Solidworks Modeling information

What is SolidWorks modeling?

SolidWorks modeling refers to the process of creating 3D digital representations of objects using SolidWorks, a computer-aided design (CAD) software. This software is widely used by engineers and designers to build detailed models for prototyping, manufacturing, and product development. SolidWorks modeling includes creating parts, assemblies, and technical drawings, helping users visualize and test their designs before physical production. The software supports parametric modeling, which allows easy modification and optimization of designs.

How does a SolidWorks modeling specialist typically collaborate with engineers and other team members during a product development project?

SolidWorks Modeling specialists work closely with engineers, designers, and sometimes manufacturing teams throughout the product development process. They often participate in design reviews, interpret technical sketches or specifications, and translate those into detailed 3D models and assemblies using SolidWorks. Collaboration tools within SolidWorks, such as file sharing and revision management, are frequently used to ensure seamless communication and version control. Regular meetings and feedback sessions help align the modeling work with engineering requirements and project timelines, making teamwork and clear communication essential for success in this role.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a SolidWorks modeler, and why are they important?

To thrive as a SolidWorks Modeler, you need expertise in 3D CAD modeling, mechanical design principles, and a relevant engineering or technical background. Proficiency with SolidWorks software, familiarity with product data management (PDM) systems, and sometimes CSWA or CSWP certifications are typically required. Strong attention to detail, problem-solving skills, and effective communication help ensure accurate models and smooth collaboration with engineering teams. These skills are crucial for producing precise, manufacturable designs and supporting efficient product development cycles.

What is the difference between Solidworks Modeling vs Mechanical Drafter?

AspectSolidworks ModelingMechanical Drafter
CredentialsCAD certifications, engineering backgroundDrafting certifications, technical training
Work EnvironmentDesign offices, engineering firmsManufacturing plants, design departments
Industry UsageProduct design, engineering projectsTechnical drawings, manufacturing plans
Primary FocusCreating 3D models and assembliesPreparing detailed 2D drawings

Solidworks Modeling involves creating detailed 3D models and assemblies for product development, often requiring engineering knowledge. Mechanical Drafters focus on producing precise 2D drawings for manufacturing, typically with less emphasis on 3D modeling. Both roles are essential in the design-to-manufacturing process but differ in scope and technical requirements.

How much money can you make with Solidworks Modeling?

Solidworks Modeling professionals typically earn between $50,000 and $80,000 annually, depending on experience, location, and industry. Advanced skills, certifications, and experience in CAD design can lead to higher salaries and opportunities for advancement.

Is SolidWorks a good career?

SolidWorks modeling is a valuable skill in engineering, product design, and manufacturing industries, with demand for skilled CAD professionals consistently strong. Careers in SolidWorks often require proficiency in 3D modeling, technical drawing, and sometimes certifications like CSWA or CSWP. The role offers opportunities for specialization, project work, and advancement in technical fields.

Job description

Leidos is seeking a highly skilled Modeling Engineer to support critical national security missions for the Defense Threat Reduction Agency and the Defense Intelligence Agency. This position focuses on advanced structural modeling of complex facilities, critical infrastructure, and target environments to enable Countering Weapons of Mass Destruction and Hard and Deeply Buried Target vulnerability and defeat assessments.

The ideal candidate will bridge the gap between field-captured spatial data and high-fidelity analytical models. In this role, you will lead 3D Building Information Modeling efforts, manage cross-domain data movement between unclassified and classified networks, and perform field surveys using LiDAR and point cloud technologies.

Key Responsibilities

Structural and Infrastructure Modeling

  • Build detailed, high-fidelity 3D BIM models of complex underground, hardened, and above-ground facilities, including structural framing, foundations, and critical utilities.

  • Map complex system-of-systems connectivity, including structural dependencies, HVAC/MEP systems, communications, power, and operational equipment.

  • Convert technical, operational, and intelligence data into precise spatial models to support blast, impact, structural integrity, and physical vulnerability simulations.

Reality Capture and Field Surveying

  • Execute field data collection using terrestrial, aerial, and mobile LiDAR systems, handheld scanners, and photogrammetry tools.

  • Process, clean, stitch, and georeference large point cloud datasets into actionable BIM environments using scan-to-BIM workflows.

  • Participate in CONUS and OCONUS site surveys in dynamic environments to capture ground-truth physical characteristics.

Cross-Domain Data Handling and Architecture

  • Manage model development across multiple classification levels, including Unclassified, Secret, and TS/SCI environments.

  • Prepare, filter, and validate spatial and geometric data for high-to-low and low-to-high cross-domain transfer protocols.

  • Maintain strict model security controls, ensuring attribution and metadata conform to Intelligence Community classification guidelines.

Mission Support and Threat Assessment

  • Collaborate with weapon effects analysts, structural dynamicists, and intelligence specialists to support target vulnerability and defeat assessment pipelines.

  • Quantify structural load paths, material properties, and failure modes under extreme loading conditions.

  • Serve as a subject matter expert within the technical domain area.

  • Deliver technical briefs, spatial analytical products, and interactive 3D visualizations to key Department of Defense decision-makers.

Required Qualifications

  • Candidates for consideration must possess an in-scope and active TS/SCI Polygraph clearance and the ability/willingness to maintain this clearance while holding this position. U.S. Citizenship is required.

  • In-depth understanding of technical principles, theories, concepts, and their application across a range of programs.

  • Typically requires a bachelor's degree in civil engineering, structural engineering, mechanical engineering, geographic information systems, or a related STEM field, and 12-15 years of relevant prior experience. A master's degree is preferred.

  • Relevant work experience includes structural or systems modeling, BIM workflows, and facility spatial analysis.

  • Additional relevant experience may be considered in lieu of a degree.

  • Proficiency with Autodesk Revit, Navisworks, AutoCAD, SolidWorks, Bentley Systems, including OpenBuildings or MicroStation, or other applicable modeling software.

  • Hands-on experience with point cloud processing software, such as Autodesk ReCap, Leica Cyclone, FARO Scene, or CloudCompare.

  • Direct experience conducting LiDAR scanning and photogrammetric site collections.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Prior experience supporting DTRA, DIA, U.S. Strategic Command, or U.S. Special Operations Command counter-threat missions.

  • Familiarity with Hard and Deeply Buried Target design concepts, underground engineering, or hardened structures.

  • Background with cross-domain transfer platforms, including CDS tools, guard solutions, and data sanitization standard operating procedures.

  • Understanding of finite element analysis or computational fluid dynamics modeling integration, such as Ansys or LS-DYNA.

  • Knowledge of GIS platforms, including ArcGIS Pro, and CAD-to-GIS integration workflows.
