Job description

Job Code – Title: Sorting Room Worker - Department: Greenville, NC Thrift Store - FLSA: Non-Exempt - Reports to: Carolyn Marie PaigeJ

08/26/2026 Until candidate is hired

Job Summary:
Receives, sorts, prices and prepares donated items for display in the store; determines suitability and pricing of items based on established standards; assists in maintaining the orderliness and cleanliness of the store and sorting room area.


Essential Functions:
This job description should not be interpreted as all inclusive. It is intended to identify the essential functions and requirements of this position. The incumbent may be requested to perform job-related responsibilities and tasks other than those stated in this job description.

Sorting Room Responsibilities (50%) Receives, inspects and sorts donated items such as clothes, shoes, household items, Bric-a-Brack, etc. 
according to the category and condition; selects items suitable for store display and distributes same to 
appropriate area for further sorting and/or pricing; discards items in accordance with established 
procedures. Tags items with specially coded tickets and/or prices in accordance with established procedures; hangs 
clothes on hangers and places same on clothes racks. Packs items in boxes and marks boxes accordingly; assists in transporting boxes to appropriate storage 
area; lifts and carries items to the appropriate destination for further processing, storage or displaying in store. Prepares non-suitable clothes for the baler.

Sorting Room Orderliness and Cleanliness Responsibilities (50%) 
Maintains warehouse area in a neat and orderly manner; cleans floors, tables and work areas. Places and arranges items in the store as directed; checks all store displays to ensure that items are maintained and displayed in a neat and orderly manner; rotates and/or rearranges stock as directed; returns items to the proper location after customers have handled. Cleans all display racks and shelves; sweeps and mops floors; cleans windows and mirrors; ensures that the store is maintained in a clean and inviting manner.

Other Responsibilities:
Inspects donated items to ensure they can be used according to established policies and procedures. Assists customers in carrying purchased/donated items in/out of the store. Performs other duties as assigned.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:
Ability to work effectively and cooperatively with co-workers.
Ability to present a positive and professional image of The Salvation Army.
Ability to work independently and with limited supervision.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS REQUIRED:
Education and Experience:
High school diploma or G.E.D. preferred,
And
One year experience working in a warehouse preferred,

Or
any equivalent combination of training and experience providing the required knowledge, skills and abilities.
 

Certifications:
None.

Physical Requirements:
Ability to meet attendance requirements.
Ability to read, write and communicate the English language effectively.
Ability to perform continuous walking, stooping, standing, and some climbing.
Duties are usually performed standing. Standing may be relieved by brief or occasional periods of sitting.
Moderate physical effort required associated with sitting, walking, standing, lifting, bending, reaching, 
twisting, pushing, pulling, and carrying light to heavy objects (up to 50 lbs.).

Working Conditions:
Work is performed in a normal warehouse environment where there are physical discomforts associated with changed in weather or discomforts associated with noise, dust, dirt, and the like.
