What is SolidWorks teaching?

SolidWorks teaching involves instructing students or professionals on how to use SolidWorks, a powerful computer-aided design (CAD) software used for designing 3D models and engineering drawings. SolidWorks teachers guide learners through the software’s interface, tools, and features, helping them create and modify designs for various engineering and manufacturing applications. Lessons may cover topics like part modeling, assemblies, simulations, and technical drawings, and can be tailored for beginners or advanced users. Effective SolidWorks teaching combines technical knowledge with instructional skills to ensure students gain practical, hands-on experience.

What are some common challenges SolidWorks instructors face when teaching students with varying levels of CAD experience?

SolidWorks instructors often encounter classes where students have a wide range of CAD backgrounds, from complete beginners to those with prior experience. Balancing lesson pacing to ensure beginners grasp foundational concepts, while keeping advanced learners engaged, can be challenging. Instructors may need to provide differentiated assignments, additional resources, and individualized support to address varying skill levels. Collaborating with other instructors and utilizing peer learning within the class can help foster a supportive learning environment for everyone.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a SolidWorks instructor, and why are they important?

To thrive as a SolidWorks Instructor, you need advanced proficiency in SolidWorks CAD software, a background in engineering or design, and often relevant certifications like Certified SOLIDWORKS Professional (CSWP) or Expert (CSWE). Familiarity with classroom technology, simulation tools, and online learning platforms is crucial for delivering effective instruction. Strong communication, patience, and the ability to simplify complex concepts are standout soft skills in this teaching role. These abilities ensure students gain practical, industry-relevant skills and foster an engaging, supportive learning environment.

What is the difference between Solidworks Teaching vs Solidworks Design Engineer?

Great Bay Community College, Business & Training Center

Position Type: Contract faculty Credits: Non-credit Reports To: Director of Workforce Development

CCSNH has established employer status within the New England states (Maine, New Hampshire, Vermont, Massachusetts, Connecticut, and Rhode Island). In compliance with CCSNH policies and state regulations, eligibility for employment within CCSNH and its institutions requires residency within a New England state.

Position Summary

Great Bay Community College seeks a qualified instructor to teach three non-credit courses: NCBM 105-Part Design in Solidworks; NCBM 106-Assemblies in Solidworks; NCBM107-Design Communication in Solidworks that provide a comprehensive introduction to SolidWorks CAD software for engineering, product design, and manufacturing applications. The instructor will guide students through 3D modeling, part design, assembly creation, technical drawing, and design-for-manufacturing principles, preparing them for careers in automated manufacturing, engineering design, and related fields.

Scope of Work

The instructor will be responsible for:

  • Delivering instruction across all course topics, including:
    • SolidWorks interface, tools, and workflows
    • Sketching fundamentals (lines, circles, arcs, splines) and applying constraints/dimensions
    • 3D part modeling (extrusion, revolution, lofting, adding/subtracting material)
    • Advanced part modeling and design intent in parametric modeling
    • Assembly modeling, component relationships, and mates
    • 2D technical drawing generation with correct views, dimensions, and annotations
    • Exploded views and assembly instructions for manufacturing
    • Introductory rendering, animation, and motion analysis
    • Basic tolerances and fits in mechanical design
    • Use of SolidWorks design libraries and templates
    • File export for 3D printing, CNC machining, and other manufacturing processes
  • Planning and leading a blend of lecture/discussion and hands-on lab activities (2 theory hours + 3 lab hours weekly)
  • Designing and facilitating project-based assignments and design review sessions
  • Developing and administering reading activities with quizzes, lab reports, and (optionally) practical exams
  • Providing timely, constructive feedback on student design work
  • Evaluating student progress against the 15 stated course objectives (e.g., sketching mastery, assembly creation, design intent, tolerances/fits, file export for manufacturing)
  • Maintaining course records, grades, and attendance in accordance with college policy
  • Ensuring lab safety procedures are followed, particularly where 3D printers or shop equipment are used

Minimum Qualifications

  • Associate's degree in Mechanical Engineering, Manufacturing Technology, Engineering Design, Drafting, or a closely related field (Bachelor's degree preferred)
  • Demonstrated proficiency in SolidWorks, including part modeling, assembly design, and 2D drawing creation
  • Professional experience applying CAD/SolidWorks in an engineering, manufacturing, product design, or drafting setting
  • Working knowledge of 3D printing technologies and design-for-additive-manufacturing principles
  • Ability to teach both foundational and intermediate CAD concepts to students with little to no prior experience
  • Strong communication and classroom/lab facilitation skills
  • Prior teaching, training, or mentoring experience preferred (college-level instruction a plus)
  • SolidWorks certification (e.g., CSWA, CSWP) preferred but not required

Application Process

  1. Submit an application online including:
    • Cover letter describing relevant SolidWorks/CAD and teaching or training experience
    • Current resume or CV
    • Contact information for two to three professional references
    • Optional: portfolio or samples of CAD/design work (models, drawings, or projects)
