What is a software volunteer?

Software Volunteers are individuals who contribute their time and technical skills to develop, maintain, or support software projects without monetary compensation. They often work with non-profit organizations, open-source communities, or social initiatives to help build or improve software that benefits the public or a specific cause. Software Volunteers may engage in activities such as coding, testing, documentation, training, or providing technical support. Their contributions are valuable in driving innovation, expanding access to technology, and supporting organizations with limited resources. Volunteering in software can also provide valuable experience and networking opportunities.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a software volunteer, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Software Volunteer, you need proficiency in programming languages, problem-solving abilities, and a willingness to learn, often backed by some formal or informal technical training. Familiarity with popular development tools like Git, code editors, and collaboration platforms such as GitHub is highly beneficial. Strong teamwork, communication, and adaptability are essential soft skills for collaborating effectively with diverse teams and responding to changing project needs. These skills and qualities enable volunteers to make meaningful contributions, adapt quickly, and support project success in fast-paced or resource-constrained environments.

What are some common challenges faced by software volunteers when working with non-profit organizations, and how can they be addressed?

Software volunteers often encounter challenges such as limited resources, varying levels of technical expertise among team members, and evolving project requirements within non-profit organizations. To address these obstacles, clear communication and regular check-ins are essential to align expectations and ensure progress. Adopting agile methodologies and focusing on building scalable, maintainable solutions can also help volunteers deliver meaningful impact despite constraints. Collaborating closely with non-technical stakeholders ensures that the developed software truly meets the organization's needs.

Job description

Inside Real Estate is a fast-growing, independently-owned real estate software firm that serves as a trusted technology partner to over 500,000 top brokerages, agents, and teams. Their branded portfolio, BoldTrail, includes BoldTrail (Front Office), BoldTrail BackOffice and BoldTrail Recruit, solutions that create a complete tech ecosystem for clients, and deliver seamless end-to-end operations to scale success at any level. With an accomplished leadership team and its talented staff, Inside Real Estate brings the resources, scale, and vision to deliver ongoing innovation and success to their growing customer base.
StreamsPlatform is our cutting-edge suite of new products for the real estate industry - and also a shared platform layer of data, services, and capabilities that feeds and powers other products across the business. We're looking for a Senior Software Engineer (SE III) who codes with AI tools daily, applies strong architectural judgment, and can take a vague concept and turn it into a well-designed, production-ready system. You'll ship product features and help build the underlying platform, working alongside a small, growing team (currently ~5 engineers) of senior-level peers in an AI-first engineering culture.
What You'll Do
  • Design and build backend services and APIs for both StreamsPlatform products and the shared platform layer that feeds other products, applying sound architecture principles (scalability, maintainability, clear boundaries) from day one.
  • Use AI coding tools as a core part of your daily workflow - accelerating implementation while maintaining high standards for code quality, correctness, and design.
  • Take ambiguous, early-stage product concepts and drive them to detailed, well-architected technical solutions.
  • Collaborate closely with a small team of senior engineers, product, and design to ship new features and products for the real estate industry.
  • Contribute to technical decisions around cloud infrastructure, service architecture, and system design as the platform and team scale.
  • Participate in code review, design review, and mentorship as part of a collaborative, high-caliber engineering group.

Required Qualifications
  • 7+ years of professional software engineering experience.
  • 1+ years of experience programming with AI coding tools/assistants (e.g., Claude Code, Copilot, Cursor, or similar) as part of your regular workflow.
  • Strong backend development experience - designing, building, and maintaining services and APIs.
  • Experience programming in Go.
  • Solid experience with cloud platforms and cloud-native application development.
  • Demonstrated strong software architecture skills - able to design clean, scalable, maintainable systems.
  • Proven ability to take vague or loosely defined concepts and drive them to detailed, well-engineered solutions.
  • Strong collaboration skills and ability to work effectively within a tight-knit engineering team.

Preferred Qualifications
  • Experience with AWS, Kubernetes, React (front-end), and/or building AI-powered SaaS applications.

Why Join Us
  • Work on StreamsPlatform, our newest and most cutting-edge set of products and platform for the real estate industry.
  • Join an AI-first engineering culture alongside a team of experienced, senior engineers, with high ownership from ambiguous concept through to shipped, production-quality software.

We offer a competitive total rewards package including:
  • Competitive salary
  • 3 Medical plans to choose from - 1 PPO and 2 HDHPs
  • 2 Dental plans to choose from
  • Vision
  • HSA - company-funded
  • FSAs - healthcare, limited purpose, dependent care
  • Short-Term Disability - company-paid
  • Long-Term Disability - company-paid
  • Basic Employee Life Insurance - company-paid
  • Voluntary Dependent Life Insurance
  • Voluntary Accident Insurance
  • Voluntary Critical Illness
  • Voluntary Hospital Indemnity
  • ID Protection
  • Pet Insurance
  • 401(k) Retirement Savings with company match
  • Paid PTO/Vacation/Sick Time
  • 11 company-recognized holidays
  • Company-paid Parental/Disability Leave

In addition, at IRE, we focus on driving top results providing:
  • Opportunities to grow within our company;
  • Potential to work in a remote setting;
