What is a solar physicist?

A Solar Physicist is a scientist who studies the Sun, including its structure, behavior, and impact on the solar system. They use both ground-based and space-based observatories to analyze solar phenomena such as sunspots, solar flares, and the solar wind. Solar Physicists contribute to our understanding of how solar activity affects space weather, which can impact satellites, power grids, and communication systems on Earth. Their research is crucial for predicting solar storms and mitigating their effects on technology and human activities.

What are some typical research projects or collaborations that a solar physicist might be involved in?

Solar Physicists often work on projects studying solar phenomena such as sunspots, solar flares, and coronal mass ejections, using data from space-based observatories and ground telescopes. Collaboration is common, both within interdisciplinary research teams and with international space agencies like NASA or ESA. Many roles involve coordinating with engineers, data scientists, and other physicists to analyze large datasets and develop models that predict solar activity. These projects contribute to our understanding of space weather and its impact on Earth, making teamwork and communication skills essential in this field.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a solar physicist, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Solar Physicist, you need a strong background in physics, mathematics, and astronomy, typically supported by a Ph.D. in astrophysics or a related field. Proficiency with data analysis software, programming languages like Python or IDL, and familiarity with solar observation instruments is essential. Strong analytical thinking, problem-solving skills, and clear scientific communication set outstanding candidates apart. These competencies enable effective research, accurate data interpretation, and the advancement of our understanding of solar phenomena.

What is the difference between Solar Physicist vs Solar Engineer?

AspectSolar PhysicistSolar Engineer
Required CredentialsPhysics degree, often PhD, specialized in solar phenomenaEngineering degree, often Bachelor's or Master's, focused on solar technology
Work EnvironmentResearch labs, observatories, academic institutionsSolar power plants, manufacturing facilities, project sites
Industry UsageStudying solar activity, solar physics researchDesigning and implementing solar energy systems

Solar Physicists focus on understanding the sun's physical properties and solar phenomena through research, often working in labs or academic settings. Solar Engineers, on the other hand, design and develop solar energy systems for practical use in renewable energy projects. While both roles require knowledge of solar science, their work environments and objectives differ significantly.

How much do solar physicists make?

Solar physicists typically earn a median annual salary of around $70,000 to $110,000, depending on experience, education, and location. Advanced roles or those in research institutions and government agencies may offer higher compensation, especially for those with specialized skills or advanced degrees such as a Ph.D.

Compensation: Wide open

About the Opportunity:
Join this decades old firm (240 employees) that is experiencing a growth spurt working on the latest energy storage, testing and power electronics technologies for the EV charging, solar and data center industries. They are looking for 2 seasoned (lead) engineers that can hit the ground running with full start-to-finish product lifecycle leadership experience - ideally with certification involvement. They are looking for candidates that enjoy a very fast-past environment. High power - 1500 volts to 2000 volts. They also have a 3rd opening - looking for full life cycle experience and 3+ years of experience. This is a very small team so the leaders need to have had full product engineering responsibility.

We are currently seeking a Hardware Power Electronics Engineer to join our development team to help expand our product offering. Our ideal candidate has a strong background in IGBT, Silicon Carbide MOSFET, GaN power conversion design and FPGA control experience.

What You'll Do:
  • Develop next generation power electronics for solar, energy storage, EV charging and Test applications using SiC and GaN mosfets.
  • Opportunities to develop high-frequency bidirectional DC-DC converters, AC-DC grid-tie inverter and resonant converters.
  • Requires the ability to develop in a very aggressive timeline with a team. We have huge opportunities, but very aggressive timelines associated with those opportunities.
  • Lead development from concept to productization.
  • Develop innovative digital control algorithms.
  • Develop innovative magnetics.
  • Work closely with PCB layout designers to implement high density power designs.
  • Work closely with mechanical designers to develop the product design (sheet metal, heatsinks, bus bars, etc.).
  • Achieve UL & CE compliance for the various products.
  • Lead EMC compliance activities.
  • Assist team members in achieving project level budgets on assigned projects.
  • Participate in an environment of continuous learning and driving standardization and high quality in design with a focus on manufacturability.
