Software In The Loop information

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a Software-in-the-Loop (SiL) Engineer, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Software-in-the-Loop (SiL) Engineer, you need expertise in embedded software development, simulation methodologies, and a strong background in computer science or engineering. Familiarity with tools like MATLAB/Simulink, Python, C/C++, and version control systems, as well as experience with simulation frameworks, is typically required. Strong analytical thinking, problem-solving abilities, and effective communication are crucial soft skills in this role. These competencies ensure accurate simulation, robust software validation, and effective collaboration with cross-functional teams, all of which are vital for developing reliable and safe embedded systems.

What are some common challenges faced by professionals working in Software In The Loop (SIL) testing, and how can they be addressed?

One common challenge in Software In The Loop (SIL) roles is ensuring the software model accurately represents real-world behavior, which can be complex due to hardware abstraction. Collaborating closely with hardware and algorithm teams helps clarify requirements and improve model fidelity. Additionally, managing large test suites and maintaining automated test environments can be demanding, so strong organizational skills and familiarity with continuous integration tools are valuable. Staying updated with simulation tools and regularly communicating with cross-functional teams can help overcome technical and coordination hurdles.

What is Software In The Loop (SIL)?

Software In The Loop (SIL) is a testing methodology used in software and system development, especially for embedded systems and control algorithms. It involves running the software code on a computer or simulation environment instead of the actual hardware. This allows engineers to verify and validate the functionality, performance, and integration of the software early in the development process. SIL testing helps identify and fix issues before deploying the code to real hardware, reducing development costs and time.

What is the difference between Software In The Loop vs Firmware Engineer?

AspectSoftware In The LoopFirmware Engineer
Primary FocusTesting and validating embedded software in simulation environmentsDeveloping, testing, and maintaining embedded firmware for hardware devices
Work EnvironmentSimulation platforms, development labs, virtual testing environmentsHardware labs, embedded systems, real-time hardware testing
Required SkillsProgramming (C/C++, Python), simulation tools, embedded systems knowledgeEmbedded C, hardware interfaces, real-time operating systems
Industry UsageAutomotive, aerospace, robotics, embedded systemsConsumer electronics, automotive, industrial equipment

Software In The Loop primarily involves testing embedded software in simulated environments, while Firmware Engineers focus on developing and maintaining firmware directly on hardware devices. Both roles require embedded systems knowledge but differ in their work environment and specific tasks.

Nu is one of the largest digital financial platforms in the world, serving more than 135 million customers across Brazil, Mexico, and Colombia.

Guided by our mission to fight complexity and empower people, we are redefining financial services in Latin America and beyond - and this is still just the beginning of the purple future we're building.

We combine proprietary technology, data intelligence, and an efficient operating model to deliver financial products that are simple, accessible, and human.

Nu IPO'd in 2021 on the New York Stock Exchange (NYSE: NU), after being founded in 2013 and backed by leading global investors.

About the role

At Nubank, AI is not a bolt-on feature - it is existential to our next phase of growth. We are becoming an AI-native company, where intelligent systems don't just support our products; they define them.

As an AI Native Staff Software Engineer - Insurance, you will drive this transformation in our Insurance BU, which sits at the intersection of embedded insurance, Nu's most important customer surfaces, and our insurer partners.

You will be part of a lean, entrepreneurial team that delivers outsized business impact while protecting millions of customers, and is an early adopter of agentic engineering within Nubank.

This role combines high-impact technical leadership with hands-on building: you will design and operate production AI/agentic systems, set engineering standards, and help define what it means for Nubank to be truly AI-native.

You'll be responsible for
  • Designing, building and managing agentic workflows that power end-to-end delivery of customer-facing insurance features and journeys.
  • Setting and evolving standards for AI development, promoting reusable agents, commands and context structures that other teams can safely build on.
  • Establishing evaluation and monitoring practices for AI outputs, ensuring quality, robustness and human-in-the-loop integrity where needed.
  • Owning production AI systems: optimizing models and pipelines for latency, cost and reliability at scale, and building evaluation frameworks and benchmarks to catch regressions.
  • Ensuring observability for AI systems in production (tracing, logging, alerting) and driving a culture of operational excellence around AI services.
  • Cutting through ambiguity, surfacing trade-offs and aligning cross-functional teams (Product, Data, Security, Compliance, Insurance partners) around clear outcomes.
  • Embedding responsible and auditable AI in everything you ship, ensuring compliance with applicable regulations and internal risk standards.
  • Pioneering tooling, processes and culture that enable more Nubankers to safely contribute to AI-powered products over time (engineers and non-engineers).

We are looking for a person who hasRequired
  • Proven technical leadership as a senior / staff engineer delivering high-impact, large-scale software systems in production.
  • AI-first mindset with professional experience implementing LLMs, generative AI, agentic patterns and/or RAG systems in real-world products.
  • Strong full-stack thinking: ability to design maintainable codebases and APIs that bridge model inference / orchestration layers with user-facing surfaces.
  • Experience navigating ambiguous, cross-functional projects that require coordination across multiple business units and stakeholders.
  • Demonstrated strategic acumen, linking technical AI initiatives to business drivers such as operational efficiency, risk, and customer acquisition or engagement.
  • Solid understanding of prompt engineering, tool calling, context management, and agent loops, and ability to contribute to shared agent libraries and commands (not only consume them).
  • Track record of mentoring and uplifting peers on AI-native workflows, prompt engineering, and production ML/AI patterns.
  • Experience in fintech or other regulated industries (e.g., financial services, insurance, payments) or similarly complex domains.
  • Advanced English for daily collaboration in a global environment.
Nice to Have
  • Background in insurance or embedded insurance products.
  • Experience scaling products across international markets and languages.
  • Familiarity with Portuguese and/or Spanish to read or review customer-facing copy (optional).
  • Prior experience in AI-first startups or big-tech environments with strong AI/ML teams.

Location for this opportunity
  • Palo Alto, California (USA) OR Miami, Florida (USA) OR Toronto, Canada

Work Model for this Role
  • Hybrid 2-3 times/week: Our hybrid work model brings us to the office at least twice a week, on strategic days designed to maximize team connection and collaboration. For more details, visit  https://building.nubank.com/nu-hybrid-work-model/
