What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a Software-in-the-Loop (SiL) Engineer, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Software-in-the-Loop (SiL) Engineer, you need expertise in embedded software development, simulation methodologies, and a strong background in computer science or engineering. Familiarity with tools like MATLAB/Simulink, Python, C/C++, and version control systems, as well as experience with simulation frameworks, is typically required. Strong analytical thinking, problem-solving abilities, and effective communication are crucial soft skills in this role. These competencies ensure accurate simulation, robust software validation, and effective collaboration with cross-functional teams, all of which are vital for developing reliable and safe embedded systems.

What are some common challenges faced by professionals working in Software In The Loop (SIL) testing, and how can they be addressed?

One common challenge in Software In The Loop (SIL) roles is ensuring the software model accurately represents real-world behavior, which can be complex due to hardware abstraction. Collaborating closely with hardware and algorithm teams helps clarify requirements and improve model fidelity. Additionally, managing large test suites and maintaining automated test environments can be demanding, so strong organizational skills and familiarity with continuous integration tools are valuable. Staying updated with simulation tools and regularly communicating with cross-functional teams can help overcome technical and coordination hurdles.

What is Software In The Loop (SIL)?

Software In The Loop (SIL) is a testing methodology used in software and system development, especially for embedded systems and control algorithms. It involves running the software code on a computer or simulation environment instead of the actual hardware. This allows engineers to verify and validate the functionality, performance, and integration of the software early in the development process. SIL testing helps identify and fix issues before deploying the code to real hardware, reducing development costs and time.

What is the difference between Software In The Loop vs Firmware Engineer?

AspectSoftware In The LoopFirmware Engineer
Primary FocusTesting and validating embedded software in simulation environmentsDeveloping, testing, and maintaining embedded firmware for hardware devices
Work EnvironmentSimulation platforms, development labs, virtual testing environmentsHardware labs, embedded systems, real-time hardware testing
Required SkillsProgramming (C/C++, Python), simulation tools, embedded systems knowledgeEmbedded C, hardware interfaces, real-time operating systems
Industry UsageAutomotive, aerospace, robotics, embedded systemsConsumer electronics, automotive, industrial equipment

Software In The Loop primarily involves testing embedded software in simulated environments, while Firmware Engineers focus on developing and maintaining firmware directly on hardware devices. Both roles require embedded systems knowledge but differ in their work environment and specific tasks.

Job description

Job Description

Our Mission:
At General Motors, our product teams are redefining mobility. Through a human-centered design process, we create vehicles and experiences that are designed not just to be seen, but to be felt. We're turning today's impossible into tomorrow's standard -from breakthrough hardware and battery systems to intuitive design, intelligent software, and next-generation safety and entertainment features.
Every day, our products move millions of people as we aim to make driving safer, smarter, and more connected, shaping the future of transportation on a global scale.

The Role

The Electrification Solutions New Markets (ESNM) organization within Vehicle Mechatronic Embedded Controls (VMEC) is seeking a Software Quality Assurance Engineer (SQAE) to help advance software built-in quality for GM's next generation of embedded controllers.

ESNM operates like a start-up within VMEC, focused on delivering battery management, inverter, and electric motor solutions for non-automotive and specialty automotive applications. This role will directly support GM's expansion into emerging markets such as autonomous manufacturing, mobile power generation systems, stationary energy storage systems, specialty vehicles, watercraft, and locomotives.

We are looking for a creative, highly motivated, and detail-oriented Software Quality Assurance Engineer who thrives in an agile environment and enjoys solving complex technical challenges. In this role, you will collaborate closely with product owners, developers, and test engineers using agile development methods, including Behavior-Driven Development (BDD), to define, create, automate, and execute software behavior tests that improve product quality from concept through integration.

What You'll Do

  • Develop and execute software verification strategies for battery management, inverter, and electric motor control systems

  • Create, maintain, and automate test cases, test scripts, and comprehensive test plans across multiple system levels

  • Perform integration and verification testing with minimal direction from lead engineers

  • Analyze software defects, determine root cause, validate fixes, and verify closure

  • Support design analysis and testing for software and system changes

  • Diagnose, debug, and resolve issues involving embedded software and related hardware systems

  • Execute tests in hardware-in-the-loop (HIL) and software-in-the-loop (SIL) environments

  • Identify software anomalies, missed requirements, and performance issues early in the development cycle

  • Build robust test automation solutions using tools such as Python and Jenkins

  • Interpret and apply functional, safety, and compliance requirements to test methods and setups

  • Partner with cross-functional teams to define effective acceptance criteria and meet program milestones

  • Serve as a key troubleshooter for product integration issues

  • Contribute to team knowledge sharing by documenting common issues, edge cases, and lessons learned

  • Actively participate in the scrum team as a subject matter expert supporting Solution in Context, Solution in Isolation, and System Testing

  • Support software package evaluations through data reviews, simulation behavior testing, automation development, and test plan execution

What You'll Need (Required Qualifications)

  • Bachelor's degree in Engineering or a related technical field

  • 2+ years of embedded software development or software test experience

  • 2+ years of Python scripting experience

  • Experience reading and debugging source code in C, C++, and/or Python

  • Experience with hardware-in-the-loop (HIL) testing, ideally using dSPACE ControlDesk, and/or software-in-the-loop (SIL) virtual test environments

What Will Give You a Competitive Edge (Preferred Qualifications)

  • Master's degree in Mechatronics, Software, Electrical, or Computer Engineering

  • Advanced proficiency in Python or similar scripting/programming languages such as C, C++, MATLAB, R, or VBA

  • Experience with Software Quality Assurance in embedded systems

  • Knowledge of Agile development and built-in quality practices such as BDD, TDD, or MBSE

  • Understanding of applied controls theory at the battery, inverter, or electric motor system level

  • Working knowledge of the embedded software development lifecycle

  • Experience with test automation, regression testing, and test procedure development

  • Experience working in an Agile environment

  • Experience with CppUTest

  • Experience with MATLAB, Simulink, and Stateflow

  • Familiarity with communication protocols and tools such as Automotive Ethernet, CAN, LIN, ETAS INCA, Intrepid NeoVI/VSpy, and Vector CANoe/CANape
