What is a software engineer?

Software Engineers are professionals who design, develop, test, and maintain computer software and systems. They use programming languages, engineering principles, and problem-solving skills to build applications, websites, or software solutions that meet specific needs. Software Engineers may work in a variety of industries, such as technology, finance, healthcare, or entertainment, collaborating with other team members to deliver functional and reliable software. Their role often involves analyzing user requirements, writing code, debugging errors, and continually improving software performance.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a software engineer, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Software Engineer, you need strong programming skills, problem-solving abilities, and a degree in computer science or a related field. Familiarity with coding languages (such as Python, Java, or C++), version control systems like Git, and knowledge of software development methodologies are typically required. Excellent teamwork, communication, and adaptability distinguish top performers in this role. These skills ensure efficient, high-quality software development that meets user needs and adapts to technological changes.

What are some common challenges software engineers face when collaborating on large development teams?

Software engineers working on large teams often encounter challenges with communication, code integration, and maintaining consistent coding standards. Coordinating across multiple developers can lead to merge conflicts and misunderstandings about project requirements or priorities. Adopting tools like version control systems, regular code reviews, and clear documentation helps mitigate these issues. Building strong collaboration skills and proactively seeking clarification are key to ensuring smooth teamwork and project success.

What is the difference between Software Engineer vs Software Developer?

AspectSoftware EngineerSoftware Developer
CredentialsBachelor's degree in CS or related field, certificationsBachelor's degree often preferred, certifications optional
Work EnvironmentDesigning, developing, testing, and maintaining software systemsWriting, coding, and implementing software applications
Industry UsageUsed across tech, finance, healthcare, and more for system-level rolesCommonly used in app and web development projects
Search IntentUnderstanding roles, responsibilities, and qualificationsLearning about coding, programming, and project work

While both roles involve software creation, Software Engineers typically focus on designing and architecting complex systems, whereas Software Developers mainly concentrate on coding and building specific applications. The roles often overlap, but the Engineer role may require broader system knowledge and design skills.

Are software engineers still in demand?

Yes, software engineers are in high demand across many industries due to ongoing digital transformation, the growth of cloud computing, and the need for software development, maintenance, and cybersecurity skills. The profession offers strong job stability, competitive salaries, and opportunities to work with various programming languages and tools.

Is 25 too late to become a software engineer?

Age is not a barrier to becoming a software engineer; many professionals start careers in tech in their mid-20s or later. Success depends on acquiring relevant skills, such as programming languages and problem-solving, often through coding bootcamps, online courses, or formal education. Employers value skills and experience over age, making it possible to enter the field at 25 or older.

Job description

Overview:
If you're looking for the stability of a profitable, growing company with the entrepreneurial spirit of a startup, we're hiring. SageSure, a leader in catastrophe-exposed property insurance, is seeking a Staff Software Engineer to help design, build, and evolve the software platforms that support our customers, partners, and business operations.
As a senior individual contributor, you will solve complex engineering problems, influence architectural and technical decisions, and help teams deliver scalable, reliable, and maintainable software. You will work closely with engineers, product managers, quality engineers, architects, and other cross-functional partners to enhance existing products and develop new capabilities
This role offers the opportunity to work with modern technologies, contribute across the software development lifecycle, and provide technical leadership within a collaborative, fully remote engineering organization. We invite you to join our shared commitment to building, shipping, learning, and continuously improving.
What you'd be doing:
  • Design, develop, test, and maintain scalable software applications, services, APIs, and platform capabilities.
  • Lead the technical design and implementation of solutions that support complex business requirements, high transaction volumes, and evolving customer needs.
  • Partner with product managers, quality engineers, architects, and other stakeholders to define requirements, evaluate technical approaches, and deliver high-quality solutions.
  • Establish and influence the technical direction of projects and initiatives, including architecture, design patterns, system integrations, and engineering standards.
  • Identify performance, scalability, reliability, and maintainability concerns and develop solutions that improve the health of our systems.
  • Deliver software through automated build, testing, deployment, and continuous delivery processes.
  • Ensure code quality through automated testing, code reviews, technical documentation, and adherence to software engineering best practices.
  • Communicate technical plans, architectural decisions, risks, and recommendations clearly to both technical and nontechnical stakeholders.
  • Provide technical guidance, mentorship, and coaching to other engineers through pairing, design discussions, and code reviews.
  • Collaborate across engineering teams to solve shared technical challenges, promote consistent practices, and advance broader platform capabilities.
  • Evaluate emerging technologies and development tools, including AI-enabled engineering tools, and identify opportunities to improve software delivery and developer effectiveness.

We're looking for someone who has:
  • Bachelor's degree in computer science, software engineering, information systems, or a related technical field, or equivalent practical experience.
  • 5+ years of professional software engineering experience, including experience independently solving complex technical problems and influencing technical direction.
  • Strong proficiency in at least one modern programming language, such as Java, TypeScript, Go, Python, C#, or a comparable language.
  • Experience designing, developing, integrating, and maintaining APIs, services, distributed systems, or modern software applications.
  • Experience working with databases and applying software design, architecture, testing, and development best practices.
  • Proven ability to provide technical leadership, evaluate tradeoffs, and influence the direction of complex, cross-functional initiatives.
  • Strong analytical and problem-solving skills, with the ability to bring structure and sound technical judgment to ambiguous challenges.
  • Strong communication and collaboration skills, including experience working effectively across remote and geographically dispersed teams.
  • Ability to travel occasionally, up to 15%, based on business needs

Highly preferred candidates also have:
  • Experience designing and maintaining microservices or distributed systems.
  • Experience with cloud platforms, containerization, and orchestration technologies, particularly AWS, Docker, or Kubernetes.
  • Experience with technologies commonly used within SageSure's software environment, including Java, Spring Boot, and Temporal.
  • Experience using AI-enabled development tools or agentic coding assistants, such as Claude Code, Cursor, or GitHub Copilot.
  • Experience in property and casualty insurance, Insurtech, Fintech, or another regulated industry.
