What is a solution architect?

Solution Architects are professionals who design and oversee the implementation of complex software or technology solutions within an organization. They bridge the gap between business needs and technical requirements by creating high-level architectural designs and ensuring that the final product meets both functional and non-functional requirements. Solution Architects work closely with stakeholders, developers, and project managers to guide the project from conception to completion, ensuring scalability, security, and efficiency.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a solution architect?

To thrive as a Solutions Architect, you need deep expertise in systems design, software development, and IT architecture, often supported by a degree in computer science or a related field. Familiarity with cloud platforms (such as AWS, Azure, or Google Cloud), architecture frameworks, and relevant certifications (e.g., AWS Certified Solutions Architect) is typically required. Strong problem-solving, communication, and stakeholder management skills are essential for translating business needs into technical solutions. These skills ensure effective design, implementation, and alignment of technology solutions with organizational goals.

How does a solution architect typically collaborate with other teams during a project lifecycle?

Solution Architects work closely with cross-functional teams, including developers, project managers, and business stakeholders, to ensure that technical solutions align with business objectives. Throughout the project lifecycle, they facilitate communication between technical and non-technical teams, translate business requirements into technical specifications, and guide the architectural direction. Frequent collaboration ensures that any challenges are addressed proactively and that the final solution is scalable and maintainable. This role requires excellent interpersonal skills and adaptability to work effectively with diverse teams.

Job description
The team
At Hitachi Vantara, our Cloud Architecture team is at the center of the company's global digital transformation, delivering secure, scalable, and resilient cloud platforms that support both enterprise IT and product development. Operating across AWS as our primary cloud and GCP as a strategic secondary platform, we design and govern multi-cloud environments that enable innovation while maintaining strong security, networking, and operational standards. As our cloud footprint continues to grow, we are expanding the team with experienced architects who can help shape our cloud strategy, modernize infrastructure, and support emerging technologies including AI and machine learning.

The role includes ownership of core cloud services, connectivity between cloud and on-premises environments, workload migration strategies, disaster recovery architecture, and multi-cloud networking. You will also collaborate with business and product teams to enable AI/ML initiatives by designing cloud environments optimized for training, inference, and data platforms. In addition, you will mentor engineers and architects, helping drive technical excellence and cloud adoption across the organization.
What you'll bring
  • 10+ years of enterprise IT experience with significant hands-on AWS architecture and engineering expertise
  • Deep knowledge of AWS Organizations, Landing Zone, Control Tower, Service Catalog, and Service Control Policies
  • Strong experience designing and operating cloud networking solutions including Transit Gateway, Shared VPCs, hybrid connectivity, and multi-cloud architectures
  • Expertise in AWS security, governance, identity, and cost management best practices
  • Experience with Kubernetes and container platforms, including EKS, ECS, and GKE
  • Knowledge of serverless and event-driven architectures using services such as API Gateway and Lambda
  • Hands-on experience with GCP, including Organization design, IAM, Shared VPCs, networking, and core platform services
  • Experience supporting AI/ML cloud platforms and services such as SageMaker, Bedrock, Vertex AI, or similar technologies
  • AWS Certified Solutions Architect - Professional certification (current); GCP Professional Cloud Architect certification is highly desirable
  • Strong communication, stakeholder management, and mentoring capabilities within globally distributed teams
