Solar Interconnection Coordinator information

What is a solar interconnection coordinator?

Solar Interconnection Coordinators are professionals responsible for managing the process of connecting solar energy systems to the electrical grid. They serve as a liaison between solar installation companies, utility providers, and regulatory agencies to ensure that all technical and regulatory requirements are met. Their duties typically include preparing and submitting interconnection applications, reviewing technical drawings, tracking project status, and resolving any issues that may arise during the approval process. By facilitating smooth and timely grid connections, they help ensure solar projects are completed efficiently and in compliance with all standards.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a solar interconnection coordinator?

To thrive as a Solar Interconnection Coordinator, you need a solid understanding of electrical systems, grid interconnection processes, and renewable energy regulations, usually supported by a degree in engineering or a related field. Familiarity with utility interconnection software, AutoCAD, and project management tools, as well as knowledge of codes like NEC and IEEE standards, is typically required. Strong organizational skills, attention to detail, and effective communication are crucial for managing multiple projects and collaborating with stakeholders. These skills ensure timely, compliant interconnections and smooth coordination between project teams, utilities, and regulatory bodies.

What are some common challenges faced by solar interconnection coordinators during project development, and how can they be managed?

Solar Interconnection Coordinators often encounter challenges such as navigating utility approval processes, managing tight project timelines, and ensuring compliance with evolving regulations. These hurdles can be managed by maintaining clear communication with utility representatives, staying up-to-date with local and national interconnection requirements, and implementing robust project tracking systems. Proactive problem-solving and strong organizational skills are crucial for keeping projects on schedule and ensuring successful grid integration of solar systems.

What is the difference between Solar Interconnection Coordinator vs Solar Project Engineer?

AspectSolar Interconnection CoordinatorSolar Project Engineer
CredentialsTypically requires a degree in engineering or related field, with knowledge of interconnection processesRequires engineering degree, often with project management or design certifications
Work EnvironmentFocuses on coordinating with utilities, regulators, and project teams during interconnectionDesigns, plans, and manages solar project development and implementation
Industry UsageCommonly employed by utilities, developers, and project owners during interconnection phaseUsed by engineering firms, developers, and construction teams throughout project lifecycle

The Solar Interconnection Coordinator primarily manages the process of connecting solar projects to the grid, working closely with utilities and regulatory bodies. In contrast, the Solar Project Engineer focuses on designing and executing the technical aspects of solar projects. Both roles require engineering knowledge but differ in scope and responsibilities within the solar industry.

Job description

Commercial Solar Interconnection Specialist About Buffalo Solar

Buffalo Solar is a commercial solar EPC specializing in distributed generation and battery energy storage systems throughout New York. We design, engineer, and deliver commercial rooftop solar projects ranging from approximately 50 kW to 2 MW.

Position Summary

We're looking for a technically minded professional who understands commercial utility interconnectionโ€”not just project coordination.

This role owns the technical and administrative execution of utility interconnection from application through Permission to Operate (PTO). You'll work directly with utilities, engineers, AHJs, and project teams to navigate utility requirements, technical reviews, supplemental studies, protection requirements, metering configurations, and commissioning.

What You'll Do
  • Prepare and manage utility interconnection applications for commercial solar and solar + storage projects.
  • Review utility requirements, study comments, supplemental review requests, and technical feedback.
  • Coordinate utility deliverables including single-line diagrams, equipment specifications, relay settings, metering details, and protection documentation.
  • Interface directly with NYSEG, RG&E, National Grid, utilities, consulting engineers, and AHJs.
  • Coordinate witness testing, commissioning activities, and Permission to Operate (PTO).
  • Track project milestones while identifying technical risks before they impact construction.
  • Continuously improve Buffalo Solar's interconnection standards, documentation, and workflows.
What We're Looking For
  • Experience with commercial distributed generation interconnection.
  • Working knowledge of utility application requirements and approval processes.
  • Ability to interpret single-line diagrams, electrical plans, protection requirements, and metering configurations.
  • Familiarity with battery energy storage systems (BESS) and their impact on utility review and controls.
  • Strong technical writing and documentation skills.
  • Excellent organizational skills with the ability to manage multiple projects simultaneously.
Preferred Experience
  • Commercial solar projects (50 kWโ€“2 MW).
  • NYSEG, RG&E, National Grid, or other New York utility territories.
  • CESIR studies, supplemental review, relay coordination, witness testing, and PTO documentation.
  • Understanding of IEEE 1547, distributed generation interconnection standards, and utility protection philosophy.

This position is ideal for someone who enjoys solving technical problems, understands electrical power systems, and wants to become an expert in utility interconnectionโ€”not someone looking for a traditional administrative project coordination role.
