Sound Assistant information

What is a sound assistant?

Sound Assistants are professionals who support the sound department on film, television, or live event productions. Their main duties include setting up and maintaining audio equipment, assisting with microphone placement, managing cables, and helping the sound recordist or mixer capture high-quality audio. They often work on set, ensuring that all audio elements function smoothly and troubleshooting any technical issues that arise. Sound Assistants play a crucial role in achieving clear and professional sound on productions.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a sound assistant?

To thrive as a Sound Assistant, you need a solid understanding of audio recording principles, microphone techniques, and basic sound editing, often supported by relevant coursework or a degree in audio production. Familiarity with industry-standard equipment such as boom microphones, mixers, and digital audio recorders, as well as proficiency in software like Pro Tools or Adobe Audition, is highly valuable. Strong teamwork, attention to detail, and effective communication help you anticipate the needs of sound engineers and collaborate smoothly on set. These skills and qualities are crucial for capturing clear, high-quality audio and ensuring efficient workflows during production.

What are some common challenges a sound assistant faces when working on live productions?

Sound Assistants in live productions often encounter fast-paced environments where quick troubleshooting and adaptability are crucial. They may need to resolve unexpected technical issues, such as microphone dropouts or interference, while ensuring that all equipment is properly set up and maintained before and during the event. Close communication with the sound team and other departments is essential to coordinate cues and changes efficiently. Being proactive, detail-oriented, and able to remain calm under pressure greatly helps in overcoming these challenges.

What is the difference between Sound Assistant vs Sound Engineer?

AspectSound AssistantSound Engineer

Work EnvironmentFilm sets, recording studios, live events, post-production facilitiesRecording studios, broadcast stations, film sets, live sound venues
Job ResponsibilitiesAssist with equipment setup, basic sound editing, and support tasksDesign, record, mix, and master audio; oversee sound quality

While both roles work within the audio industry, a Sound Assistant primarily supports sound teams with technical tasks and setup, whereas a Sound Engineer takes on more advanced responsibilities like designing and mixing audio. The Sound Engineer role typically requires more education and experience, making it a more specialized position in the industry.

Job description

Overview

At KPMG in Canada, our people bring their unique perspectives to Canadaโ€™s most important challenges. Here, you can build momentum that reaches beyond our business, develop skills for the future, and take ownership of your career with support at every stage. Join a firm where your career can make a difference.

We are seeking an experienced and highly trusted professional to support the Prairies Region Managing Partner. This individual will provide comprehensive administrative support while operating as a strategic associate and will play an integral part in enhancing leadership effectivenessโ€”optimizing time, streamlining communications, and coordinating key priorities across the region. You will contribute to the successful execution of strategic initiatives, ensuring alignment, momentum, and operational excellence.

Leveraging sound judgment, strong organizational awareness, and the ability to anticipate needs, you will act as a key enabler of leadership impact. This role requires a high degree of professionalism, discretion, and precision, with accountability for delivering projects efficiently and maintaining exceptional attention to detail.

What you will do
  • Provide high-impact, strategic administrative support to the Managing Partner, including proactive ownership of complex calendars, executive-level meeting coordination, and travel planning with a focus on maximizing leadership effectiveness.
  • Act as a key enabler of strategic priorities by ensuring continuity across initiativesโ€”tracking decisions, monitoring timelines, and driving follow-through on deliverables, while supporting the preparation of leadership materials and high-stakes meetings.
  • Serve as a trusted liaison and relationship connector, building and maintaining strong networks with internal senior leaders and external stakeholders, including C-suite contacts, to support regional priorities and business development efforts.
  • Contribute to the advancement of strategic relationships by supporting leadership in identifying opportunities to strengthen market presence, client engagement, and growth across the Prairies region.
  • Support leadership participation in key governance forums, committees, and priority initiatives, demonstrating strong judgment, discretion, and organizational awareness.
  • Coordinate and support the Managing Partnerโ€™s co-chair responsibilities for fundraising campaigns, ensuring seamless planning, stakeholder engagement, and execution.
  • Leverage emerging technologies, including AI-enabled tools, to enhance productivity, streamline processes, and introduce innovative approaches to administrative and operational work.
  • Draft, refine, and distribute high-quality communications that are aligned, clear, and reflective of leadership voice and messaging.

At times, business needs arise and employees are required and agree to work beyond their normal work day or work week to fulfill the accountabilities required for their job. Likewise, people need time to devote to personal matters, and our approach to flexibility provides for this.

What you bring to the role
  • 5+ years of executive-level administrative experience, with demonstrated success supporting senior leaders in complex, fast-paced environments.
  • A strong orientation toward innovation and continuous improvement, with a genuine interest in leveraging AI and new technologies to enhance ways of working.
  • Proven ability to build and sustain trusted relationships, with the confidence and credibility to engage effectively with senior leaders and external stakeholders.
  • Experience contributing to business development or relationship-building activities, with an understanding of how to support leadership in generating and nurturing strategic opportunities.
  • Strong project coordination and organizational skills, with the ability to manage competing priorities, anticipate needs, and deliver against tight deadlines.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills in English, with the ability to produce polished, executive-ready materials.
  • Advanced proficiency in Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, PowerPoint) and a high level of digital fluency.
  • Exceptional attention to detail, sound judgment, and the ability to handle sensitive information with discretion and professionalism.
