What is sound design?

Sound design is the process of creating, recording, manipulating, and mixing audio elements for various media, such as film, television, video games, theater, and music production. Sound designers are responsible for crafting everything from ambient background noises to specific sound effects that enhance the audience's experience. Their work can involve recording real-world sounds, synthesizing new ones, and editing audio to fit a project's needs. Sound design is essential for building atmosphere, conveying moods, and supporting storytelling in audiovisual productions.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a sound designer, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Sound Designer, you need a deep understanding of audio engineering, acoustics, and creative sound creation, often supported by a degree in audio production or a related field. Familiarity with digital audio workstations (DAWs) like Pro Tools or Ableton Live, as well as experience with sound libraries and audio editing software, is essential. Strong collaboration, creativity, and attention to detail set exceptional sound designers apart. These skills ensure the creation of immersive and high-quality audio experiences that enhance storytelling across various media.

How does a sound designer typically collaborate with directors and other production team members during a project?

Job description

At R-V Industries, our work is much more than designing and building world-class industrial process equipment. Not only are we impacting everyday life in the world we serve, but we are providing a quality of life to our employees and their families.

  • Every day, we come together to build stronger relationships with our vendors, our customers, and each other, so we can solve challenging problems, and continue to improve the safety, quality, and efficiency of all that we do.
  • Caring matters at R-V. We care for each other, our safety, our quality, our learning, and our growth.
  • We seek out diversity of thought, experience, and strengths in individuals, so we can continue to innovate as a team.
  • We believe when we bring our true full selves to serve others, it elevates the quality of life for all.
  • As with all Job Descriptions at R-V, this job is considered safety-sensitive.

GENERAL JOB DESCRIPTION
R-V Industries is a design and build manufacturer of custom industrial process equipment and specialty machinery, engineered and fabricated in our own shops by our in-house fabricators, machinists, and mechanical and electrical assemblers. The Mechanical Design Engineer is responsible for the mechanical design, sizing calculations, and detailed documentation of custom equipment built to job specifications, applicable codes, and demanding customer requirements.

DUTIES/RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Design custom mechanical equipment and machinery — including paper-market roll, frame, and drive systems and coal/power combustion fabrications such as windboxes and nozzle assemblies — in a manner that supports job specifications, applicable codes, customer requirements, and good engineering practice.
  • Perform and document sizing and stress/failure calculations — including gearbox, motor, paper roll, frame, and guide-system sizing for Heavy Machine Automation work, windbox calculations for Combustion (Coal/Power) work, and pneumatic/hydraulic actuator and linear-actuator selection.
  • Grow into a technical leader on the team — own the engineering quality of the work you touch, set the example for thoroughness in calculations and documentation, mentor less-experienced engineers and designers through design reviews and one-on-one coaching, raise concerns early and constructively, and represent R-V’s technical position with confidence in front of customers and internal stakeholders.
  • Own the PO and specification review and all technical documentation required to build, assemble, test, and ship the equipment, including drawings, component specifications, bills of materials, and procedures.
  • Digest project and customer specifications for manufacturing use, and create Bills of Materials with all technical requirements defined for Purchasing — including buyout components such as gearboxes, motors, and bearings, or combustion parts such as nozzles and windbox components.
  • Assist Sales, Project Managers, Purchasing, Quality, Manufacturing, Testing, and Installation with all issues related to the contract, and execute projects from a budget and schedule standpoint for all technical tasks.
  • Communicate with customers’ technical personnel on all matters related to design, specification interpretation, and pertinent technical requirements.

SKILLS/QUALIFICATIONS:
Required Skills:

Minimum of 5 years of progressive machine design experience, including some or all of the following:

  • Heavy machine and drive-system design — gearboxes, motors, paper rolls, frames, and guide systems
  • Stress/failure and sizing calculations
  • Pneumatic/hydraulic actuator design and selection of linear actuators
  • Sensor selection and implementation
  • P&ID creation
  • Sheet-metal, plate, and weldment design for large custom fabrications
  • Material selection and design for high-temperature and severe-service applications
  • Design for manufacturability, tolerance stack-up, and compliance with applicable codes and customer specifications
  • 3+ years of experience with SolidWorks or Inventor.
  • Demonstrated desire and character to grow into a leadership role at R-V. We expect a future technical leader to show:
    • Sound technical judgment — knowing when to follow the specification letter-for-letter, when to ask for guidance, and when to push back on a customer or vendor.
    • Ownership mentality — taking responsibility for the full lifecycle of a project from design through test and installation, and following through on commitments without being chased.
    • Mentorship instinct — willingness to teach calculation methods, specification interpretation, and drafting standards to less-experienced engineers and designers.
    • Clear, respectful communication — able to explain technical decisions to non-engineers, write documentation others can follow, and disagree without making it personal.
    • Commitment to continuous improvement — actively learning new methods, materials, and software, and proposing better ways to do the work.
  • Checking detailed drawings
  • Sizing components and creating calculation packages
  • Creating complete machine designs, including general arrangement and detailed drawings
  • Writing specifications for buyout components
  • Creating Bills of Materials for purchasing and production
  • Strong communication, organizational, and interpersonal skills, positive team player, passion for continuous learning and improvement.

Willing to Train the Right Candidate:

  • AWS welding symbol understanding
  • Project management experience
  • Geometric dimensioning and tolerancing (GD&T)
  • Active PE License in the state of PA with machine design as your area of expertise is a plus; support is available in obtaining a PE License (or EIT)

EDUCATIONAL/PHYSICAL REQUIERMENTS:

  • Bachelor’s degree in Mechanical Engineering or equivalent
  • Must be able to perform all essential functions of the job with or without accommodation
  • Travel required up to 20%.
