Solidworks information

What skills and qualifications are needed to thrive as a Solidworks?

To thrive in a SolidWorks role, you need strong proficiency in 3D CAD modeling, mechanical design principles, and engineering documentation, usually supported by a degree in mechanical engineering or a related field. Familiarity with SolidWorks software, CAD data management tools, and relevant certifications like Certified SolidWorks Associate (CSWA) or Professional (CSWP) are highly valued. Strong problem-solving ability, attention to detail, and effective communication skills help set candidates apart. These skills enable efficient product development, clear technical documentation, and successful collaboration on engineering projects.

What does a Solidworks do?

Professionals using SolidWorks spend much of their day creating and editing 3D models, generating detailed engineering drawings, and collaborating with team members on design iterations. They often review project requirements, participate in design reviews, and make adjustments based on feedback from engineers or clients. Problem-solving and troubleshooting design issues are common tasks, especially when preparing models for prototyping or manufacturing. Regular communication with cross-functional teams ensures that designs meet functionality, manufacturability, and quality standards.

What is a Solidworks?

A SolidWorks job typically involves using the SolidWorks CAD (computer-aided design) software to create, modify, and analyze 3D models and engineering drawings. Professionals in this role may work in industries like manufacturing, automotive, aerospace, or product design. Responsibilities can include designing mechanical components, creating technical documentation, and collaborating with engineers and production teams. SolidWorks jobs may range from entry-level drafting positions to advanced engineering roles requiring extensive experience. Proficiency in SolidWorks and a strong understanding of mechanical design principles are often essential for success in this field.

micro1 is the leading AI data lab for training frontier models and evaluating AI agents. Experts contribute their diverse subject matter knowledge across domains such as finance, healthcare, STEM engineering, and more. micro1 transforms that real-world expertise into high-quality training data, evaluations, and feedback loops that improve how AI systems learn, reason, and perform.

Our platform identifies and vets top talent through an AI recruiter, enabling high-quality expert contributions at scale. We aim to enable 1 billion people to do meaningful work by applying their expertise to AI. As our global expert network grows, micro1 is building the human intelligence layer for frontier AI.

Role Title: SolidWorks Specialist

Role Type: Contractor

Location: Remote

micro1 is engaging SolidWorks Specialists to contribute to a high-impact mechanical design project for an innovative customer. In this role, you'll apply your expertise to help train next-generation AI systems. Your work will shape how models learn, reason, and perform through high-quality, real-world input. No prior experience in AI is required โ€” your domain knowledge is what matters.

Scope of Work

  1. Create fully-parametric 3D CAD models of mechanical parts and assemblies based on written briefs, focusing on robust feature trees and precise constraints.
  2. Edit and update existing parametric models to meet new technical requirements, ensuring complete documentation of changes.
  3. Audit and review models for dimensional accuracy, proper tolerance application, and manufacturability across various processes.
  4. Apply deep knowledge of DFM principles for injection molding, sheet metal, CNC machining, and casting/forging throughout modeling tasks.
  5. Translate design intent and requirements into clear, structured CAD data suitable for AI model training.
  6. Communicate effectively with project coordinators and fellow contributors through detailed written reports and verbal updates.

Preferred Qualifications

  1. 4+ years of hands-on parametric CAD experience (SolidWorks, FreeCAD, Fusion 360, or Autodesk Inventor) for editing, and 10+ years for creation of complex assemblies.
  2. Practical application of GD&T per ASME Y14.5 or equivalent standards in real-world manufacturing contexts.
  3. Track record in supporting at least two or more manufacturing methods: injection molding, sheet metal, CNC, or casting/forging.
  4. Current, active involvement in mechanical/industrial CAD modeling.
  5. Strong written and verbal communication skills, with emphasis on clear, concise project documentation.
  6. Reverse engineering capability (e.g., scan-to-CAD, point cloud conversions) considered a significant advantage.
  7. Experience with assembly-level modeling and, optionally, automating CAD workflows via scripting (Python, iLogic, VBA, etc.).
