What is a software test engineer?

A software test engineer conducts quality assurance tests on software to make sure programs are functioning properly. The three types of testing strategies are black box, where the tester is not familiar with the software, white box, where the tester is aware of the software’s internal structure, and gray box, which is a combination of the two. Responsibilities in this job include running diagnostic tests with a critical mindset, assessing the functionality, and reporting the findings.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a software test engineer, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Software Test Engineer, you need a solid understanding of software development life cycles, test methodologies, and proficiency in programming languages such as Python or Java, often supported by a degree in computer science or related fields. Familiarity with automation tools like Selenium, JUnit, or TestNG, and knowledge of bug tracking systems such as Jira are typically required. Attention to detail, analytical thinking, and effective communication set standout engineers apart by enabling thorough defect identification and clear reporting. These skills and qualities are crucial for ensuring software reliability, meeting quality standards, and facilitating smooth collaboration across development teams.

What are some common challenges faced by software test engineers when working with cross-functional development teams?

Software Test Engineers often encounter challenges such as aligning testing timelines with rapid development cycles, ensuring clear communication of bugs and requirements, and adapting to evolving project priorities. Collaborating closely with developers, product managers, and UX designers requires proactive communication and flexibility, especially when dealing with ambiguous requirements or shifting deadlines. To succeed, it's important to maintain detailed documentation, participate actively in agile ceremonies, and foster a collaborative attitude to resolve issues efficiently and ensure high-quality software releases.

Job Description
  • Full Time
  • Onsite/Hybrid Preferred

The Test Engineer plays a critical role in software validation by designing, executing, and assisting with the maintenance of test cases to ensure the system meets defined requirements, performs as intended, and is free of defects prior to deployments. This position is responsible for software verification and validation (V&V) activities, ensuring that enterprise systems meet functional performance, and compliance requirements – particularly for U.S. Department of Defense (DoD) programs. The Test Engineer will support formal and informal testing while ensuring the collection of Objective Quality Evidence (OQE) to support system certification and accreditation. The ideal candidate brings at least 2 years of relevant experience in software testing, validation and test automation within complex IT enterprise systems such as Product Lifecycle Management (PLM), Enterprise Resource Planning (ERP), or similar platforms in regulated settings – and possesses hands‑on experience developing and maintaining automated test scripts.

Duties & Responsibilities
  • Design, develop, and execute test cases to validate system functionality, data integrity, and end-to-end business processes.
  • Maintain and refine automated test scripts using approved automation tools (e.g., Eggplant, Selenium, Katalon, or equivalent automated testing tools).
  • Support end-to-end validation efforts across integrated systems, including PLM, ERP, and interface/data exchange processes.
  • Support in the coordination and completion of internal testing activities (e.g., smoke, system, functional and regression testing) to ensure timely development completion and quality delivery of software.
  • Ensure all testing activities produce appropriate OQE artifacts in support of DoD compliance requirements.
  • Identify, document, and track defects, working closely with development and functional teams to support resolution and retesting.
  • Analyze test results and provide clear, concise status updates and report to the Test Lead.
  • Ensure traceability between requirements, test cases, and defects to align with DoD validation requirements.
  • Assist in building and expanding the regression test suite to support ongoing releases and system changes.
  • Collaborate with cross-functional teams (e.g., QA, IT, business users) to ensure alignment of testing scope, data, and expected outcomes.
  • Contribute to the continuous improvement of testing processes, tools, and methodologies to increase efficiency and quality.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.
Required Qualifications
  • Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, Engineering, or a related technical field required; advanced degree, relevant internship experience, or equivalent hands‑on industry experience may be considered in lieu of traditional qualifications.
  • 2+ years of experience with test automation frameworks, scripting languages, and tools (e.g., Selenium, Katalon, Eggplant, Python, XML, JSON).
  • Experience with PLM platforms (e.g., Windchill, Teamcenter, Enovia) or other enterprise systems.
  • Strong working knowledge of test planning, execution, and documentation aligned with DoD standards.
  • Experience producing OQE artifacts to support system certification/accreditation or acceptance reviews.
  • Proficient with tools such as Microsoft Office, Jira, Confluence, and SharePoint.
  • Excellent communication skills, with the ability to interface effectively across technical and non-technical teams.
  • Currently holds an active U.S. national security clearance or be able to receive and maintain one.
Preferred Qualifications (Not Required)
  • Familiarity with DoD or federal system development lifecycle (SDLC) processes and compliance requirements.
  • Knowledge of DoD software documentation standards, including SDD, IDD, SDP, ICD, and CDRL requirements.
  • Understanding of RMF, ATO, and Cybersecurity Testing/Validation (e.g., STIG compliance).
  • Exposure to Model-Based Systems Engineering (MBSE) and Model-Based Testing (MBT) practices.
  • Experience in Agile or hybrid Agile/Waterfall environments, and use of tools like Zephyr, TestRail, or qTest.
  • Security+ or other DoD 8570-compliant certification preferred.
Physical Requirements
  • Prolonged periods sitting at a desk and working on a computer.
  • Must be able to lift up to 15 pounds at times.
  • This position is hybrid located in St. Paul, MN.
  • Fully remote candidates may be considered with increased expectation for travel.
  • This position may require the ability to travel up to 5%.

Hybrid work arrangements are strongly preferred for this role to support regular in-person collaboration with program and project teams. Fully remote candidates may still be considered; however, remote employees should expect increased travel requirements to support onsite team engagement. Employees may telework on designated days or as needed with supervisor approval, provided they maintain established communication expectations and effectively meet job responsibilities. Travel may be required 1–2 times per month to customer sites, subcontractor locations, and other company offices.

Clearance Requirements

Some positions will require access to U.S. National Security information. Positions that require this access will be required to receive and maintain a U.S. government personnel security clearance (PCL). In order to qualify for this position, the candidate must be a U.S. Citizen and either currently possess this National Security eligibility or be able to complete the investigation application process with a favorable determination and maintain that eligibility throughout their employment.
