Job Summary
As a Software Engineer on the Digital Pharmacy team, you will help build and maintain applications that drive the patient experience across Walgreens' mobile app, website, and notification platforms.
Our team develops services that integrate with pharmacy systems-enabling patients to view prescription status, request refills, manage insurance, complete payments, and receive timely notifications via email, SMS, and push.
You will work in an Agile environment alongside product managers and fellow engineers to design, implement, and enhance features that directly impact patient experience and business outcomes. This role includes contributing to both new development and ongoing improvements across a range of systems, from straightforward enhancements to more complex service integrations.
Work Location & Expectations
This is a hybrid role based at the Walgreens Corporate Office in Deerfield, IL. Team members are expected to work onsite four days per week, with one day remote option.
Work visa sponsorship is not available for this role.
Job Responsibilities
  • Writes code that meets specifications. Develops software applications and tools.
  • Completes programming and performs testing and debugging applications
  • Develops software applications and tools using Agile development methodologies.
  • Participates actively in the design, architecture and build phases, to aim at producing high quality deliverables, working with existing architects where appropriate.
  • Participates in the evaluation of compatibility of programs with existing communications hardware and software features. Develops professional expertise, applies company policies and procedures to resolve a variety of issues.
  • Works on problems of moderate scope where analysis of situations or data requires a review of a variety of factors. Exercises judgment within defined procedures and practices to determine appropriate action.
  • Builds productive internal/external working relationships.
  • Receives general instructions on routine work, detailed instructions on new projects or assignments. Usually works with some supervision, conferring with superiors on unusual or complex matters
  • Demonstrates proficiency in several areas of the professional function.
  • Has working knowledge of programming languages important to the organization

External Basic Qualifications
  • Bachelor's degree and at least 2 years of experience in Engineering, Software Engineering or similar field OR a High School Diploma/GED and at least 4 years of experience in Engineering, Software Engineering or related field

Preferred Qualifications
  • Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Information Technology, or related field
  • 3+ years of experience working on digital applications
  • 2+ years of experience with deployment automation across IaaS and PaaS platforms
  • Proficient in Java / Spring Boot development
  • Experience with CI/CD pipelines for cloud deployments using Docker/containers
  • Experience working in an Agile environment
  • Experience identifying operational issues and implementing solutions
  • Good knowledge of Git workflows and repository management
  • Working knowledge of Kubernetes, microservices architecture, DevOps tools, and Linux environments
  • Experience developing web and/or mobile applications in Agile environments
  • Experience with full stack development (front-end and back-end)
  • Hands-on experience with modern UI frameworks (e.g., React) and front-end design patterns
  • Experience with MongoDB and distributed SQL databases (e.g., Oracle, MySQL)
  • Exposure to cloud platforms (Azure, AWS, Google Cloud, IBM, or Cloud Foundry)
  • Knowledge of software engineering best practices (code reviews, testing, build processes, etc.)
  • Experience building applications that consume JSON-based APIs
