How much do solidworks detailer jobs pay per hour?

As of Aug 20, 2026, the average hourly pay for solidworks detailer in the United States is $16.45, according to ZipRecruiter salary data. Most workers in this role earn between $14.42 and $17.31 per hour, depending on experience, location, and employer.

What is a Solidworks detailer?

Solidworks Detailers are professionals who use Solidworks, a computer-aided design (CAD) software, to create detailed technical drawings and 3D models for manufacturing and engineering purposes. They interpret engineering sketches, specifications, and layouts to produce precise representations of parts, assemblies, and systems. Their work ensures that designs are accurately communicated to manufacturers and fabricators, helping to streamline production and reduce errors. Solidworks Detailers often collaborate with engineers and other team members to update and improve designs as needed.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a Solidworks detailer, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Solidworks Detailer, you need a solid understanding of mechanical drafting, engineering principles, and proficiency in SolidWorks CAD software, typically supported by a technical diploma or associate degree in drafting or engineering technology. Expertise in SolidWorks, familiarity with industry standards (such as ASME or ISO), and sometimes certification like Certified SOLIDWORKS Associate (CSWA) are highly valued. Attention to detail, problem-solving skills, and effective communication are crucial for translating design concepts into accurate technical drawings and collaborating with engineers. These abilities ensure precise documentation, minimize errors, and facilitate efficient production or manufacturing processes.

What are some common challenges faced by Solidworks detailers when working on complex assemblies, and how can they be managed?

Solidworks Detailers often encounter challenges such as managing large and intricate assemblies, ensuring all components fit together correctly, and maintaining up-to-date documentation as designs evolve. Effective communication with engineers and project managers is critical to clarify specifications and resolve design conflicts early. Utilizing Solidworks' configuration and revision control features can help streamline updates and prevent errors. Regular collaboration with the broader design and fabrication team ensures that the final drawings meet both technical and manufacturing requirements.

What is the difference between Solidworks Detailer vs Mechanical Drafter?

AspectSolidworks DetailerMechanical Drafter
CredentialsOften requires CAD certification, Solidworks trainingTypically has a drafting or engineering technology degree
Work EnvironmentDesign offices, manufacturing plantsEngineering firms, manufacturing companies
Industry UsageManufacturing, construction, product designMechanical engineering, industrial design
Primary FocusCreating detailed 3D models and drawings in SolidworksDrafting mechanical components and assemblies

While both roles involve technical drawing skills, a Solidworks Detailer specializes in creating detailed 3D models and drawings using Solidworks software, often with certification. A Mechanical Drafter focuses on drafting mechanical parts and assemblies, typically with a background in engineering technology. Both roles are essential in manufacturing and engineering industries, but the Solidworks Detailer emphasizes 3D modeling expertise.

Is Solidworks in demand?

SolidWorks detailers are in demand in industries such as manufacturing, engineering, and product design, where 3D modeling and CAD skills are essential. Proficiency in SolidWorks, along with knowledge of drafting standards and certifications, can improve job prospects as companies seek skilled CAD technicians for design and documentation tasks.
