What does a solar panel installer do?

Solar panel installers, also known as solar photovoltaic (PV) installers, are responsible for setting up solar panels on rooftops or other structures to convert sunlight into energy. Their job includes assembling, installing, and maintaining solar panel systems, ensuring they are correctly oriented and securely mounted. Installers also connect panels to electrical systems and may perform troubleshooting or repairs as needed. This role requires technical skills, knowledge of electrical systems, and attention to safety protocols.

What are some common challenges faced by solar panel installers on the job, and how can they be managed?

Solar panel installers often encounter challenges such as working at heights, dealing with unpredictable weather, and ensuring precise system placement for optimal efficiency. Safety is a top priority, so installers must consistently use proper equipment and follow safety protocols. Additionally, collaborating with electricians and other team members is essential to ensure that installations meet both technical and regulatory standards. Effective communication and ongoing training can help address these challenges and ensure smooth project completion.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a solar panel installer, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Solar Panel Installer, you need a solid understanding of electrical systems, basic construction skills, and often a high school diploma or vocational training in solar technology. Familiarity with hand and power tools, safety equipment, and knowledge of industry certifications such as NABCEP are typically required. Attention to detail, problem-solving, and effective teamwork are important soft skills for ensuring safe and precise installations. These competencies are crucial for delivering efficient, reliable solar solutions while maintaining safety and regulatory compliance.

Job description

dcbel Inc. (www.dcbel.energy) designs and sells residential products to make clean, efficient, and sustainable energy accessible to all — because everyone in the world deserves energy without compromise.

dcbel is at the leading edge of the residential energy revolution. Its products enable decentralized energy consumption and production through its vertically integrated suite of energy hardware and software products, and their supporting infrastructure.

Our flagship product, dcbel Ara, is a Home Energy Station that gives everyone ownership over their energy supply by using solar power to charge their EV and power their home, unlocking their EV’s battery for blackout protection, backup power (V2H) and grid services (V2G), and optimizing the energy flow between their solar panels, EVs, stationary battery and the grid.

The opportunity

dcbel is looking to hire technical sales engineers to work in our Sales team. Successful candidates will play a pivotal role in supporting the team with technical product sales, demonstrations, webinars for existing and prospective industry partners.

  • Support Channel Sales (installers, home builders), Chorus Sales, and partner (Automotive, Utilities) adoption of dcbel Hardware and Software Products
  • Support Sales with technical product information and evangelization, demonstrations, webinars for prospective B2B customers and partners
  • Pre-Sales with focus on B2B customer discovery & qualification, presentation, Q&A
  • Supporting technical product sales to Utilities and Aggregators, EV Manufacturers, and Residential Solar & Storage market. Support Business Development and Sales with product demonstrations, webinars, and other technical product information sessions, for prospective or existing customers
  • Own the technical content of customer proposals, including RFI/RFP/RFQ responses, and grant funding opportunities
  • Lead technical partner presentations and deep-dive sessions with utilities, aggregators, and automotive OEMs
Key requirements
  • 7–10+ years of experience in a technical, product-focused pre-sales or applications engineering role (not B2B Sales) in the energy industry
  • Demonstrable experience supporting selling in a technical and product-focused role (not B2B solutions) in the energy industry
  • Direct experience with distributed energy resources (solar, storage, EV charging, V2X) — product, deployment, or program side
  • First‑hand field experience: commissioning, installation oversight, site troubleshooting, or utility pilot deployments
  • Solid working knowledge of power electronics — inverters, bidirectional DC/DC and DC/AC conversion, protection and safety;
  • Knowledge of EV charging communication protocols (ISO 15118) and DER integration protocols (IEEE 2030.5, OpenADR) — able to debug an integration, not just describe it;
  • Working knowledge of IoT and site-level communication protocols (MQTT, Modbus TCP/RTU, SunSpec, Zigbee/Matter);
  • Comfortable with logs, packet captures, API documentation and lab/field test setups to diagnose issues live with a customer or partner
Profile
  • Strong presenter — able to run partner presentations, technical webinars and live product demos with confidence
  • Able to pitch at the right altitude for the audience, from utility program managers and OEM engineering teams to installers
  • Self-directed and comfortable operating as the sole technical voice in a customer conversation
  • Ability and willingness to travel; 25%+ in the US
What's in it for you
  • Be part of a company that is backed by numerous globally respected investors and has world-changing patents in an industry changing for the first time in history.
  • Grow your professional experience amongst blue chip partners and a close-knit team of committed and experienced energy experts who deeply care about the work they do.
