Both roles require similar certifications and work in overlapping environments, but their primary responsibilities differ in scope and focus.

What are some common challenges Solution Architect Associates face when transitioning from technical roles, and how can they overcome them?

Solution Architect Associates often transition from hands-on technical positions, so adapting to a role that requires strong communication and stakeholder management can be challenging. Balancing technical depth with the ability to convey complex solutions to non-technical audiences is essential. To overcome these challenges, it's helpful to practice active listening, seek mentorship from experienced solution architects, and participate in cross-functional meetings to build confidence in presenting and defending architectural decisions. Continual learning about business priorities and focusing on collaborative problem-solving will also aid in a successful transition.

What is a Solution Architect Associate?

A Solution Architect Associate is an IT professional who assists in designing and implementing technical solutions that meet business requirements. They work under the guidance of more senior solution architects to analyze client needs, select appropriate technologies, and ensure that systems are scalable, reliable, and secure. Their role often involves collaborating with developers, engineers, and stakeholders to translate business objectives into technical architectures. Solution Architect Associates typically have a foundational understanding of cloud services, software development, and IT infrastructure. This position is a common starting point for those aiming to become full Solution Architects.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a Solution Architect Associate, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Solution Architect Associate, you need a solid understanding of systems design, cloud computing, and software development, often backed by a relevant degree and foundational certifications like AWS Certified Solutions Architect – Associate. Familiarity with cloud platforms (AWS, Azure, or Google Cloud), architecture frameworks, and tools such as UML or infrastructure-as-code solutions is typical. Strong problem-solving abilities, effective communication, and collaboration skills help translate business requirements into technical solutions. These skills ensure the delivery of scalable, secure, and efficient architectures that meet organizational needs.

Job description

Overview

Matrix HR is partnering with a leading North American Energy Infrastructure client company to recruit an experienced SAP Technical Cloud Architect to support its flagship SAP Plus transformation program.

This is an exciting opportunity to join a large-scale SAP modernization initiative as the organization transitions from SAP ECC to SAP S/4HANA RISE Private Cloud Edition. As a senior technical individual contributor, you'll play a critical role in designing the hybrid AWS and SAP cloud architecture that will support one of the organization's most strategic enterprise programs.

Role Summary

Reporting to the SAP Plus Program leadership team, the SAP Technical Cloud Architect will lead the detailed design of the hybrid cloud architecture supporting SAP S/4HANA RISE Private Cloud Edition and the broader SAP cloud ecosystem.

Working closely with Enterprise, Solution, and Security Architects, you'll translate high-level architecture into detailed, implementation-ready technical designs that enable successful delivery by System Integrators and internal technical teams.

This role combines deep AWS infrastructure expertise with SAP cloud platform architecture, helping deliver secure, scalable, resilient, and high-performing hybrid cloud solutions across AWS, SAP Business Technology Platform (BTP), SAP RISE, and integrated enterprise applications.

Your Impact

Cloud Architecture & Solution Design

  • Design the hybrid AWS and SAP cloud architecture supporting the SAP S/4HANA RISE transformation.
  • Translate high-level solution architecture into detailed, build-ready technical designs for implementation teams.
  • Produce architecture blueprints, infrastructure diagrams, connectivity designs, implementation runbooks, Architecture Decision Records (ADRs), and operational documentation.
  • Review and validate System Integrator designs to ensure alignment with enterprise architecture standards and best practices.
  • Design highly available, scalable, and resilient cloud environments supporting long-term operational success.
Infrastructure, Integration & Security
  • Design AWS networking solutions including VPCs, Transit Gateway, Direct Connect, VPNs, DNS, routing, security groups, certificates, and identity federation.
  • Architect secure connectivity across SAP cloud platforms, AWS environments, enterprise applications, and SaaS solutions.
  • Partner with Security Architects to implement identity, trust, encryption, certificate management, and network security strategies.
  • Support monitoring, logging, observability, disaster recovery, and operational readiness across the hybrid cloud environment.
  • Promote Infrastructure-as-Code (IaC) and automation to improve consistency, scalability, and operational efficiency.
Technical Leadership
  • Provide technical leadership across architects, engineers, System Integrators, and technology partners throughout the design and implementation lifecycle.
  • Break architecture into implementation-ready work packages that support successful project delivery.
  • Coordinate technical dependencies across cloud infrastructure, networking, security, SAP platforms, and integration teams.
  • Identify and remove technical roadblocks while driving alignment with enterprise architecture standards.
  • Continuously improve cloud performance, scalability, resiliency, and cost optimization by incorporating industry best practices.
What You Bring
  • Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Information Technology, Engineering, or a related discipline (or equivalent experience).
  • 8+ years of experience designing and implementing enterprise AWS and hybrid cloud environments.
  • Extensive experience with AWS infrastructure, networking, cloud security, identity management, DNS, certificates, encryption, Linux, and hybrid cloud architecture.
  • Experience designing secure, scalable cloud solutions for enterprise transformation or ERP modernization programs.
  • Strong understanding of AWS networking, hybrid connectivity, cloud governance, and architecture best practices.
  • Experience producing detailed technical architecture documentation, implementation-ready designs, and governance artefacts.
  • Excellent communication and stakeholder management skills with the ability to collaborate across technical and business teams.
  • Legally authorized to work in Canada without employer sponsorship.
Preferred Qualifications
  • Experience with SAP S/4HANA RISE Private Cloud Edition or SAP ECC-to-S/4HANA transformation programs.
  • Experience with SAP cloud technologies including SAP Business Technology Platform (BTP), SAP Cloud Platform (SCP), IAS, IPS, Integration Suite, Cloud ALM, Datasphere, SAP Build, Ariba, Signavio, Joule, and related SAP cloud services.
  • AWS Certified Solutions Architect (Associate or Professional).
  • Experience within the energy, utilities, financial services, or other regulated industries.
  • Experience with Infrastructure-as-Code (IaC), cloud automation, and container technologies.
Location & Work Schedule

This is a full-time, fixed-term contract anticipated to begin in July 2026 and continue through March 2027. As the SAP Plus Program progresses from the Design phase into Build, a contract extension may be possible; however, it is not known at this time whether an extension will be required.

Local candidates will work a hybrid schedule from the client's Calgary office (Monday, Tuesday, and Thursday onsite; Wednesday and Friday remote). Remote candidates located within Canada or U.S. time zones are also encouraged to apply and should be available to travel to Calgary approximately once every few months for project meetings.

The standard work schedule is Monday to Friday, 40 hours per week, with overtime not anticipated.

Apply Today

If you're passionate about designing enterprise-scale cloud architecture and want to play a key role in one of North America's most significant SAP transformation programs, we'd love to hear from you.

Applications will be reviewed and submitted to our client as they are received. As this is a priority search, we encourage interested candidates to apply as soon as possible, as the position may be filled and closed without notice.
