What is a Solidworks?

A SolidWorks job typically involves using the SolidWorks CAD (computer-aided design) software to create, modify, and analyze 3D models and engineering drawings. Professionals in this role may work in industries like manufacturing, automotive, aerospace, or product design. Responsibilities can include designing mechanical components, creating technical documentation, and collaborating with engineers and production teams. SolidWorks jobs may range from entry-level drafting positions to advanced engineering roles requiring extensive experience. Proficiency in SolidWorks and a strong understanding of mechanical design principles are often essential for success in this field.

What does a Solidworks do?

Professionals using SolidWorks spend much of their day creating and editing 3D models, generating detailed engineering drawings, and collaborating with team members on design iterations. They often review project requirements, participate in design reviews, and make adjustments based on feedback from engineers or clients. Problem-solving and troubleshooting design issues are common tasks, especially when preparing models for prototyping or manufacturing. Regular communication with cross-functional teams ensures that designs meet functionality, manufacturability, and quality standards.

What skills and qualifications are needed to thrive as a Solidworks?

To thrive in a SolidWorks role, you need strong proficiency in 3D CAD modeling, mechanical design principles, and engineering documentation, usually supported by a degree in mechanical engineering or a related field. Familiarity with SolidWorks software, CAD data management tools, and relevant certifications like Certified SolidWorks Associate (CSWA) or Professional (CSWP) are highly valued. Strong problem-solving ability, attention to detail, and effective communication skills help set candidates apart. These skills enable efficient product development, clear technical documentation, and successful collaboration on engineering projects.

Is SolidWorks a good career?

SolidWorks is a widely used CAD software for mechanical design, and careers involving SolidWorks typically include roles such as mechanical engineer, design engineer, or CAD technician. These positions often require technical skills, certifications, and familiarity with engineering principles, offering opportunities in manufacturing, product development, and engineering firms.

Is Solidworks in demand?

SolidWorks is a widely used CAD software in engineering, manufacturing, and product design, and demand for professionals skilled in it remains strong due to ongoing needs for 3D modeling and mechanical design. Job opportunities often require proficiency in SolidWorks, along with related skills such as engineering principles and certification, making it a valuable skill in technical fields.

What professions use SolidWorks?

SolidWorks is widely used by mechanical engineers, product designers, CAD technicians, and industrial designers to create detailed 3D models and technical drawings. Professionals in manufacturing, aerospace, automotive, and consumer product development often rely on SolidWorks for designing and prototyping parts and assemblies. Proficiency in the software is valuable for roles requiring precise engineering and design skills.

  • Hours: Part-time, nominally 20 hours per week, with the potential to increase in hours and/or convert to a full-time position based on workload.
  • Work Environment: Hybrid, with an expectation to work from our office 23 days per week

Questor is looking for an intermediate Mechanical Drafter to support the design and manufacturing of our existing incinerator product line and the development of our new product lines. Must have strong drawing skills in SolidWorks, along with basic knowledge and use of AutoCAD. You will produce and maintain the manufacturing, assembly, and fabrication drawings that bring our equipment to life, working closely with our engineering team in a collaborative setting. This is a contract position, and the role reports to the Director of Engineering.

Success in this role is defined as someone who partners effectively with the Engineering and Operations Team, is detail-oriented, organized, effective at prioritizing, able to manage multiple deliverables, and produces accurate, high-quality drawings with a high level of professionalism and confidentiality, with a desire to continually learn, grow, and contribute to the team.

Your Unique Skills

  • Strong, hands-on SolidWorks skills; you produce clean, accurate, and well-organized 3D models and 2D drawings, and you take pride in the craft of drafting.
  • Experience with AutoCAD in creating P&IDs and wiring diagrams.
  • Detail-oriented and pragmatic; you are able to independently prioritize, organize, and manage multiple drawing packages and revisions.
  • A collaborative team player with a can-do attitude that holds themselves to the high standards of quality and accountability Questor expects.

  • Comfortable working independently within a part-time, hybrid arrangement while staying closely coordinated with the engineering team.
  • Professional communicator who exercises discretion with confidential information.

What You'll Do

  • Produce manufacturing, fabrication, and assembly drawings in SolidWorks based on engineering direction, sketches, and markups.
  • Create and maintain 3D models, 2D detail and general arrangement drawings, and bills of material (BOMs) for incinerators and related equipment.
  • Revise and update existing models and drawings to reflect design changes, redlines, and continuous-improvement updates.
  • Apply appropriate dimensioning, tolerancing (GD&T & ASME), and drafting standards so drawings are clear and ready for fabrication.
  • Manage drawing files, revision control, and documentation in an organized and consistent manner.
  • Collaborate with the Engineering, Operations, and Manufacturing teams to ensure drawings are accurate and practical to build, assemble, and install.
  • Support the preparation of equipment specifications, datasheets, and fabrication packages.
  • Incorporate feedback from design reviews and drawing checks and flag discrepancies or constructability concerns for engineering review.
