What is a solution engineer?

A Solution Engineer is a professional who bridges the gap between technical and business teams by designing, presenting, and implementing technology solutions tailored to a client's needs. They work closely with sales teams to understand customer requirements and demonstrate how products or services can solve specific business problems. Solution Engineers often provide technical expertise during the pre-sales process, create proof-of-concepts, and ensure smooth integration of solutions. Their role requires strong communication, problem-solving, and technical skills to translate complex concepts into practical solutions.

How do solution engineers typically collaborate with sales and technical teams during the sales cycle?

Solution Engineers play a pivotal role in bridging the gap between sales and technical teams. During the sales cycle, they often work closely with sales representatives to understand client requirements, deliver technical presentations, and tailor demonstrations to showcase how a product meets specific business needs. They also engage with product and engineering teams to address feasibility concerns, customize solutions, and ensure proposed implementations are technically sound. This collaborative environment requires strong communication skills, adaptability, and the ability to translate complex technical concepts for both technical and non-technical stakeholders.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a solution engineer, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Solution Engineer, you need a strong technical background in software engineering or IT, analytical problem-solving abilities, and typically a relevant degree or certifications. Familiarity with CRM systems, cloud platforms, APIs, and tools like Salesforce or AWS is often required. Excellent communication, presentation, and collaboration skills help you effectively translate client needs into technical solutions. These competencies ensure that you can design, demonstrate, and implement solutions that meet client requirements and drive business success.

About VeilSun

VeilSun delivers value-based innovation for AI and Low-Code driven custom applications. We provide immediate value for complex solutions while building for long-term scalability. We begin with a customized Technology Blueprint to fully understand our customers’ business objectives, then design and deliver applications that drive quick ROI and strong user engagement.

We specialize in QuickBase development and consulting, cloud integration, and leading low-code/no-code platforms, including Mendix and Microsoft Power Apps. We’ve helped hundreds of growing companies achieve their business goals through a scalable technology vision.

Summary

As a Solution Engineer at VeilSun, you partner with sales and clients to translate business needs into clear, executable technical solutions. Acting as both a consultant and solution architect, you lead discovery and blueprint sessions, shape client vision, and design scalable solutions across low-code platforms, integrations, and AI.

You balance client goals, deal competitiveness, and delivery feasibility—ensuring solutions are well-scoped, achievable, and positioned for long-term success.

Purpose of Position

Own the pre-sales solutioning process by defining clear, feasible, and high-impact solutions. Ensure alignment between client needs, technical architecture, and delivery expectations to set projects up for success.

Business Outcomes

You will be measured on:

  • Quality and clarity of solution design, scope, and estimates; reduction in scope gaps, rework, and change orders
  • Effectiveness of discovery in uncovering true client needs; solutions are clearly defined, realistic, and aligned to client goals
  • Alignment to delivery feasibility and architectural standards
  • Seamless, well-defined handoff to delivery teams
  • Deals are structured for both winability and successful delivery
  • Risks are identified early and managed proactively
  • Clients feel informed, confident, and guided—not sold to
  • Contribution to win rates
  • Future state delivery margin success based on estimate, risk, assumptions, and blueprint quality
What You Will Lead
  • Lead discovery and blueprint sessions to understand business processes, challenges, and goals
  • Design and scope solutions across low-code platforms (e.g., Quickbase, Mendix), APIs, and AI
  • Define solution architecture, requirements, assumptions, timelines, and level-of-effort estimates
  • Guide tradeoff decisions across scope, cost, timeline, and complexity
  • Structure engagements to align with budgets while enabling phased, long-term value
  • Identify risks, dependencies, and gaps early and address proactively
  • Partner with sales to shape opportunities, articulate value, and support deal strategy
  • Evaluate client ecosystems and position solutions within broader business context
  • Support client conversations, presentations, and technical discussions
  • Continuously improve solutioning frameworks, estimation practices, and reusable assets
  • Stay current on platforms, emerging technologies, and industry trends
  • Represent VeilSun at events and conferences to support pipeline growth
Decision Authority
  • Define solution approach, architecture, and scope
  • Shape deal structure, including assumptions
  • Make tradeoffs to balance feasibility, cost, and client goals
  • Challenge client requests that introduce risk or misalignment
  • Recommend whether to pursue, reshape, or decline opportunities
  • Apply appropriate depth in pre-sales solutioning—defining clear assumptions, boundaries, and scope to create accurate estimates without over- or under-engineering prior to delivery
Behaviors and Attributes
  • Highly consultative, client-focused mindset
  • Strong balance of business acumen and technical expertise
  • Clear, confident communicator across technical and non-technical audiences
  • Skilled at leading discovery and navigating ambiguity
  • Detail-oriented in scope, assumptions, and estimation
  • Collaborative across sales and delivery teams
  • Proactive, curious, and adaptable
  • Willingness to escape risks that may impact delivery success
  • Willingness to challenge assumptions and guide clients to the right solution
  • Ability to balance winability with execution ability - win the deal; don't break delivery
Failure Patterns We Avoid
  • Overpromising or underscoping
  • Prioritizing wins over delivery success
  • Unclear requirements
  • Weak estimates or missed dependencies
  • Poor collaboration or handoffs
  • Failure to challenge risky assumptions
Preferred Capabilities
  • 3–6+ years in solution engineering, consulting, or similar client-facing technical roles
  • Experience with low-code platforms (Quickbase, Mendix, Power Apps, etc.)
  • Strong understanding of system architecture, business processes, and integrations
  • Experience leading discovery and defining requirements and SOWs
  • Familiarity with API and AI solution design
  • Working knowledge of Procore preferred
  • Ability to scope work and develop accurate estimates
  • Experience partnering with sales on deal strategy
  • Understanding of delivery methodologies (Agile, Waterfall)
