Software Leadership information

What is software leadership?

Software leadership refers to the practice of guiding and managing teams involved in the development, deployment, and maintenance of software projects. Software leaders, such as engineering managers or technical leads, are responsible for aligning team efforts with business goals, fostering collaboration, and supporting the professional growth of their team members. They also ensure that software projects are delivered on time, meet quality standards, and leverage best practices in technology. Strong software leadership is crucial for building high-performing teams and successful software products.

What is the difference between Software Leadership vs Software Engineering Manager?

AspectSoftware LeadershipSoftware Engineering Manager
Primary FocusStrategic vision, team guidance, and organizational goalsProject delivery, team management, and technical oversight
Required CredentialsExtensive technical experience, leadership skills, often advanced degreesTechnical background, management experience, often certifications like PMP or Scrum
Work EnvironmentExecutive meetings, strategic planning, cross-team collaborationTeam supervision, project planning, code reviews
Industry UsageUsed in organizations emphasizing strategic tech directionCommon in tech companies managing development teams

Software Leadership focuses on setting strategic direction and guiding multiple teams, while Software Engineering Managers handle day-to-day project management and team oversight. Both roles require technical expertise, but Software Leadership emphasizes vision and organizational impact, whereas Engineering Managers focus on project execution and team performance.

What are some common challenges faced by professionals in software leadership roles, and how can they effectively address them?

Software leaders often encounter challenges such as balancing technical decision-making with people management, aligning team goals with organizational objectives, and managing distributed or cross-functional teams. To address these challenges, successful leaders focus on clear communication, foster a collaborative culture, and invest in ongoing professional development for both themselves and their teams. Regular feedback sessions, prioritizing mentorship, and staying up-to-date with industry best practices can help leaders navigate these complexities effectively.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive in software leadership?

To thrive in Software Leadership, you need a strong background in software development, project management, and team leadership, often supported by a degree in computer science or related fields. Familiarity with agile methodologies, version control systems (like Git), and project management tools (such as Jira or Trello) is typically required. Outstanding communication, strategic thinking, and the ability to mentor and motivate teams are key soft skills for this role. These skills and qualities are crucial for delivering high-quality software, fostering innovation, and ensuring team productivity within fast-paced tech environments.

What skills do you need to be a software team leader?

A software team leader needs strong technical skills in programming and software development, along with leadership abilities such as communication, team management, and problem-solving. Knowledge of project management methodologies like Agile or Scrum and proficiency with collaboration tools are also important. Effective decision-making and the ability to motivate team members are essential for success in this role.

Job description

Requisition Id 16849
Overview:
At Oak Ridge National Laboratory (ORNL), our researchers are advancing some of the nation's most complex scientific and engineering challenges-from advanced manufacturing and artificial intelligence to quantum computing, nuclear science, and high-performance computing. We are seeking an Export Control Analyst to support these mission-critical activities by providing export control guidance and technical regulatory analysis across a broad range of emerging and established technologies. This position offers an exceptional opportunity for an early-career professional to develop expertise in export controls while working alongside world-class researchers, engineers, and program managers supporting one of the nation's most diverse research portfolios. The role is responsible for evaluating technologies and research activities, preparing technical jurisdiction and classification determinations, supporting export licensing activities, and ensuring compliance with applicable U.S. export control regulations and Department of Energy (DOE) directives. The successful candidate will help enable international collaboration while protecting national security and advancing ORNL's scientific mission. This position resides in the Export Control Group within the Laboratory Protection Division of the Facilities & Operations Directorate.
Major Duties/Responsibilities:
  • Evaluating and analyzing ORNL programs and initiatives, facilities, Cooperative Research and Development Agreements, Strategic Partnership Agreements, Intellectual Property Reviews, Software, Leadership Computing Projects, specifications, technology assessments for foreign visits and assignments, foreign travel, and other areas.
  • Reviewing applicable export control laws and regulations and the associated export control requirements of primary government agencies such as the Department of Commerce, Department of State, Department of Energy, Treasury Department, and the Nuclear Regulatory Commission.
  • Evaluating technologies, item classification, jurisdiction, end use (application) and end users (recipients) and issue export control determinations.
  • Interfacing and working with Principal Investigators (scientists/engineers) to assess technology and assist with navigating export control requirements.
  • Staying current with the changing environment of export control laws, regulations, technologies and programs.
  • Delivering ORNL's mission by aligning behaviors, priorities, and interactions with our core values of Impact, Integrity, Teamwork, Safety, and Service. Promoting equal opportunity by fostering a respectful workplace - in how we treat one another, work together, and measure success.

Basic Qualifications:
  • BS/BA degree in physical sciences, computer science, engineering, international relations, business, or another relevant technical or analytical discipline.
  • Candidates with experience in compliance, engineering, scientific research, manufacturing, logistics, contracting, or other technical disciplines involving regulatory compliance are encouraged to apply. Two or more years of professional experience in export controls or a related field are preferred.
  • Demonstrated ability to analyze technical information and apply regulatory requirements to real-world situations.
  • Willingness to travel occasionally for training, professional development, and meetings with federal agencies or external partners.

Preferred Qualifications:
  • Demonstrated interest or experience working with emerging technologies and evaluating technical activities within the context of U.S. export control and related regulations.
  • Ability to learn and apply complex regulatory requirements while working across diverse scientific, engineering, and technical disciplines.
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills with the ability to clearly explain regulatory requirements to researchers, engineers, and other technical staff.
  • Experience collaborating with multidisciplinary teams and building productive working relationships with technical and administrative stakeholders.
  • Advanced degree or additional relevant professional experience is desirable. More specifically, nuclear degree/industry experience would be highly desirable.
  • Willingness to review scientific publications, technical reports, presentations, and other research products outside one's primary area of expertise.
  • Self-motivated professional with the ability to work independently, manage multiple priorities, and contribute effectively within a collaborative team environment.
  • Strong interpersonal and organizational skills, including the ability to communicate compliance positions, negotiate regulatory issues, and assist in developing and delivering compliance training.
  • Demonstrated ability to work with minimal administrative support while effectively managing assigned responsibilities.

Special Requirements:
  • Q clearance: This position requires the ability to obtain and maintain a clearance from the Department of Energy. As such, this position is a Workplace Substance Abuse (WSAP) testing designated position. WSAP positions require passing a pre-placement drug test and participation in an ongoing random drug testing program.
  • Visa Sponsorship: Visa sponsorship is not available for this position.
