What is the difference between Solana Smart Contract vs Solana Developer?

AspectSolana Smart ContractSolana Developer
CredentialsKnowledge of Rust, C, or C++Proficiency in Solana SDK, programming languages, and blockchain concepts
Work EnvironmentDeveloping, testing, and deploying smart contracts on Solana blockchainBuilding decentralized applications (dApps) and integrating smart contracts into projects
Industry UsageCreating on-chain logic and protocolsFull-stack development of Solana-based applications

Solana Smart Contract developers focus on writing and deploying on-chain code, while Solana Developers have a broader role that includes building applications that interact with these contracts. Both roles require blockchain knowledge, but the Smart Contract role is more specialized in on-chain logic.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a Solana Smart Contract Developer, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Solana Smart Contract Developer, you need a solid understanding of blockchain fundamentals, Rust programming, and smart contract architecture, often supported by a degree in computer science or related experience. Familiarity with Solana's development tools like Solana CLI, Anchor framework, and version control systems such as Git is typically required. Strong problem-solving abilities, attention to detail, and effective collaboration are vital soft skills in this field. These skills and qualifications ensure the creation of secure, efficient, and reliable decentralized applications on the Solana blockchain.

What are some common challenges faced when developing Solana smart contracts, and how can I prepare for them?

Developing Solana smart contracts (programs) often involves mastering Rust or C, understanding Solana's unique account model, and handling low-level memory management. Common challenges include ensuring security against exploits, managing transaction size limits, and working with limited debugging tools compared to more mature ecosystems. To prepare, familiarize yourself with Solana's documentation, participate in community forums, and practice building sample projects to gain confidence with the development workflow and best practices.

What are Solana smart contracts?

Solana smart contracts, often called 'programs,' are pieces of code deployed on the Solana blockchain that execute predefined actions when certain conditions are met. Unlike Ethereum, Solana smart contracts are typically written in Rust, C, or C++ and run on the Solana runtime. They enable developers to build decentralized applications (dApps) such as decentralized exchanges, NFT platforms, and lending protocols. Solana's focus on high throughput and low fees makes its smart contracts particularly suitable for applications requiring fast transactions.

Job description

M0 is the shared infrastructure where businesses launch their own branded stablecoins and financial institutions power them. Built on a common standard, every stablecoin on M0 is interoperable and liquid from day one - giving businesses programmable control over how money moves in their ecosystems, and giving financial institutions the most advanced issuance stack in the industry.
M0 is seeking a Solana Smart Contract Engineer who will play a fundamental role in shaping the future of our organization. As a Solana Smart Contract Engineer, you will architect and develop Solana programs in Rust and extend M0's existing issuance infrastructure with a focus on Token-2022. The ideal candidate is self-driven with strong ownership instincts and a bias for action, brings a computer science background or deep-rooted passion for tackling hard technical problems, and has substantial expertise across Web3 applications and infrastructure. You thrive on deadlines, communicate clearly across functions, and do your best work in a fast-paced environment.
Key Responsibilities
  • Architect and develop Solana programs in Rust, using Anchor and/or native frameworks.
  • Maintain and extend M0's existing issuance infrastructure, with a focus on Token-2022 extensions.
  • Optimize programs for compute unit usage, account size, and transaction packing.
  • Participate actively in code and design reviews.
  • Prepare codebases for third-party audits, including writing comprehensive tests, invariants, and fuzz harnesses.

Compensation:
  • Competitive compensation (base salary with equity/ token grant) commensurate with experience.

Benefits:
  • Global team and flexibility: Join a truly global team with the flexibility to work remotely or from one of our hubs in NYC or Berlin.
  • Health and wellness: Enjoy comprehensive healthcare insurance coverage as well as a wellbeing allowance and gym membership to support your physical and mental health.
  • Customizable IT setup: Tailor your workspace with access to top-notch IT equipment.
  • Professional development: Benefit from an annual development budget to enhance your skills and grow professionally, including opportunities to participate in conferences and on-site company events worldwide.

  • 5+ years of software engineering experience.
  • 2+ years writing production code in Rust.
  • Proven track record of deploying and maintaining complex Solana programs in production.
  • Solana-native: deep working knowledge of the account model, rent, transaction limits, versioned transactions, address lookup tables, etc.
  • Strong familiarity with the SPL Token program, Token-2022, and Associated Token Accounts.
  • Hands-on experience with the broader Solana DeFi ecosystem.
  • Experience with cross-chain messaging and bridging protocols - Wormhole NTT, LayerZero, Hyperlane, or Chainlink CCIP.
  • Basic familiarity with Solidity and EVM development, sufficient to reason about cross-chain message flows and equivalent contract behavior on both sides.

Nice to Have
  • Previous experience at a high-growth DeFi protocol, ideally one handling stablecoin issuance, lending, or RWAs.
  • Experience with Solana security tooling and auditing workflows.
  • Contributions to open-source Solana programs, SDKs, or developer tooling.
  • A degree in computer science or a related field.

Skills & Attributes
  • Proactive problem solver: You have a forward-thinking mindset, actively identifies opportunities for improvement, and takes decisive action to resolve issues efficiently and effectively.
  • Collaborative communicator: You foster relationships with finance experts, blockchain specialists, back-end developers and designers.
  • Team-oriented mindset: You are always ready to help colleagues within and outside your team and seek assistance when needed
  • Delivery-focused: You have a clear understanding of the objectives and goals and direct your efforts towards achieving them. You focus on the end result and are not distracted by distractions.
