OPERATIONS DEVELOPMENT ENGINEER (STARLINK)
Starlink is the world's largest satellite constellation and is providing fast, reliable internet to millions of users worldwide. We've only begun to scratch the surface of Starlink's potential global impact and are looking for best-in-class engineers to help develop the systems that enable providing service in new markets and even greater system performance and growth potential.
As an Operations Development Engineer, you will be responsible for engineering the operational systems and processes used to support the Starlink network as it scales to millions of users around the globe. Join the team operating the network that is revolutionizing global connectivity and internet access. A successful Operations Development Engineer will create the tools, technology and processes to maintain, operate and evolve the most advanced network in the solar system. You will utilize operational data to identify and prioritize various improvements that improve our operational efficiency and maintain the overall health of operations. You will work with subsystem responsible engineers, software engineers, and network engineers to develop alerts, mitigations, and terrestrial assets and drive improvements to core Starlink systems. Through continuous improvement, you will drive process and automation upgrades to the point of minimal manual intervention. You will be responsible for the complete lifecycle of the projects you own, including development, testing, deployment and support.
RESPONSIBILITIES:
Develop, implement and scale Starlink Network Operations processes and tools to provide global internet access
Collect and analyze operations data to identify and implement efficiency improvements for operational processes and workflows and translate it into reporting, and recommendations for the development team
Collaborate with development teams to analyze the impact of proposed workflow or process changes on operations health and efficiency
Work with development engineering teams to drive design for operations, identifying and addressing potential operational scaling issues early in development lifecycles and incorporating debugging tools and strategies to ensure effective handover to operations
Interact with key stakeholders to identify their desired outcomes, take their inputs and deliver improvements to Network Operations owned processes
Work with the diverse teams across the Starlink program to develop monitoring, detection and response processes that drive quick resolution to emergent network events
Define and develop projects, milestones, and maintain roadmaps, practicing flexible prioritization and scope management to deliver on program directives
Take extreme ownership of deliverables and make risk-conscious decisions under pressure
Own data integrity, tool & dashboard maintenance, and reporting quality for the Network Operations Engineering Team
Define and develop department-level metrics and associated dashboards that quantify the health of our operations
Additional Qualifications/Responsibilities
BASIC QUALIFICATIONS:
Bachelor's degree in a STEM discipline; OR 2+ years of professional experience in software development or data analysis in lieu of a degree
Experience utilizing SQL or other query language for data analysis
Experience with Python
PREFERRED SKILLS AND EXPERIENCE:
2+ years of experience developing software, analysis, processes, or projects in a rapidly changing, highly demanding environment with ability to run these projects independently
Strong design and problem-solving skills, with a focus on operations at scale
Proficiency with statistics, data analysis, data visualization and cost benefit analysis
Understanding of data engineering regarding the design and implementation of systems used for collecting, storing and analyzing large volumes of data
Experience with operational open-source technologies such as Prometheus, Grafana, PostgreSQL, Spark SQL, PowerBI, Jupyter, Datahub and AirFlow
Ability to work cross-functionally with operations, engineering and supply chain teams
Experience creating detailed documentation and procedures from scratch
Experience in optimizing and automating operational processes and workflows
Familiarity with technology and operational concepts of internet service providers, mobile network operators, or content delivery networks
Experience working within complex, software defined networking (SDN) and/or network function virtualization (NFV) environments
ADDITIONAL REQUIREMENTS
Must be able to participate in on-call rotation to support critical operations as needed
COMPENSATION AND BENEFITS:
Pay range:
Level I: $100,000.00 - $120,000.00/per year
Level II: $115,000.00 - $135,000.00/per year
Your actual level and base salary will be determined on a case-by-case basis and may vary based on the following considerations: job-related knowledge and skills, education, and experience.
Base salary is just one part of your total rewards package at SpaceX. You may also be eligible for long-term incentives, in the form of company stock, stock options, or long-term cash awards, as well as potential discretionary bonuses and the ability to purchase additional stock at a discount through an Employee Stock Purchase Plan. You may also accrue 3 weeks of paid vacation and will be eligible for 10 or more paid holidays per year. Employees in Washington State accrue paid sick time in compliance with state and federal law. Company shuttles are offered to employees for roundtrip travel from select Seattle locations to the SpaceX Redmond office Monday to Friday.
