Senior Software Engineer – Java | Markets Business | Calypso

Project Description

We are a top-tier Calypso Partner and a market leader in implementation, integration, upgrade, and migration.

We provide end-to-end project services and have delivered Calypso projects across all major asset classes and sectors including investment banking, asset management, corporate treasury, and insurance.

Compensation for NYC: 120000-200000 USD Gross per year based on your interview results.


Responsibilities

We are seeking an experienced Senior Software Engineer to lead the design, development, and modernization of mission-critical backend systems within our Markets Business line. In this role, you will operate as a senior technical leader and high-impact individual contributor, taking full ownership of complex integrations, business operations workflows, and system modernization initiatives across multiple domains including Auctions, Trading, Operations Planning, and Rates Production products.

This position is ideal for a senior engineer who thrives on solving complex technical challenges in a fast-paced environment, building new features collaboratively across multiple products, while also strategically modernizing existing systems to meet modern engineering standards. You will work cross-functionally with different squads, championing technical excellence and driving architectural decisions that impact the entire Markets business line.


What You Will Do

Architecture & Development Leadership

  • Design, architect, and deliver robust, production-grade backend services, APIs, and mid-tier integrations using Java and the Spring ecosystem.
  • Take full technical ownership of business-critical services from architectural design through production deployment.
  • Turn complex business requirements into scalable technical designs, making critical engineering trade-offs independently.
  • Champion architectural patterns and best practices across multiple squads and products.

Modernization & Technical Excellence

  • Evaluate and strategically re-engineer internal code bases to modern standards and cloud-ready architectures.
  • Identify technical debt and lead refactoring initiatives without causing production downtime.
  • Maintain code excellence through rigorous testing strategies, deep code reviews, and continuous improvement.
  • Build systems for failover, disaster recovery, and maximum operational stability under heavy data loads.

Cross-Product Integration & Collaboration

  • Build new features collaboratively across multiple products and domains within Markets Business.
  • Design and implement secure, scalable integration layers connecting core platforms with third-party vendor systems and enterprise platforms.
  • Deliver APIs, mid-tier integration, and backend functionality for trading, operations, and auction workflows.
  • Work effectively with different squads, contributing across multiple development stacks and technologies.

Performance & Scale

  • Optimize application performance, ensure high availability, and manage data consistency across distributed architectures.
  • Build event-driven, low-latency systems capable of handling high-throughput transactional workloads.
  • Design for scale, resilience, and operational excellence in production environments.


Mandatory Skills Description

Education & Experience

  • BS in Computer Science, MIS, or similar technical field.
  • 5+ years of production software engineering experience with demonstrable success across multiple products simultaneously.

Advanced Java & Spring Expertise

  • Deep understanding of core Java (8-21), JVM internals, memory management, concurrency, and performance tuning.
  • Extensive production experience with Spring ecosystem: Spring Boot, Spring Data, Spring MVC, Spring Security, Spring Core.

Integration & System Design

  • Proven ability to design and implement interfaces and integrations incorporating established best practices.
  • Strong experience designing integration layers, handling complex data translations, and API design (RESTful).
  • Experience building decision support applications for operations and trading in the financial industry.

Distributed Systems & Messaging

  • Proven track record building scalable microservices and event-driven architectures.
  • Production experience with Kafka/Amazon MSK for streaming and messaging patterns.

Data & Infrastructure

  • Strong experience with RDBMS (Oracle, PostgreSQL) including schema design, query optimization.
  • Experience with middle-tier caching solutions (Redis, Elasticache).
  • Production experience with App/Web servers (Tomcat, JBoss, etc.).

Modern Engineering Practices

  • Knowledge and use of Agile methodologies (e.g., Scrum).
  • Test-Driven Development AND Behavior Driven Development (TDD/BDD).
  • Experience using Continuous Integration and Deployment tools (GitLab/GitHub, pipeline maintenance).

Leadership & Autonomy

  • Demonstrated ability to take vague product requirements and independently design and deliver complete, secure technical solutions.
  • Strong analytical and communication skills with ability to influence technical direction.
  • Willingness to contribute and lead across multiple development stacks, areas, and technologies.

Transformation & Modernization

  • Proven track record of successfully refactoring and modernizing large-scale legacy code bases.
  • Building and testing systems end-to-end with focus on zero-downtime deployments.

Cloud & DevOps

  • Hands-on experience with AWS services: IAM, S3, CloudFront, Secrets Manager, EC2, ECS, ALB, RDS, Elasticache, MSK, AmazonMQ.
  • Containerization & Orchestration: Docker, Kubernetes, ECS.
  • Infrastructure as Code: Terraform.
  • CI/CD pipeline design and maintenance.

Additional Technologies

  • Testing frameworks: Playwright or similar E2E testing tools.
  • High-throughput transactional systems in financial services.
  • Query optimization and database performance tuning.
