Job description

Position Summary
The EHS Intern will gain hands-on experience in occupational safety within a dynamic manufacturing environment during a summer internship program. This role is designed to support the EHS team in enhancing workplace safety culture, improving compliance processes, and driving engagement in safety initiatives. The intern will take on meaningful projects that contribute to both professional development and organizational safety goals while working alongside line-level employees and floor leadership.
This position will support the execution of Environmental Health amp; Safety programs through participation in safety inspections, documentation improvement projects, and collaboration with operations, maintenance, and leadership teams. The intern will assist with the development and completion of Job Hazard Analyses (JHAs), standard operating procedures (SOPs), and other safety documentation used to identify and control workplace hazards.
The internship may also include participation in broader Environmental Health amp; Safety improvement initiatives aligned with the intern’s academic background and organizational priorities. These may include environmental program development, operational documentation improvements, safety analytics, training development, or other EHS-related improvement projects.
Responsibilities
The intern will work on a variety of safety-related initiatives, including:
Routine Safety Functions:
  • Conducting structured safety walkthroughs to identify and address potential hazards and improvement opportunities.
  • Participating in behavioral safety observations and documenting findings.
  • Assisting with employee onboarding and safety training, reinforcing company safety policies and procedures.
  • Supporting incident and near-miss documentation and assisting with root cause investigation activities.
  • Assisting with corrective action tracking related to safety inspections and incident investigations.
Process Improvement amp; Compliance:
  • Digitizing, updating, and organizing safety files to ensure documentation aligns with regulatory and company standards.
  • Assisting with the development, review, and completion of Job Hazard Analyses (JHAs), standard operating procedures (SOPs), and other operational safety documentation.
  • Reviewing and improving Lockout/Tagout (LOTO) procedures for enhanced safety in equipment maintenance.
  • Supporting EHS documentation control and regulatory recordkeeping processes.
  • Assisting with safety audit preparation and compliance verification activities.
  • Assisting with the development and improvement of EHS program elements such as environmental initiatives, operational documentation, training materials, or safety data tracking.
Engagement amp; Culture Initiatives:
  • Collaborating with floor leadership and employees to increase participation in the Safety Committee and enhance overall safety engagement.
  • Assisting in the development of safety communication strategies, including training materials, toolbox talks, and digital resources.
  • Supporting safety engagement initiatives and recognition programs that promote employee involvement in workplace safety.
Collaborative Projects:
  • Working with the EHS team and other departmental interns on cross-functional improvement projects.
  • Assisting the EHS team with data collection and analysis related to safety observations, training compliance, and safety program performance.
  • Presenting project findings or recommendations to EHS leadership at the conclusion of the internship.
Learning amp; Development Opportunities
  • Exposure to OSHA regulations and compliance requirements in a real-world setting.
  • Experience conducting hazard assessments, safety inspections, and risk evaluations.
  • Exposure to incident investigation processes and corrective action management.
  • Training in SafetyChain software and exposure to digital safety management systems.
  • Opportunity to develop leadership and communication skills through direct engagement with employees and committees.
  • Hands-on experience supporting the implementation of workplace safety programs in a food manufacturing environment.

Qualifications
  • Current enrollment in a college or university program related to Occupational Safety amp; Health, Environmental Science, Industrial Engineering, Environmental Studies, Business, Data Analytics, Education, or other related disciplines.
  • Strong attention to detail and organizational skills.
  • Effective communication skills for working with employees at all levels, including floor leadership.
  • Ability to work independently and take initiative on projects.
  • Ability to work in a fast-paced manufacturing environment.
  • Bilingual skills in Spanish or Malayalam preferred
Physical Demands and Work Environment:
Work is performed in both manufacturing and office environments. The intern will frequently walk production floors, interact with employees, and observe manufacturing processes.
The noise level in the work environment is usually moderate to high in production areas. The work environment characteristics described here are representative of those encountered while performing the essential functions of this position.
The intern must be able to stand and walk for extended periods, occasionally lift up to 50 pounds, and wear required personal protective equipment (PPE) while in production areas. Basic computer skills are required, including proficiency in Microsoft Word and Excel.
