Software Support Manager information

What does a software support manager do?

A Software Support Manager oversees the support team responsible for assisting clients and end-users with software-related issues. They manage daily operations, ensure timely resolution of technical problems, and work to improve customer satisfaction. The role often involves coordinating with development teams to address bugs, implementing support processes, and training staff. Software Support Managers also analyze support metrics to optimize performance and may assist in developing documentation or training materials.

How does a software support manager typically balance technical troubleshooting with team leadership responsibilities?

A Software Support Manager often divides their time between overseeing the support team’s daily operations and directly handling complex technical issues that require advanced expertise. While they may step in to resolve escalated customer problems, much of their role involves mentoring support staff, coordinating training sessions, monitoring performance metrics, and optimizing support processes. Effective managers also collaborate closely with development teams to communicate recurring software issues and recommend improvements, ensuring both customer satisfaction and continuous product enhancement.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a software support manager, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Software Support Manager, you need strong technical knowledge of software products, troubleshooting expertise, and experience in customer service or IT support, often backed by a relevant degree. Familiarity with ticketing systems (like Zendesk or Jira), CRM platforms, and ITIL or similar certifications is typically required. Exceptional leadership, communication, and problem-solving skills set outstanding managers apart by enabling them to guide teams and resolve client issues effectively. These competencies are crucial for ensuring timely customer support, maintaining high client satisfaction, and leading a productive support team.

Job description

Software Support Engineer – Distributed 3D Simulation

Business Unit: MAK Technologies, Inc.

Location: Cambridge, MA

What YOU will do:

MAK Technologies is currently seeking a Software Support Engineer to support our extensive customer base and distributor network around the world.

MAK Technologies is a global leader in modeling and simulation software that links, simulates and visualizes virtual worlds in networked synthetic environments. Continuing a tradition that stretches back almost three decades, our tools are used by the world’s top organizations for training, experimentation, mission rehearsal, research and development, and virtual prototyping.

The Software Support Engineer will be a full-time member of the VR-Forces engineering team within the MAK Product Division. This customer-facing role is responsible for managing and responding to technical support requests, working directly with customers on a daily basis, and occasionally delivering product training. The engineer will also collaborate closely with all parts of the company including engineering, quality assurance, and sales.

Because MAK customers are typically engineers, support questions are often technical and design-oriented. Much of the work involves helping customers use the product’s C++ APIs, design plugins, and build extensions that meet specific project requirements. The ideal candidate should therefore have strong software engineering judgment, a solid understanding of software architecture and design principles, and the ability to reason through complex technical problems. While deep C++ expertise is valuable, the most important requirement is the ability to understand C++ code, learn quickly, and apply sound engineering principles when helping customers solve real-world integration and development challenges.

The position allows for a flexible schedule however the candidate must located in the Boston area and able to work in the office three days a week. The job requires occasional (two to three weeks) of travel a year to customer sites or conferences. The candidate must be authorized to work without employer support in the US and eligible to obtain a Secret Clearence.

What YOU need:Required:
  • Object-oriented C++ experience
  • Strong problem-solving abilities
  • Basic knowledge of computer networking
  • Bachelor’s Degree in Computer Science or equivalent related experience
  • Strong verbal and written communication skills
  • Familiarity with developing in both Windows and Linux
  • Must be authorized to work in the US and eligible to obtain a Secret clearance
  • Experience working directly with customers in a sales engineering role
Preferred:
  • 3D graphics rendering technology
  • Game engines or simulation frameworks
  • Virtual reality, mixed reality, or augmented reality systems
  • Geospatial systems, web-mapping technology, or terrain databases
  • High-performance multi-threaded applications and cloud deployment
  • Distributed simulation networking protocols such as HLA, DIS, or DDS
YOU get more than Just compensation with US:
