Who will you be working with?

Bach-Simpson is the lead Event Recorder OEM in the North American Transit market. It designs, develops, and maintains various electronic equipment for trains. The monitoring team in this division is responsible for the Bach-Simpson monitoring products and projects.

How will you make a difference?

As the Specialist – Electrical Engineering, you will report to the Manager, Product (Test Equipment) and work with a team of talented engineers and software developers responsible for designing, developing, and delivering our industry-leading transit electronics solutions. You will work closely with cross-functional teams, including product management, operations, and customer support, to ensure our solutions meet the evolving needs of our customers.

In this role, you will be responsible for, but not limited to:

  • Perform all aspects of technical work to meet RAILS, ISO9001, CMMI and Wabtec Policy requirements as our customers and corporate demand.
  • Design, troubleshoot and maintain complex Software systems.
  • Drive process improvements across engineering workflows to enhance efficiency and productivity.
  • Support the setup, configuration, and maintenance of key engineering systems.
  • Assist in new concept design and early-stage product development
  • Basics in circuit theory and PCB design principles
  • Read and interpret PCB schematics.
  • Review documents and procedures for accuracy
  • Document process in a flow chart using Microsoft Visio
  • Contribute to automation and tooling through coding and scripting (e.g., C, C++, Python, VBA)
  • Knowledge of electronic and electrical systems design, programming and firmware development
  • Test and validate engineering processes and systems to ensure accuracy and reliability
  • Excellent communication (written & verbal) and interpersonal skills, with the ability to effectively engage with employees at all levels of the organization.

  • Bachelor of Engineering, with 5+ years of experience in Electrical and/or Software designs.
  • Work experience, preferably encompassing embedded systems, communications, and programming.
  • Solid understanding of multi-layer PCB design principles, display technologies, and hardware integration.
  • Strong board design experience, including schematic capture and PCB layout of analog, digital, and mixed-signal circuits
  • Experience supporting prototype board bring-up, hardware validation, and troubleshooting activities.
  • Proven ability to verify and assess hardware functionality throughout the development lifecycle.
  • Strong background in embedded software development and system integration, including microcontroller platforms such as PIC32.
  • Advanced proficiency in C/C++ with extensive experience developing and optimizing low-level device drivers.
  • In-depth knowledge of networking technologies, including Ethernet and the TCP/IP protocol suite.
  • Hands-on experience with debugging and test equipment, including JTAG/SWD debuggers, oscilloscopes, logic analyzers, and protocol analyzers.
  • Familiarity with industry-standard communication protocols such as SPI, I²C, UART, CAN, Ethernet, and USB.
  • Experience interfacing with a wide range of hardware components, including DSPs, microcontrollers, ADCs/DACs, amplifiers, sensors, memory devices, and communication modules.
  • Experience in regulatory compliance activities, including safety and EMC certification testing and maintenance of associated technical documentation.
  • Own end-of-life (EOL) activities, including component obsolescence monitoring, last-time-buy planning, identification and qualification of alternate components, and driving board revisions or redesigns as needed.
  • Support the transition of designs to manufacturing, including DFM/DFT reviews, test fixture support, and resolution of production issues
  • Skilled in developing and maintaining technical documentation, including firmware architecture documentation, interface control documents (ICDs), and design specifications.
  • Strong troubleshooting capabilities for diagnosing and resolving firmware, hardware, and system integration issues.
  • Experience using Git and other version control systems to manage software development and collaboration workflows.
  • Programming experience with Python, JavaScript, Visual Basic, etc.
  • Proficiency with MS Office Suite (Outlook, Word, Excel, PowerPoint, and Teams)
  • Able to Travel to customer site for design review meetings (10-25%).

The role may require occasional travel to customer sites, which may involve standing, observing small writing and labels, climbing, and wearing personal protective equipment (PPE) as necessary.

  • Ability to work at a lab bench performing hands-on testing, setup, and troubleshooting.

  • Ability to visually inspect hardware devices and test systems.
  • Ability to work in an electronics lab environment following ESD and safety protocols.
  • Ability to use hand tools (e.g., screwdrivers) for assembling and maintaining test setups.
  • Ability to connect disconnect various connectors on a daily basis as testing needs.
  • Have manual dexterity to be able to work with various hardware for testing purposes.

Our job titles may span more than one career level. The salary range for this role is between $70,000 to $95,000 annually. The actual salary offered to a candidate may be influenced by a variety of factors, such as: training, transferable skills, work experience, education, business needs, market demands, and work location. The base pay range is subject to change and may be modified in the future.
