What is the difference between Solana Smart Contract vs Solana Developer?

AspectSolana Smart ContractSolana Developer
CredentialsKnowledge of Rust, C, or C++Proficiency in Solana SDK, programming languages, and blockchain concepts
Work EnvironmentDeveloping, testing, and deploying smart contracts on Solana blockchainBuilding decentralized applications (dApps) and integrating smart contracts into projects
Industry UsageCreating on-chain logic and protocolsFull-stack development of Solana-based applications

Solana Smart Contract developers focus on writing and deploying on-chain code, while Solana Developers have a broader role that includes building applications that interact with these contracts. Both roles require blockchain knowledge, but the Smart Contract role is more specialized in on-chain logic.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a Solana Smart Contract Developer, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Solana Smart Contract Developer, you need a solid understanding of blockchain fundamentals, Rust programming, and smart contract architecture, often supported by a degree in computer science or related experience. Familiarity with Solana's development tools like Solana CLI, Anchor framework, and version control systems such as Git is typically required. Strong problem-solving abilities, attention to detail, and effective collaboration are vital soft skills in this field. These skills and qualifications ensure the creation of secure, efficient, and reliable decentralized applications on the Solana blockchain.

What are some common challenges faced when developing Solana smart contracts, and how can I prepare for them?

Developing Solana smart contracts (programs) often involves mastering Rust or C, understanding Solana's unique account model, and handling low-level memory management. Common challenges include ensuring security against exploits, managing transaction size limits, and working with limited debugging tools compared to more mature ecosystems. To prepare, familiarize yourself with Solana's documentation, participate in community forums, and practice building sample projects to gain confidence with the development workflow and best practices.

What are Solana smart contracts?

Solana smart contracts, often called 'programs,' are pieces of code deployed on the Solana blockchain that execute predefined actions when certain conditions are met. Unlike Ethereum, Solana smart contracts are typically written in Rust, C, or C++ and run on the Solana runtime. They enable developers to build decentralized applications (dApps) such as decentralized exchanges, NFT platforms, and lending protocols. Solana's focus on high throughput and low fees makes its smart contracts particularly suitable for applications requiring fast transactions.

Job description

Intro

M0 is the modular stablecoin infrastructure. It gives businesses everything they need to launch a stablecoin built around their product, with separate, configurable layers for application, distribution, and issuance. Choose your regulated issuer, with the option to switch them later. Design how your stablecoin behaves with templates and custom logic. Tap shared liquidity across the network from day one. Other stablecoin platforms bundle every layer into a single fixed stack. M0 keeps them independent, so your stablecoin stays yours.

M0 is seeking an Issuance Engineering Lead who will play a fundamental role in shaping the future of our organization. As Issuance Engineering Lead, you will own the smart contract and backend systems that power M0 stablecoin issuance across EVM and non-EVM chains (Solana and others).

You will lead and build out the team responsible for making issuance fast, safe, and capital-efficient — from on-chain programs to the backend systems, APIs, and UIs that sit on top of them. The ideal candidate is a self-driven engineering lead with strong ownership instincts and a bias for action, equally comfortable in EVM and non-EVM environments, who brings substantial expertise across blockchain applications and infrastructure and thrives in fast-paced settings.

Key Responsibilities:
  • Build and lead a high-caliber engineering team delivering on-chain programs and backend services.
  • Architect and ship smart contracts across EVM and non-EVM chains (Solana and others) with a high bar for precision and safety.
  • Mentor engineers and set the technical direction for the issuance stack.
  • Drive code and design reviews, raising the quality bar across the team.
  • Prepare codebases for third-party audits with comprehensive tests, invariants, AI-assisted review, and fuzz testing harnesses.
Qualifications:
  • 7+ years of software engineering experience shipping production DeFi and backend systems.
  • 2+ years leading engineering teams, or a clear track record suggesting you'll pick it up quickly.
  • Proven history of deploying and maintaining complex, high-precision on-chain systems in production.
  • Production experience writing backend systems in Rust.
  • Solid Solidity and EVM development experience, combined with strong familiarity with the SPL Token program, Token-2022, and Associated Token Accounts.
  • Experience with cross-chain messaging and bridging protocols — Wormhole NTT, LayerZero, Hyperlane, or Chainlink CCIP.
Nice to Have:
  • Prior experience at a high-growth digital assets company or DeFi protocol — ideally one handling stablecoin issuance, lending, or RWAs.
  • Experience with security tooling and audit workflows for EVM and non-EVM chains (Solana and others).
  • AI-curious and fluent — uses modern AI tooling to move faster and ship better.
  • Open-source contributions to on-chain programs, SDKs, or developer tooling.
  • Degree in computer science or a related field.
Compensation:
  • Competitive compensation (base salary with equity/ token grant) commensurate with experience.
Benefits:
  • Global team and flexibility: Join a truly global team with the flexibility to work remotely or from one of our hubs in NYC or Berlin.
  • Health and wellness: Enjoy comprehensive healthcare insurance coverage as well as a wellbeing allowance and gym membership to support your physical and mental health.
  • Customizable IT setup: Tailor your workspace with access to top-notch IT equipment.
  • Professional development: Benefit from an annual development budget to enhance your skills and grow professionally, including opportunities to participate in conferences and on-site company events worldwide.
