A solar project manager oversees the installation of solar projects, from small residential and commercial roofing projects to large-scale solar power plants. Your duties and responsibilities in this career can vary slightly depending on the scale of your project plan, but many of the principles are overlapping. You need to know how to develop budgets, manage proposals and bids from contractors, negotiate prices, pull building permits, coordinate the construction schedule, and be familiar with tax incentives and rebates for which your clients may qualify.

To thrive as a Solar Project Manager, you need strong project management skills, knowledge of renewable energy systems, and typically a degree in engineering or a related field. Familiarity with project management software (such as MS Project or Primavera), CAD tools, and relevant certifications like PMP or NABCEP is often required. Outstanding communication, leadership, and problem-solving abilities help manage teams, stakeholders, and complex project timelines. These skills ensure solar projects are completed efficiently, safely, and within budget, maximizing both sustainability and client satisfaction.

Job description

ABOUT THRASHER
The Thrasher Group has been improving the communities where we live and work since 1983 - not as outside consultants, but as residents and neighbors. Thrasher is the largest privately owned architecture, engineering, and surveying firm in West Virginia, and maintains a growing presence in Ohio, Pennsylvania, Maryland, and Virginia. Our roots throughout central Appalachia and the Mid-Atlantic region have allowed us to build a reputation for doing meaningful work for communities of all sizes.
What does this mean for you? Thrasher provides real opportunities to be a part of vital projects, handle real-world responsibility, and develop a career that grows with you. Our multi-disciplinary teams work across the full life cycle of a project and with an array of industry professionals - giving you the knowledge and experience to do more. In short, we're not a stepping stone. Thrasher is a firm where people build better careers and better communities, all in the places they call home.
ROLE OVERVIEW
As our energy practice expands rapidly across the region, we are seeking a Project Manager with a strong civil site development background to lead energy infrastructure projects while also supporting our established Land Development team. This role sits at the intersection of two growing practice areas: utility-scale energy development - solar, storage, substations, and utility corridors - and a broad portfolio of commercial, residential, industrial, and recreational land development work.
KEY RESPONSIBILITIES
  • Lead civil site design for utility-scale energy projects including solar farms, substations, battery energy storage systems (BESS), and utility corridors
  • Oversee preparation of permitting and construction plans for energy and land development projects, including design, layout, grading, drainage, stormwater management, access roads, and E&S controls
  • Perform or review calculations for design, grade lines, alignments, and drainage
  • Coordinate with energy developers, utilities, agencies, and equipment vendors throughout the project life cycle
  • Manage permitting efforts across federal, state, and local regulatory bodies for energy and land development projects
  • Prepare detailed project cost estimates
  • Assist clients with bidding and construction administration
  • Coordinate with construction inspection personnel and review daily field reports to ensure contracted work meets design intent
  • Manage all aspects of project delivery including client communication, financial management, and internal and external team coordination
  • Mentor and develop junior staff
  • Participate in business development including client meetings, proposals, RFQ submissions, and strategic planning with division leadership and marketing staff

WHAT YOU'LL BRING
Education: BS in Civil Engineering from an ABET-accredited university; other engineering degrees considered based on relevant experience
Experience: 5-15 years of experience preferred; demonstrated experience with energy infrastructure or utility-scale civil site development strongly preferred
Licensure: PE certification required
Energy expertise: Familiarity with energy development permitting, interconnection requirements, or construction administration for energy projects a plus
Skills: Strong project management, communication, and client relationship skills
BENEFITS
We offer a comprehensive benefits package including health insurance; flexible spending and dependent care accounts; a Health Savings Account with company contributions; company-paid short- and long-term disability; and a $100,000 life insurance policy paid for by the company. We also offer supplemental life, dental, and vision insurance, along with accident, hospital indemnity, and critical illness coverage for added peace of mind.
We invest in our employees' futures through a traditional and Roth 401(k) with up to a 4% company match, profit sharing, and discretionary bonuses. Employees enjoy paid time off, paid parental leave, and support for continuing education and professional registrations, plus assistance with warehouse club memberships, gym, and race entry fees.
We recognize the importance of work-life balance and offer schedule flexibility within a family-oriented culture that's been building communities across the Mid-Atlantic for over 40 years.
The Thrasher Group conducts pre-employment drug screens and background checks on all applicants who accept offers of employment. Authorization to work in the United States is a precondition of employment. EEO / AA / E-Verify employer.
