Solid State Electrolyte information

What is the difference between Solid State Electrolyte vs Battery Engineer?

AspectSolid State ElectrolyteBattery Engineer
Required CredentialsMaterials science or electrochemistry degree, specialized knowledge in solid electrolytesElectrical or chemical engineering degree, knowledge of battery systems
Work EnvironmentResearch labs, R&D facilities, manufacturing settingsDesign labs, manufacturing plants, testing facilities
Industry UsageBattery technology development, energy storage solutionsBattery design, testing, and optimization

Solid State Electrolyte specialists focus on developing and improving solid electrolyte materials for batteries, while Battery Engineers work on designing, testing, and manufacturing complete battery systems. Both roles require a background in materials science or engineering and often collaborate in the energy storage industry.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a solid state electrolyte research scientist, and why are they important?

To succeed as a Solid State Electrolyte Research Scientist, a strong background in materials science, chemistry, or electrochemistry—typically with a PhD or relevant research experience—is essential. Familiarity with laboratory techniques, characterization tools (such as XRD, SEM, and EIS), and data analysis software is crucial for experimental and analytical work. Strong problem-solving, teamwork, and scientific communication skills help researchers collaborate and share findings effectively. These competencies drive innovation in developing safer, higher-performance solid-state batteries and advancing energy storage technology.

What are some common challenges faced when working as a solid state electrolyte researcher in battery development?

Solid state electrolyte researchers often encounter challenges such as ensuring chemical and mechanical stability at the electrode interface, achieving high ionic conductivity at room temperature, and scaling up synthesis methods from laboratory to industrial production. The role frequently involves troubleshooting issues related to material purity and compatibility with various electrode materials. Collaborating closely with materials scientists, chemists, and engineers is essential to address these interdisciplinary challenges and drive innovation in next-generation battery technologies.

What is a solid state electrolyte?

A solid state electrolyte is a type of electrolyte material used in batteries and other electrochemical devices, where the ionic conductor is in a solid phase instead of a liquid. These materials allow ions to move between the electrodes, enabling the flow of electricity, while also offering improved safety, stability, and energy density compared to liquid electrolytes. Solid state electrolytes are commonly used in advanced lithium-ion batteries, solid-state batteries, and next-generation energy storage systems.

Job description

Position Overview:
Solid Power is seeking an experienced product engineer with background in materials chemistry and battery systems to join our team working to revolutionize the battery industry through the development of next-generation, solid-state electrolyte materials. Solid Power is a dynamic, fast-paced, and collaborative environment. The product engineer will be part of the Electrolyte Systems Engineering department and work on various projects relating to the synthesis, characterization, and performance improvement of solid state electrolyte powders to better meet our customers' needs.
Job Duties:
  • Identify key factors for success in electrolyte synthesis and downstream processing to improve product quality and performance.
  • Conduct relevant characterization (e.g., physical, chemical, and electrochemical) on electrolytes and electrode materials as needed to identify relationships between upstream process, material structure, and resultant properties and performance.
  • Participate with cross functional teams to improve electrolyte production and performance, and champion efforts to conform our product to needs expressed by the voice of the customer.
  • Conform to all safety precautions and protocols.
  • Mentor junior team members, operators, and interns.
  • Maintain thorough and accurate records of all conducted experimentation
  • Document and follow Solid Power's standard operating procedures and support the drafting or improvement of SOPs as processes evolve and change.

Qualifications/Requirements:
  • PhD in Chemistry, Materials Science, Engineering, or related discipline
  • 3+ years of experience in the chemical manufacturing or battery industry is desirable
  • Background in inorganic, solid state, or synthetic chemical discipline is desirable
  • Experience in materials characterization techniques (e.g., XRD, TGA, DSC, FT-IR, Raman, SEM) and exposure to electrochemical testing methods (e.g., battery cycling, CV, EIS, GITT)
  • Experience working with air- and water-sensitive materials.
  • Excellent work ethic and ability to rapidly demonstrate independence.
  • Ability to adapt to a rapidly evolving research environment
  • Structured problem-solving and analytical skills

Physical Requirements:
  • Required to wear Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) as necessary including, but not limited to eye protection, hair net, gloves, face mask, coveralls, full-face respirator or PAPR
  • Prolonged periods of sitting at a desk
  • Ability to lift up to 50 lbs

Salary Range: $100,000 - $145,000/year
Benefits: Solid Power offers a comprehensive benefit package that includes medical/dental/vision insurance, employer paid Life/AD&D/STD/LTD insurance, 401k with company match, 8 paid holidays + the week between Christmas and New Years off, Unlimited PTO, up to six (6) weeks paid FMLA leave, cell phone reimbursement and eligibility to participate in our bonus and equity plans.
Export Control Requirements: This position could require access to technology, software and other information that is subject to governmental access control restrictions, due to export controls. Employment in this position is conditioned on the continued availability of government authorization to authorize release of such items, to the extent required, including without limitation an export license, or other documentation required to establish authorization to receive access to such items.
