How much do solidworks fixture design jobs pay per hour?

As of Sep 10, 2026, the average hourly pay for solidworks fixture design in the United States is $29.96, according to ZipRecruiter salary data. Most workers in this role earn between $24.04 and $34.13 per hour, depending on experience, location, and employer.

What is SolidWorks fixture design?

SolidWorks fixture design involves using the SolidWorks CAD software to create fixtures—specialized tools or devices used to securely hold, support, or locate parts during manufacturing processes such as machining, assembly, or inspection. Designers use SolidWorks to model and simulate these fixtures, ensuring they meet requirements for precision, stability, and manufacturability. This process helps improve efficiency, safety, and product quality in a production environment.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a SolidWorks fixture designer?

To excel as a SolidWorks Fixture Designer, you need a strong background in mechanical engineering principles, 3D CAD modeling, and fixture design, often supported by a relevant engineering degree or technical certification. Proficiency with SolidWorks software and familiarity with GD&T, manufacturing processes, and PLM systems are typically required. Attention to detail, problem-solving abilities, and effective communication are valuable soft skills in this role. These skills ensure the creation of accurate, efficient fixture designs that meet manufacturing needs and enable smooth collaboration across teams.

What are some common challenges faced by SolidWorks fixture design engineers when collaborating with manufacturing teams?

Solidworks Fixture Design engineers often encounter challenges in translating digital designs into practical, manufacturable fixtures. Communication gaps can arise when conveying complex design intent or tolerances to manufacturing teams, especially if there are last-minute design changes or tight production timelines. Additionally, balancing cost-effectiveness with robust functionality requires frequent feedback and iteration between engineering and manufacturing. Developing strong cross-functional relationships and clear documentation can help address these challenges and ensure a smoother workflow.

What is the difference between Solidworks Fixture Design vs Solidworks Mechanical Design?

AspectSolidworks Fixture DesignSolidworks Mechanical Design
Primary FocusCreating fixtures and tooling for manufacturing processesDesigning mechanical components and assemblies
Skills & CertificationsCAD proficiency, manufacturing knowledge, fixture design experienceCAD skills, mechanical engineering background, product design expertise
