As of Jun 7, 2026, the average yearly pay for software engineer remote oil gas in the United States is $147,524.00, according to ZipRecruiter salary data. Most workers in this role earn between $120,000.00 and $173,000.00 per year, depending on experience, location, and employer.

What does a remote software engineer do in the oil and gas industry?

A remote software engineer in the oil and gas industry designs, develops, and maintains software systems that support exploration, drilling, production, and data analysis processes. They may work on specialized applications for equipment monitoring, process automation, data visualization, or safety compliance. Working remotely, they collaborate with multidisciplinary teams using digital tools, and often focus on solutions that enhance efficiency, safety, and decision-making across geographically dispersed operations.

What is the difference between Software Engineer Remote Oil Gas vs Software Developer Remote Oil Gas?

AspectSoftware Engineer Remote Oil GasSoftware Developer Remote Oil Gas
CredentialsBachelor's in CS or related field, sometimes certifications in software engineeringBachelor's in CS or related field, coding bootcamps often accepted
Work EnvironmentRemote, collaborative teams, often in engineering or technical departmentsRemote, focused on coding and application development
Industry UsageCommonly used in engineering firms, oil & gas companies, and tech providersUsed interchangeably in industry, often in software development teams within oil & gas

Both roles involve software development in the oil & gas industry, but Software Engineer Remote Oil Gas typically emphasizes system design, architecture, and engineering principles, while Software Developer Remote Oil Gas focuses more on coding and application implementation. The roles often overlap, but engineers may handle more complex system tasks.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a Software Engineer in a remote oil and gas role, and why are they important?

To excel as a remote Software Engineer in the oil and gas industry, you need strong programming skills (such as Python, C++, or Java), a solid understanding of software development methodologies, and preferably a degree in computer science or engineering. Experience with industry-specific tools like SCADA systems, cloud platforms (AWS, Azure), and certifications such as AWS Certified Solutions Architect or Microsoft Certified: Azure Developer Associate are highly valuable. Outstanding problem-solving, self-motivation, and effective remote communication skills help professionals collaborate across global teams and address complex technical challenges. These abilities ensure the delivery of secure, reliable software solutions that support critical operations in a highly regulated and data-intensive industry.

What unique challenges might a remote software engineer face while working in the oil and gas industry, and how can they overcome them?

Remote software engineers in the oil and gas sector often work with legacy systems, large datasets, and real-time monitoring applications, which can present integration and connectivity challenges—especially when collaborating with on-site teams at remote field locations. Effective communication, thorough documentation, and a proactive approach to understanding the domain-specific needs of field engineers and operations staff are essential for success. Leveraging collaboration tools, regularly syncing with cross-functional teams, and staying updated on industry regulations can help overcome these hurdles and contribute to high-impact solutions.

Job description

Hiring !!!
Greetings from Modern Agile Technologies Inc.

Position: FPGA Design & Validation Engineer (Oil & Gas Systems)
Location: Houston, TX (Onsite)
Type:     Contract

Exp: 5-12 Yrs

As an FPGA Engineer in our Oil & Gas division, you will develop high-reliability digital systems for demanding environments, such as downhole drilling tools, subsea instrumentation, or refinery monitoring systems. You will leverage VHDL to implement complex data acquisition and signal processing algorithms that must operate under strict power and thermal constraints. A significant portion of this role involves hands-on lab validation to ensure system integrity before deployment in remote or hazardous field locations.

Key Responsibilities:

Ruggedized Design: Implement synthesizable VHDL code optimized for low power consumption and high-temperature stability (e.g., surviving 150°C+ for downhole applications).
High-Reliability Validation: Lead hardware-in-the-loop (HIL) testing in the lab to simulate harsh field conditions. Utilize oscilloscopes, logic analyzers (ILA/SignalTap), and thermal chambers to verify timing and functional reliability.
Protocol Management: Develop and test custom and industry-standard communication bridges (e.g., Modbus, Ethernet/IP, CAN, or proprietary mud-pulse telemetry).
Data Integrity: Design robust memory interfaces (DDR3/4) and error correction (ECC) for large-scale data logging during seismic or pipe inspection missions.
Certification Support: Maintain detailed documentation of testing protocols and validation results to support safety and industry compliance standards.
Perform functional and timing verification using respective simulators
Conduct post-synthesis and post-layout verification.
Work Experience

Required Technical Skills

Language & Logic: Expert proficiency in VHDL; experience with high-reliability design techniques like triple modular redundancy (TMR) is a plus.
Tools: Expert-level use of Xilinx Vivado, Intel Quartus, Lattice FPGA or Microchip Libero.
Lab Expertise: Mastery of high-speed digital probing, power analysis (using tools like XPE), and debugging hardware-software interfaces.
Industry Interfaces: Experience with ADC/DAC interfacing (using JESD204B or LVDS) for high-precision instrumentation.
Environment: Understanding of design constraints for battery-operated or power-limited remote systems.

Qualifications

Education: B.E./M.Tech in Electrical, Electronics, or Instrumentation Engineering.
Experience: 3+ years in FPGA development, preferably with exposure to industrial automation, subsea electronics, or downhole tools.
Soft Skills: Strong analytical mindset for "root cause" debugging in complex, multi-disciplinary systems.Â
