What is a software engineer?

Software Engineers are professionals who design, develop, test, and maintain computer software and systems. They use programming languages, engineering principles, and problem-solving skills to build applications, websites, or software solutions that meet specific needs. Software Engineers may work in a variety of industries, such as technology, finance, healthcare, or entertainment, collaborating with other team members to deliver functional and reliable software. Their role often involves analyzing user requirements, writing code, debugging errors, and continually improving software performance.

What are some common challenges software engineers face when collaborating on large development teams?

Software engineers working on large teams often encounter challenges with communication, code integration, and maintaining consistent coding standards. Coordinating across multiple developers can lead to merge conflicts and misunderstandings about project requirements or priorities. Adopting tools like version control systems, regular code reviews, and clear documentation helps mitigate these issues. Building strong collaboration skills and proactively seeking clarification are key to ensuring smooth teamwork and project success.

You will work across the full software development lifecycle, from low-level requirements through integration, testing, and certification under DO-178C standards. The position offers a mix of remote work and onsite collaboration in Cedar Rapids, Iowa, with the opportunity to work directly with cutting-edge cockpit display hardware and to contribute immediately to active flight display programs.

Responsibilities
  • Develop, modify, and maintain embedded software solutions for avionics display systems using Embedded C++.
  • Generate, review, and verify low-level software requirements in alignment with system and certification needs.
  • Perform software integration activities across multiple display applications and system-level requirements.
  • Execute unit testing, requirements-based testing, and software verification activities to ensure compliance with DO-178C.
  • Support DO-178C certification processes, including preparation and maintenance of related documentation.
  • Collaborate closely with systems, software, hardware, and test engineers throughout the full development lifecycle.
  • Troubleshoot software and system-level issues during integration and testing, both in lab environments and on actual hardware.
  • Participate in peer reviews, technical discussions, and engineering design reviews to improve software quality and design robustness.
  • Support onsite testing and validation efforts on avionics display hardware and integrated systems.
  • When onsite in Cedar Rapids, work directly with avionics display hardware and systems to support integration and testing activities.
  • Participate in hands-on troubleshooting and validation efforts with cross-functional engineering teams and program leadership.
  • When working remotely, support software integration across display system requirements and execute verification and certification activities.
  • Develop and maintain low-level requirements, test procedures, and related artifacts to support ongoing software lifecycle activities.
  • Support defect resolution by analyzing issues, implementing fixes, and validating corrective actions across the software stack.
Essential Skills

  • Experience working with display systems or similar integrated software-hardware platforms.
  • Ability to travel onsite to Cedar Rapids, Iowa as required by program needs.
  • Eligibility and willingness to work on U.S.-based aerospace programs that require U.S. citizenship.
Additional Skills & Qualifications
  • 5+ years of experience in Embedded C++ development, DO-178 programs, DAL A/B programs, low-level requirements, unit testing, and software integration is preferred.
  • Background in aerospace or avionics industry environments.
  • Experience supporting display systems, flight deck systems, or human-machine interface technologies.
  • Experience with requirements traceability and verification processes across the full software lifecycle.
  • Familiarity with software certification activities, including documentation and audit support under DO-178C.
  • Exposure to or previous support of major aerospace organizations or similar complex, safety-critical programs.

Work Environment

This role offers a hybrid work environment that combines remote flexibility with periodic onsite work in Cedar Rapids, Iowa. Engineers work with advanced avionics display hardware and integrated cockpit display systems, supporting both software and hardware integration efforts. The position emphasizes collaboration with cross-functional engineering teams and program leadership in a structured, process-driven aerospace environment. Travel to Cedar Rapids is required, particularly during the initial stages of the engagement. The current expectation is approximately four weeks onsite at the beginning, which may be structured as four consecutive weeks in the first month, one week per month for the first four months, or alternative schedules based on program needs and candidate availability. Candidates must remain open to additional onsite visits whenever the program requires in-person support. Approved business travel expenses, including airfare, hotel accommodations, rental vehicles when applicable, and associated travel costs, are covered.
