How much do solar engineering jobs pay per hour?

As of Jun 28, 2026, the average hourly pay for solar engineering in the United States is $48.92, according to ZipRecruiter salary data. Most workers in this role earn between $29.57 and $55.05 per hour, depending on experience, location, and employer.

What are some common challenges faced by solar engineers during project implementation?

Solar engineers often encounter challenges such as site assessment difficulties, unexpected weather conditions, and ensuring regulatory compliance during project implementation. Coordinating with construction teams, managing supply chain logistics for specialized solar components, and adapting designs to meet local environmental constraints are also frequent hurdles. Effective communication, thorough planning, and staying updated on industry standards can help address these challenges and ensure successful project delivery.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a Solar Engineer, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Solar Engineer, you need a solid background in electrical or mechanical engineering, renewable energy principles, and a relevant engineering degree. Familiarity with photovoltaic (PV) system design software, CAD tools, and industry certifications like NABCEP are typically required. Strong problem-solving, project management, and communication skills help you excel in team environments and client interactions. These competencies are essential for ensuring efficient, safe, and compliant solar energy solutions in a rapidly evolving industry.

Is solar engineering a good career?

Solar engineering is a growing field focused on designing and implementing solar energy systems, requiring knowledge of electrical and mechanical engineering principles. It offers opportunities in renewable energy industries, often involves project management and technical skills, and can provide stable employment as the demand for clean energy increases.

What engineers make $300,000 a year?

Senior engineers in specialized fields such as petroleum, aerospace, or software engineering can earn $300,000 or more annually, especially with extensive experience, advanced skills, and leadership roles. High compensation often involves working in high-demand industries, holding managerial or executive positions, or possessing rare technical expertise and certifications.

What is solar engineering?

Solar engineering is a field of engineering focused on designing, developing, and implementing systems that harness energy from the sun. This can involve photovoltaic solar panels, solar thermal systems, and other technologies that convert sunlight into usable energy. Solar engineers work on projects ranging from residential rooftop installations to large-scale solar farms, ensuring systems are efficient, safe, and environmentally friendly. The field combines knowledge of electrical, mechanical, and environmental engineering to create sustainable energy solutions.

What is the difference between Solar Engineering vs Solar Design?

AspectSolar EngineeringSolar Design
Required CredentialsEngineering degree, PE license often preferredTechnical training, certification in design software
Work EnvironmentDesigning systems, analyzing technical specs, project planningCreating layouts, selecting components, drafting plans
Employer & Industry UsageEngineering firms, solar project developersDesign firms, installation companies
Common Search & ComparisonFocus on technical engineering aspectsFocus on layout and system design

Solar Engineering involves technical analysis, system design, and ensuring compliance with engineering standards, often requiring an engineering degree and licensure. Solar Design focuses on creating detailed layouts, selecting components, and drafting plans for installation, typically requiring technical training and design software skills. Both roles are essential in solar projects but differ in scope and responsibilities.

What engineers make $500,000?

Senior engineers in specialized fields such as petroleum, aerospace, or software engineering can earn $500,000 or more annually, often through a combination of base salary, bonuses, and stock options. These roles typically require advanced skills, extensive experience, and sometimes leadership responsibilities or working in high-cost-of-living areas.

How much do solar energy engineers make?

Solar energy engineers typically earn a median annual salary of around $70,000 to $100,000, depending on experience, education, and location. Entry-level positions may start lower, while experienced engineers or those with specialized skills can earn higher salaries, especially in regions with high solar adoption or advanced projects.

Job description

About Us
ย
Solar Landscape is the leading commercial rooftop solar developer in the U.S. Only 4% of commercial rooftops host solar today - we're changing that, fast. Commercial rooftop solar is the fastest, smartest way to build new clean power - delivering megawatts of generation in months, not years, and powering America's energy and future right where it's needed most. By turning rooftops into local power plants, we're reshaping how - and how fast - energy gets built in the U.S.

Recognized as the #1 Distributed Generation Developer by New Project Media, the #1 National Commercial Rooftop Solar Developer by Solar Power World, and winner of the U.S. Department of Energy's Grand Prize for Clean Energy, Solar Landscape is defining the future of energy generation in America.

Headquartered in Asbury Park, New Jersey, Solar Landscape has offices in Chicago, Baltimore, and New York City and operates in over a dozen states nationwide.

We move fast, solve hard problems, and take our work seriously - but never ourselves. We value clear thinking, accountability, and execution. At the same time, we're collaborative by default, and believe the best work happens when people enjoy working together. Our team is made up of smart, grounded people who show up for each other - whether that's troubleshooting a system design or catching up over lunch.

If you're looking to do meaningful work in a high-performance environment - and be part of the team reshaping how energy gets built in the U.S. - we'd love to meet you.
