What is a software engineer?

Software Engineers are professionals who design, develop, test, and maintain computer software and systems. They use programming languages, engineering principles, and problem-solving skills to build applications, websites, or software solutions that meet specific needs. Software Engineers may work in a variety of industries, such as technology, finance, healthcare, or entertainment, collaborating with other team members to deliver functional and reliable software. Their role often involves analyzing user requirements, writing code, debugging errors, and continually improving software performance.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a software engineer, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Software Engineer, you need strong programming skills, problem-solving abilities, and a degree in computer science or a related field. Familiarity with coding languages (such as Python, Java, or C++), version control systems like Git, and knowledge of software development methodologies are typically required. Excellent teamwork, communication, and adaptability distinguish top performers in this role. These skills ensure efficient, high-quality software development that meets user needs and adapts to technological changes.

What are some common challenges software engineers face when collaborating on large development teams?

Software engineers working on large teams often encounter challenges with communication, code integration, and maintaining consistent coding standards. Coordinating across multiple developers can lead to merge conflicts and misunderstandings about project requirements or priorities. Adopting tools like version control systems, regular code reviews, and clear documentation helps mitigate these issues. Building strong collaboration skills and proactively seeking clarification are key to ensuring smooth teamwork and project success.

What is the difference between Software Engineer vs Software Developer?

AspectSoftware EngineerSoftware Developer
CredentialsBachelor's degree in CS or related field, certificationsBachelor's degree often preferred, certifications optional
Work EnvironmentDesigning, developing, testing, and maintaining software systemsWriting, coding, and implementing software applications
Industry UsageUsed across tech, finance, healthcare, and more for system-level rolesCommonly used in app and web development projects
Search IntentUnderstanding roles, responsibilities, and qualificationsLearning about coding, programming, and project work

While both roles involve software creation, Software Engineers typically focus on designing and architecting complex systems, whereas Software Developers mainly concentrate on coding and building specific applications. The roles often overlap, but the Engineer role may require broader system knowledge and design skills.

Are software engineers still in demand?

Yes, software engineers are in high demand across many industries due to ongoing digital transformation, the growth of cloud computing, and the need for software development, maintenance, and cybersecurity skills. The profession offers strong job stability, competitive salaries, and opportunities to work with various programming languages and tools.

Is 25 too late to become a software engineer?

Age is not a barrier to becoming a software engineer; many professionals start careers in tech in their mid-20s or later. Success depends on acquiring relevant skills, such as programming languages and problem-solving, often through coding bootcamps, online courses, or formal education. Employers value skills and experience over age, making it possible to enter the field at 25 or older.

Job description

Overview
Today, security research is slowed by fragmented tools, bespoke pipelines, and one-off infrastructure that doesn't scale, isn't reusable, and often isn't production-ready. PRISMA Research Fabric changes that by delivering the shared, Engine-level platform foundations that power AI-first, agent-assisted security research across the Microsoft Defender ecosystem.
We are building the fabric that connects data, models, inference, and agents into a cohesive platform-so researchers can focus on protection impact, not plumbing. Our systems enable fast, safe experimentation, human-led and agent-operated workflows, and a clear path from research to production, all while enforcing security, compliance, reliability, and scale by default.
What makes this team unique is leverage. Instead of building tools for a single product or scenario, we create reusable platform capabilities that are consumed across Defender research, investigation, and intelligence workflows. Every improvement we make multiplies across teams, products, and protections.
For engineers, PRISMA Fabric offers the chance to work on deep, foundational problems-distributed systems, data platforms, ML inference, and agent execution-at real-world scale. You'll be shaping up the infrastructure that enables the next generation of AI-driven security research and protections for millions of customers.
If you're excited about building platforms that matter, solving hard problems once instead of repeatedly, and enabling others to move faster through great engineering, PRISMA is where that impact happens.
Responsibilities
  • Develop, test, and maintain software components and services that support data processing, machine learning inference, model execution, and agent-based workflows.

  • Work with engineers, researchers, and product teams to understand requirements and implement software solutions.

  • Contribute to the design and implementation of features under the guidance of experienced engineers.

  • Write high-quality, maintainable, and well-tested code following engineering best practices.

  • Participate in debugging, troubleshooting, and resolving issues in development, test, and production environments.

  • Learn and apply principles of software reliability, security, scalability, and operational excellence.

  • Participate in code reviews and technical discussions to improve engineering quality and expand technical knowledge.

  • Contribute to service monitoring, testing, automation, and operational improvements.

  • Continuously learn new technologies, tools, and engineering practices related to cloud services, AI platforms, and distributed systems.

Qualifications
Required Qualifications:
  • Bachelor's Degree in Computer Science, or related technical discipline with proven experience coding in languages including, but not limited to, C, C++, C#, Java, JavaScript, or Python
  • OR equivalent experience.

Other Requirements:
  • Ability to meet Microsoft, customer and/or government security screening requirements are required for this role. These requirements include, but are not limited to the following specialized security screenings: Microsoft Cloud Background Check: This position will be required to pass the Microsoft background and Microsoft Cloud background check upon hire/transfer and every two years thereafter.

Preferred Qualifications
  • Experience through internships, academic projects, open-source contributions, or professional software development.

  • Programming experience in one or more languages such as C#, Java, Python, C++, or Go.

  • Understanding computer science fundamentals, including data structures, algorithms, object-oriented programming, and software design.

  • Familiarity with software development practices including source control, testing, debugging, and code reviews.

  • Reliable problem-solving, collaboration, and communication skills.

  • Demonstrated passion for learning and building software systems.

  • Experience through coursework, internships, or projects involving cloud platforms such as Azure, AWS, or GCP.

  • Familiarity with APIs, backend services, distributed systems, or microservice architecture.

  • Exposure to data processing, machine learning systems, or AI applications.

  • Understanding software reliability, monitoring, or operational best practices.

  • Interest in security, AI-driven systems, and large-scale platform engineering.

  • Experience contributing to team-based software projects.
