THE POSITION

The Intermediate Mechanical Engineer/Technologist contributes to the design, development and testing of mechanical products and components from concept through production. Working within a multidisciplinary design team, the successful candidate will collaborate with engineers, technologists and other technical team members to develop practical and manufacturable product designs. The role will independently complete mechanical design assignments, participate in hands-on testing in the onsite lab and work with other team members to coordinate and oversee larger or longer-term testing activities. This position requires sound technical judgment, practical problem-solving skills and the ability to work effectively across engineering, manufacturing and other cross-functional teams.

HOW YOU WILL BE MAKING AN IMPACT

  • Design and develop mechanical products, components and assemblies from concept through production.
  • Create and revise 3D models, detailed drawings and bills of materials using SolidWorks or similar CAD software.
  • Translate product requirements and technical specifications into practical mechanical designs.
  • Apply design for manufacturability and assembly principles to improve product quality, production efficiency, reliability and cost.
  • Prepare and maintain accurate engineering documentation and support controlled drawing, revision and design release processes.
  • Develop prototypes and support hands-on product testing, verification and validation activities.
  • Analyze test results, identify design issues and recommend practical improvements.
  • Participate in vibration and load analysis activities to evaluate product performance and design suitability.
  • Participate in design reviews, technical discussions and root-cause investigations.
  • Collaborate with Manufacturing, Quality, Supply Chain and other teams to resolve design and production issues.
  • Support the transition of products from engineering development to manufacturing and field implementation.
  • Provide technical support and guidance to junior team members when required.
  • Complete assigned engineering projects and deliverables with limited supervision.
  • Collaborate with engineers, technologists and other design team members to develop, review and improve mechanical product designs.
  • Participate in hands-on prototype, verification and product testing activities in the onsite engineering lab.
  • Work with engineering and other technical staff to plan, coordinate and monitor larger or longer-term product testing activities, ensuring results and issues are properly documented and communicated.

WHAT SKILLS AND EXPERIENCE YOU REQUIRE

  • A bachelor's degree in Mechanical Engineering or a diploma in Mechanical Engineering Technology from a recognized university or college.
  • Approximately seven years of relevant mechanical design, product development or related engineering technology experience.
  • Engineering candidates must be registered or eligible for registration with Engineers Geoscientists Manitoba. Technologist candidates should hold or be eligible for an applicable professional technologist designation.
  • Strong mechanical design experience, including the development of products, components and assemblies from concept through production.
  • Proficiency with SolidWorks or similar CAD software, including 3D modelling, complex assemblies and production-ready drawings.
  • Strong knowledge of geometric dimensioning and tolerancing, drafting standards and controlled engineering design release processes.
  • Demonstrated experience applying design for manufacturability and assembly principles.
  • Experience developing prototypes and supporting product verification, validation or hands-on testing activities.
  • Experience with mechatronic products, systems or components is an asset.
  • Experience designing plastic components and knowledge of applicable manufacturing processes is an asset.
  • Experience performing or supporting vibration and load analysis is an asset.
  • Experience working in a start-up, scale-up or similarly fast-changing environment is an asset.
  • Strong analytical thinking, technical judgment and practical problem-solving skills.
  • Strong communication and teamwork skills with the ability to collaborate effectively with engineering, manufacturing, customers and suppliers.
  • Proven ability to manage multiple priorities, work with limited supervision and meet project deadlines.
  • Willing and able to travel within Canada, the USA and internationally as required.
