.
   Review weld maps, NDE maps, repair maps, weld logs, and associated manufacturing quality records.
   Verify material identification and traceability from receipt through fabrication and final assembly, including review of Material Test Reports/Material Test Certificates (MTRs/MTCs).
   Verify base materials, filler metals, piping components, and other critical materials comply with purchase-order and specification requirements.
   Witness dimensional inspections, pressure tests, hydrostatic/pneumatic tests, functional tests, and other manufacturing tests as required by the approved ITP.
   Monitor supplier compliance with approved fabrication and manufacturing procedures.
   Identify, document, and track nonconformances (NCRs), deficiencies, punch-list items, and supplier quality issues.
   Review supplier corrective-action responses and verify implementation and satisfactory closure.

   Bachelor's degree in Welding Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Materials/Metallurgical Engineering, Engineering Technology, Quality, or a related technical discipline preferred. Significant directly relevant welding, NDE, and supplier-quality experience may be considered in lieu of an engineering degree where appropriate.
   Minimum 7 years of directly relevant experience in supplier quality surveillance, welding inspection, fabrication inspection, NDE/NDT, manufacturing quality, or QA/QC.
   Demonstrated hands-on experience performing supplier/manufacturing surveillance of welded and fabricated equipment.
   Strong knowledge of welding processes such as SMAW, GTAW, GMAW, FCAW, and SAW, as applicable.
   Demonstrated ability to review and interpret WPSs, PQRs, welder qualifications, weld maps, NDE reports, MTRs, drawings, specifications, and ITPs.
   Strong working knowledge of welding metallurgy, weld discontinuities, fabrication practices, welding consumables, heat treatment, material traceability, and weld repair.
   Strong working knowledge of NDE methods and their appropriate application, limitations, and acceptance criteria.
   Working knowledge of applicable industry codes and standards such as ASME Section IX, ASME Section V, AWS D1.1, ASME B31 series, ASME Section VIII, API, ASTM, and applicable project specifications, depending on equipment type.
   Experience reviewing and interpreting NDE results from VT, PT, MT, UT, and RT.
   Ability to independently determine whether supplier fabrication and welding activities comply with approved drawings, specifications, procedures, codes, standards, and purchase-order requirements.
   Experience with NCR identification, root-cause/corrective-action processes, and verification of corrective-action closure.
   Strong technical report-writing and documentation skills.
   Strong communication skills with the ability to professionally interface with suppliers, clients, Engineering, Procurement, Project Management, and third-party inspectors.
   Ability to manage multiple supplier assignments and priorities with limited supervision.
   Ability and willingness to travel approximately 25% of the time, including domestic and occasional international travel as required.

Preferred Qualifications
   AWS Certified Welding Inspector (CWI) certification strongly preferred.
   ASNT Level II or Level III certification/qualification in one or more NDE methods is strongly preferred.
   Experience with PAUT and/or TOFD examination techniques is preferred.
   Previous supplier quality experience supporting large EPC, power generation, oil and gas, petrochemical, LNG, industrial, mining, infrastructure, or major capital projects.
   Experience inspecting pressure vessels, piping, structural steel, tanks, skids/modules, rotating equipment components, heat exchangers, boilers, or other critical fabricated equipment.
   Experience performing supplier audits and evaluating supplier quality management systems.
   Familiarity with ISO 9001 quality management systems.
   Experience coordinating third-party inspection agencies and NDE service providers.
   Familiarity with supplier quality surveillance levels, inspection assignment packages, inspection release notes, and vendor data requirements.
   Experience with alloy materials, stainless steels, low-alloy steels, duplex materials, or other specialty metallurgy is considered an asset.
