What are the typical daily responsibilities of a Solar Project Manager?

A Solar Project Manager is responsible for overseeing the planning, execution, and completion of solar installation projects. Their daily tasks often include coordinating with engineers, contractors, and clients, monitoring project timelines and budgets, ensuring compliance with safety and regulatory standards, and resolving any issues that arise on-site. They also handle documentation, procurement of materials, and communicate progress to stakeholders. The role requires strong organizational skills and frequent collaboration with multidisciplinary teams to ensure successful project delivery.

What are Solar Projects?

Solar projects refer to initiatives that involve the design, development, installation, and management of solar energy systems. These projects can range from small residential rooftop solar panels to large-scale solar farms that generate electricity for thousands of homes. Solar projects aim to harness energy from the sun using photovoltaic cells or solar thermal systems, providing a clean, renewable alternative to fossil fuels. They often require collaboration among engineers, project managers, electricians, and environmental specialists. The growing focus on sustainability and clean energy has made solar projects increasingly popular worldwide.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a Solar Project Manager, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Solar Project Manager, you need expertise in project management, renewable energy systems, and a relevant engineering or technical degree. Familiarity with project management software (such as MS Project or Primavera), permitting processes, and industry certifications like PMP or NABCEP are typically required. Strong leadership, problem-solving, and effective communication skills help manage teams and stakeholder expectations. These skills are vital for delivering solar projects on time, within budget, and in compliance with safety and regulatory standards.

We are seeking a highly organized and proactive Solar Specialist to support the intake, coordination, and execution of orphaned or stalled solar projects. This role serves as a central operational hub between customers, financiers, field teams, subcontractors, utilities, and internal stakeholders to ensure efficient project recovery and completion.

This position emphasizes strong project coordination, customer communication, and cross-functional collaboration within a complex and fast-paced solar environment. The specialist will manage projects from intake through remediation, inspection, and PTO, ensuring high-quality outcomes and full transparency across all stakeholders.

Essential Duties:

  • Ensure accurate data entry, documentation, and status tracking across all project phases.
  • Monitor timelines, dependencies, and completion milestones across the remediation lifecycle.

Scheduling & Coordination

  • Coordinate site visits, inspections, and remediation work with customers, field crews, and subcontractors.
  • Schedule and manage Request a Work Order processes for site surveys and on-site fixes.
  • Ensure appropriate resource allocation (preferably install crews or foremen) for accurate scope assessment.
  • Coordinate multiple parties, materials, and access requirements to maintain project momentum.

Customer Communication

  • Serve as the primary point of contact for customers throughout the remediation lifecycle.
  • Conduct initial outreach to establish project context and confirm customer participation.
  • Execute structured contact attempts (call, text, email) and manage non-responsive cases.
  • Provide clear, timely updates on project status, scheduling, and next steps.
  • Handle escalations, reschedules, and sensitive customer situations with professionalism.

Operational Support & Process Improvement

  • Maintain a strong grasp of assigned work in process (WIP), ensuring balance between project throughput and customer experience.
  • Gather critical documentation including site plans, permits, and utility information from financiers, customers, AHJs, and utilities.
  • Support scope development by reviewing site survey data and identifying discrepancies with plan sets.
  • Assist in preparing project bids using established tools and scope inputs.
  • Track and manage project progression through permitting, remediation, inspection, and PTO stages.

Collaboration & Reporting

  • Work closely with operations leadership, engineering, electricians, utilities teams, and subcontractors.
  • Coordinate with financiers for bid submission, approvals, and project updates.
  • Ensure alignment across departments to meet service-level expectations and project timelines.
  • Provide accurate reporting and real-time status updates on project pipelines and risks.

Minimum Qualifications:

  • Experience in solar project coordination, scheduling, or work order management (solar, construction, utilities, or field services preferred).
  • Familiarity with solar PV systems or electrical diagrams.
  • Knowledge of solar PV systems, project lifecycle, or remediation workflows.
  • Strong organizational and multitasking skills with high attention to detail.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
  • Proficiency with CRM systems, scheduling tools, and MS Office Suite or Google Workspace.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Advanced electrical knowledge of solar PV systems, field service operations, or O&M workflows.
  • Experience with permitting, AHJs, utilities, or interconnection processes.
  • Experience in a customer-facing service or operations role.
