What is a software engineer startup?

A Software Engineer Startup job involves developing, testing, and maintaining software in a fast-paced, early-stage company. Engineers in startups often wear multiple hats, working on both backend and frontend development, infrastructure, and sometimes even product decisions. The role requires adaptability, problem-solving skills, and the ability to work with limited resources. Unlike larger companies, startup engineers may need to prototype quickly, iterate based on user feedback, and contribute to the overall growth strategy. This position is ideal for those who enjoy dynamic environments and taking ownership of projects.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive in the software engineer startup position, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Software Engineer in a startup environment, you need solid programming skills, a problem-solving mindset, and a degree in computer science or related experience. Familiarity with agile methodologies, cloud platforms, version control (like Git), and rapid prototyping tools is highly valued, and startup engineers may also benefit from exposure to full-stack development. Adaptability, effective communication, and the ability to work independently in uncertain environments are standout soft skills. These competencies enable engineers to rapidly iterate on products, effectively collaborate across small teams, and contribute to the dynamic demands of a growing company.

What can I expect from the daily work environment as a software engineer at a startup?

Working as a Software Engineer at a startup typically means you'll be part of a small, agile team where roles and responsibilities can shift quickly based on company needs. You'll often participate in daily stand-ups, collaborate closely with founders or product leads, and have the opportunity to contribute ideas beyond your core coding tasks. The pace is usually fast, and you'll likely wear multiple hats, working on everything from prototyping new features to troubleshooting production issues. This hands-on, collaborative atmosphere provides excellent opportunities for skill growth, creative problem-solving, and making a visible impact on the company's direction.

Job description

Position Summary... What you'll do...As a Staff Engineer on the Walmart Space Planning and Execution team, you will build the intelligent platforms that autonomously design and optimize physical space across our massive retail network. You will build the ML frameworks, model runtimes, and agentic workflows that govern macro space (floor plans), micro space (planograms/modulars), and featured spaces across our stores (Sales Floor, Backroom) and depots. Operating at the intersection of platform engineering and applied AI, your work will directly enable customer-centric initiatives focused on execution speed, hyper-localized assortments, and unprecedented revenue growth. We offer the agility of a startup paired with the unmatched scale of the enterprise, giving you the ultimate sandbox to revolutionize spatial intelligence and physical retail.
About Team:
On the Item and Inventory team, we ensure our customers get their orders when and where they want them, in a frictionless, predictable manner. What's more, we create reusable SaaS products and services that manage our catalog and power end-to-end inventory management, including replenishment, fulfillment, and transportation. With end-to-end inventory management, from replenishment and fulfillment to transportation, we give our drivers and partners the tools they need to get the right items to customers on time and in the right packaging.
What you'll do:
  • Architect Enterprise Platforms: Apply cloud-native architecture principles (microservices, containers, automation) to deliver scalable, resilient infrastructure, including feature stores, model runtimes, and CI/CD pipelines.
  • Build AI-Driven Systems: Build AI-driven applications and intelligent automation features using languages such as JavaScript, TypeScript, Python, Java, Rust, Dart, and C++. You will integrate AI agents and ML components that support multi-step reasoning for complex space planning workflows.
  • Own the Full Lifecycle: Drive the full software development lifecycle: coding, testing, CI/CD deployment, observability, monitoring, and maintenance. You will conduct system design reviews to validate feasibility, ensure quality, and confirm alignment with architectural best practices.
  • Serve as a Technical North Star: Mentor engineers and junior leaders across teams, fostering technical growth, psychological safety, and continuous learning. You will influence architectural and technical decisions, advocating for solutions that are secure, maintainable, modular, and scalable.
  • Drive Cross-Functional Execution: Manage cross-functional leadership and stakeholder alignment, translating ambiguous business challenges into actionable insights and determining rollout strategy.

What you'll bring:
  • Deep Technical Depth: You possess expert-level proficiency in modern programming languages (e.g., Python, Java, Rust, C++) and apply design patterns and principles to ensure robust solutions.
  • Platform & Infrastructure Pedigree: You lead infrastructure and tooling development to accelerate engineering productivity, enhance developer experience, and support platform goals.
  • AI/ML Integration Experience: You integrate AI agents and ML components that support multi-step reasoning and automation using platforms like GitHub Copilot.
  • Architectural Judgment: You excel at system design reviews to validate feasibility, ensuring cohesive execution and alignment with roadmap milestones.
  • A Builder’s Mentality: You take pride in your work, have a strong sense of ownership, and are excited about solving complex challenges and digging into data for insights.
  • Empathetic Leadership: You are comfortable influencing others, leading teams, managing stakeholders, getting buy-in from leadership, and communicating clearly.
