What is a software engineer manager?

A Software Engineer Manager is a professional who leads a team of software engineers, overseeing the design, development, and deployment of software projects. They are responsible for managing team performance, setting goals, and ensuring that projects are completed on time and within budget. In addition to technical expertise, they also handle hiring, mentoring, and career development of team members. Software Engineer Managers often collaborate with other departments to align technical solutions with business objectives. Their role combines leadership, project management, and deep technical knowledge.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a software engineer manager?

To thrive as a Software Engineer Manager, you need a solid background in software development, team leadership experience, and often a degree in computer science or a related field. Familiarity with project management tools (like Jira), version control systems (such as Git), and cloud platforms (e.g., AWS, Azure) is typically required, along with relevant certifications. Exceptional communication, problem-solving, and mentoring abilities help you build effective teams and drive project success. These skills ensure you can lead technical initiatives, foster collaboration, and deliver high-quality software solutions in dynamic environments.

What are some common challenges faced by software engineer managers when transitioning from an individual contributor role?

Software Engineer Managers often find the shift from coding-focused work to leadership responsibilities challenging. Instead of primarily writing code, their days are filled with mentoring team members, managing project timelines, and facilitating communication between technical and non-technical stakeholders. Balancing technical oversight with people management, and learning to delegate effectively, are critical skills to develop. Additionally, they must stay current with technology trends while focusing on team growth and performance.

Job description

Who We're Looking For - Senior Software Engineer

We're looking for a Senior Software Engineer to join our team at Clearlink. In this role, you'll take technical ownership of high-traffic WordPress properties, helping maintain and evolve their applications, integrations, and architecture. You'll design, develop, and optimize enterprise-scale WordPress applications - custom themes, plugins, APIs, and performance improvements - writing secure, testable, maintainable code using PHP and WordPress alongside modern technologies like TypeScript, React, Node.js, and Go. You'll keep consumer-facing websites performant, reliable, and secure, optimize Postgres and MySQL databases, build custom APIs and integrations, and apply solid DevOps practices to ship efficiently. Beyond the code, you'll provide day-to-day engineering leadership across your assigned properties - prioritizing technical improvements, leading design reviews, and reviewing peers' work - while staying hands-on and helping build a team culture grounded in open communication and honest feedback.

The Impact You Will Make
  • Develop high-quality software that aligns with both user needs and business goals.
  • Take technical ownership of high-profile, high-traffic WordPress properties, helping manage, maintain, and evolve their applications, integrations, architecture, and supporting services.
  • Design, develop, maintain, and optimize enterprise-scale WordPress applications, including custom themes, plugins, integrations, APIs, and performance improvements.
  • Write secure, testable, maintainable, and extensible code using industry best practices.
  • Collaborate with product managers, UX designers, and cross-functional teams to build and deliver customer-centric technical solutions.
  • Leverage strong expertise in WordPress and PHP, along with modern web technologies such as TypeScript, React, Node.js, Go, and related frameworks, to build performant and responsive web experiences.
  • Ensure the performance, reliability, scalability, and security of high-profile, high-traffic consumer websites, proactively identifying opportunities for optimization and platform improvement.
  • Design and optimize Postgres & MySQL databases and implement effective database strategies.
  • Use modern JavaScript and TypeScript, particularly React, to build dynamic and performant front-end experiences.
  • Apply strong knowledge of DevOps workflows to support efficient development, deployment, and ongoing operation of applications.
  • Work on web applications with service-oriented and high-availability architectures.
  • Leverage AI-assisted development tools and modern engineering practices to improve developer productivity, code quality, testing, troubleshooting, and delivery speed.
  • Design and build custom APIs and integrations to support rapid product development and connectivity between WordPress and internal or third-party platforms.
  • Use GitHub or similar version control systems to manage and review code.
  • Collaborate closely with team members to foster a culture of open communication, technical excellence, and continuous feedback.
  • Lead or participate in technical design reviews to evaluate and select scalable, maintainable solutions.
  • Review code from other developers, offering constructive feedback to uphold code quality and engineering best practices.
  • Provide technical direction and day-to-day engineering leadership across assigned WordPress properties, including prioritizing technical improvements, improving platform health, and supporting reliable delivery.
  • Participate in the hiring process and mentor junior and mid-level engineers to support skill development and knowledge sharing.
What You Bringย
  • Five (5) years of experience with object-oriented programming and one or more programming languages and frameworks, such as PHP, Java, Node.js, Golang, or JavaScript.
  • Strong hands-on experience developing, maintaining, and supporting WordPress-based applications, including custom themes, plugins, APIs, and third-party integrations.
  • Experience managing and optimizing high-traffic WordPress websites, including performance, caching, security, scalability, and production troubleshooting.
  • Strong understanding of software engineering fundamentals, including data structures, algorithms, design patterns, and application architecture.
  • Three (3) years of experience with modern JavaScript frameworks, with strong React experience preferred.
  • Three (3) years of experience testing, maintaining, and launching software products.
  • Experience developing and supporting CMS-driven applications and integrations.
  • Experience with infrastructure as code using Terraform, CDK, CloudFormation, or similar technologies.
  • Experience performing root cause analysis across applications, infrastructure, data, and processes to identify issues and opportunities for improvement.
  • Experience with cloud technologies such as AWS, Azure, or GCP and tools such as Docker, Kubernetes, Bitbucket, Git, or Postman.
  • Strong understanding of application and data security.
  • Experience working with relational and NoSQL databases, including MySQL, PostgreSQL, and similar technologies.
  • Ability to understand and work within existing codebases and open-source technologies, identify areas for improvement, and optimize them over time.
  • Ability to provide technical leadership and platform ownership while remaining highly hands-on with development and contributing across multiple products and engineering initiatives.
