Software Leadership information

What is software leadership?

Software leadership refers to the practice of guiding and managing teams involved in the development, deployment, and maintenance of software projects. Software leaders, such as engineering managers or technical leads, are responsible for aligning team efforts with business goals, fostering collaboration, and supporting the professional growth of their team members. They also ensure that software projects are delivered on time, meet quality standards, and leverage best practices in technology. Strong software leadership is crucial for building high-performing teams and successful software products.

What is the difference between Software Leadership vs Software Engineering Manager?

AspectSoftware LeadershipSoftware Engineering Manager
Primary FocusStrategic vision, team guidance, and organizational goalsProject delivery, team management, and technical oversight
Required CredentialsExtensive technical experience, leadership skills, often advanced degreesTechnical background, management experience, often certifications like PMP or Scrum
Work EnvironmentExecutive meetings, strategic planning, cross-team collaborationTeam supervision, project planning, code reviews
Industry UsageUsed in organizations emphasizing strategic tech directionCommon in tech companies managing development teams

Software Leadership focuses on setting strategic direction and guiding multiple teams, while Software Engineering Managers handle day-to-day project management and team oversight. Both roles require technical expertise, but Software Leadership emphasizes vision and organizational impact, whereas Engineering Managers focus on project execution and team performance.

What are some common challenges faced by professionals in software leadership roles, and how can they effectively address them?

Software leaders often encounter challenges such as balancing technical decision-making with people management, aligning team goals with organizational objectives, and managing distributed or cross-functional teams. To address these challenges, successful leaders focus on clear communication, foster a collaborative culture, and invest in ongoing professional development for both themselves and their teams. Regular feedback sessions, prioritizing mentorship, and staying up-to-date with industry best practices can help leaders navigate these complexities effectively.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive in software leadership?

To thrive in Software Leadership, you need a strong background in software development, project management, and team leadership, often supported by a degree in computer science or related fields. Familiarity with agile methodologies, version control systems (like Git), and project management tools (such as Jira or Trello) is typically required. Outstanding communication, strategic thinking, and the ability to mentor and motivate teams are key soft skills for this role. These skills and qualities are crucial for delivering high-quality software, fostering innovation, and ensuring team productivity within fast-paced tech environments.

What skills do you need to be a software team leader?

A software team leader needs strong technical skills in programming and software development, along with leadership abilities such as communication, team management, and problem-solving. Knowledge of project management methodologies like Agile or Scrum and proficiency with collaboration tools are also important. Effective decision-making and the ability to motivate team members are essential for success in this role.

Overview:

Build a fulfilling career with Mitchell Tax Software!

Mitchell Tax Software is a small business located at 9827 Cogdill Rd, Suite 4, Knoxville, TN (behind Lakewood Capital Group). Mitchell provides tax preparation software to tax professionals throughout the United States, and services that software with industry-leading customer support. This position is for a Sales & Support Account Specialist – you’ll be talking with tax preparers across the US, explaining the benefits of our software (sales), delivering training calls (helping users do software demos), and providing customer support (answer questions and helping users with their software). No tax experience required – just a desire to learn and help people. Sales experience is a definite plus.

Absolute Requirements – extremely strong MS Office skills, Typing/Word Processing, & Windows computer skills. *Please don’t apply if you’re not extremely proficient with a Microsoft Windows-based computer, haven’t used MS Office, or can’t type at least 35-60 words per minute (WPM). See all the “Top Requirements” and “Other Requirements” below to ensure we’re a mutual fit.

Compensation:

$26 per hour, with some required overtime, some being on-call, & some Saturdays required around January through March (see “Top Requirements” below).

This is a role where you can grow and steadily increase your duties and compensation over time.

Note – no tax experience is required, just a desire to learn and a desire to make sales and help our clients. Please see the “Top Requirements” and “Other Requirements” below.

This is a career with opportunity for growth – we’re in it for the long-haul, and we want to you be in it with us! You don’t need to know anything about taxes, but you do need to have good people skills, great computer skills – and most importantly, a desire to learn. Sales experience is a huge plus, but not required.

Job Location:

On-site, at our office in Knoxville Tennessee at 9827 Cogdill Rd, Suite 4, Knoxville, TN 37932 – we’re on the back-side of the building (behind Lakewood Capital Group – they’re in the front).

This is a career with opportunity for growth over time – we want you growing here at Mitchell, and increasing your duties and compensation over time.

Job Duties:

  • Making customer sales – informing potential clients about the tax software, asking potential clients questions to determine if our software is a good fit, selling prospects on the benefits of our software, and scheduling online demo/training sessions.
  • Taking inbound and outbound phone calls and chatting with potential clients.
  • Training clients on the tax software – delivering remote training sessions to clients across the US.
  • Navigating the tax software on a daily basis – to deliver demos, trainings, settings calls, troubleshooting, and for day-to-day setup type tasks.
  • Digital marketing efforts – using Facebook and other online tools to reach tax preparers.
  • Using Microsoft Excel for data entry and lookup tasks, writing documents in Microsoft Word, using Microsoft Outlook, and many other computer tasks.
  • Customer service/support – helping our clients with any issues that arise, assisting them through the problem(s).
  • Co-worker support – helping your co-workers with their tasks as a team.

Top Requirements:

· Some Overtime is Required – You’re not afraid to work overtime, and you embrace it. You put forth extra effort on a daily basis because you want to, and you constantly ask what more you can do to help. *Please don’t apply if you can’t work some overtime (generally, overtime isn’t required most weeks during the year, but during late summer to late winter (July-February) it may be needed – usually not more than a few days a week, and usually not more than an hour or so at a time).

· ~3 Months of Saturdays – In addition to regular overtime, during tax season, there are approximately 3 months each year where Saturdays may be required (around January – March). We try to rotate these as a team – you most likely won’t be needed every single Saturday in January-March, just a few times each month, but you’ll need to be available to be scheduled. You will receive extra compensation for working these Saturdays (in addition to overtime). *Please don’t apply if you can’t work most Saturdays during core tax season (January through March).

· On-Call Periodically – There will be times where you’ll be expected to carry a phone after hours (no calls will ring through after 8pm). We rotate being on call as a team, so you won’t always be on call, but you will be on call periodically. Most of the time we don’t get any calls after-hours. You’ll be compensated for being on call – you’ll be compensated for simply having the phone, as well as receiving a bonus for any phone calls you receive. After-hours phone calls aren’t frequent during non-peak season (April to September), usually only 0-3 (zero to three) calls per week, and during this time we typically try to keep the calls as short as possible (a few minutes), answering quick questions and then deferring the client/caller to call back the next business day if they need longer help – these calls are just a courtesy to our clients. However, during peak season (October through March), calls may be more frequent and last longer. Again, you’ll be fully compensated for being on call, along with per-call bonuses, and we rotate being on-call as a team. *Please don’t apply if you can’t be on call periodically (sometimes often) as a rotating team-member, M-F, and some Saturdays/Sundays.

· Typing Skills (35-60 WPM) – quick typing/word processing skills, at least 35-60 WPM. *Please don’t apply if you can’t type at least 35 to 60 words per minute (WPM).

· Excellent Microsoft Windows computer skills – ability to quickly navigate a PC/Windows computer with ease, being familiar with computer terminology – task bar, window, control panel, desktop, etc., including years of experience actively using a PC computer in your everyday work & personal life (using a computer should be second-nature). *Please don’t apply if you’re not extremely proficient with a Microsoft Windows-based computer.

· Proficiency with the MS Office suite – Microsoft Word, Microsoft Excel, Microsoft Outlook, PowerPoint, etc. *Please don’t apply if you don’t have experience with the MS Office suite.

· You Love Making Money & Working – you’re not afraid to put in the extra hours and effort, knowing your income/rate and responsibilities will grow over time. You constantly ask what more you can do, and if anything else is needed to be done before heading out each day. And you’re shown that you’re valued (in the form of money). *Please don’t apply if you don’t like money.

Other Requirements:

· You Enjoy being on the phone – you’re excellent on the phone and enjoy talking with people – sales discussions, and in helping people.

· Excellent writing skills – good grammar, punctuation, email drafting ability, etc.

· Sales/Selling potential – you have the ability and desire to learn sales.

· Ability to learn – you love learning new skills, and don’t get frustrated easily. You want to learn the software and become an expert, and you have the desire to deliver training sessions to clients and empower them.

· You think you’ll love doing real-time demos, trainings, and sessions with clients on the computer.

· You have prior experience working in some sort of an office and/or business setting (or any sort of customer service or sales position where you used a computer extensively).

· The desire to help people – our clients and your co-workers, striving to go above-and-beyond for others.

· Excellent people skills – the ability to carry-on a conversation, and make people smile.

· Desire to excel at your job and grow – the desire to get rewarded for your efforts.

· You want this – you want a long-term job where you’re willing to give 110% and put in the hours, dedication, blood, and sweat (no tears) if it means being recognized & rewarded for your hard work.

Preferred but not required:

· Sales experience – not required, but preferred.

· Customer service experience (Customer Representative) – not necessary, as long as you have excellent computer skills (Microsoft Windows), excellent MS Office skills, excellent people skills, have worked in an office/business setting, and you have a strong desire to help others, and get rewarded for going above & beyond.

Not required:

· No tax experience necessary. You do not need to know anything about taxes or tax preparation – our function is to assist our tax preparer clients on how to use the software – they already know how to prepare taxes – that won’t be your role. You will be trained on tax topics you’ll need to know, but the focus of the job is explaining the benefits of our software to prospects (sales) and helping the clients use the software (support). As long as you’re eager to learn, and have all the requirements listed above, you’ll do just fine.

If you’re extremely skilled on a Windows PC (and Microsoft Office), enjoy being on the phone talking with customers, are eager to learn new skills, and be part of a growing business, then this job is for you. It will be extremely fast-paced & busy at times, extremely slow at others – but most of all it will be rewarding – we want you to enjoy your career and enjoy time-spent with your co-workers here at Mitchell Tax Software. We’re all friends and family at Mitchell and we hope you can join us! If you think you’re up to the challenge, please apply!

$26/hour, with some required overtime, some being on-call, & some Saturdays required around January through March (see “Top Requirements” above).

Please check all the requirements (“Top Requirements” & “Other Requirements”) before applying, to ensure we’re a mutual fit.
